What Is U3A? The U3A is not a University – at least, not in any conventional sense. It comprises a group of people pursuing shared interests under the guidance of a volunteer tutor/class leader. The U3A derives its strength from its members’ capabilities and from their shared knowledge and experience. There is little distinction between tutor and student and both work together to make the class a success. Indeed, a tutor in one class will often be a student in another.

Who Can Join? You need to be over 50 years of age and retired or semi-retired. No qualifications or prerequisites are needed (except for advanced classes which require prior learning).

Tutors/Class Leaders Our Tutors/Class Leaders come from many areas. Some have academic qualifications in their field; some have business expertise and some have skills in recreational or general-interest fields. We are always looking for new Tutors/Class Leaders and this may be a role that you could fill.

Membership Fees Because Tutors/Class Leaders and administrative assistants are all voluntary, U3A charges an annual fee of $40 which entitles members to attend as many classes as they choose throughout the calendar year providing that there are vacancies in that class. NB: Membership does not guarantee entry to a particular class, and the membership fee is not refundable.

Classes Classes usually run for 1 – 2 hours during the day and are usually conveniently located near public transport. Class numbers average about twelve and the subject material and content are tailored to individual needs. There are currently over 1,500 members.

Benefits How can we benefit from studying something new? Elizabeth Barrett Browning would have said ‘let me count the ways…’There is the obvious benefit of finding new interests and becoming absorbed in new and fascinating fields, learning exciting subjects, extending our abilities, and adding a new dimension in our lives. Then there is the benefit of making new friends, with all that implies. You may even find a lot to laugh about. U3A classes are fun. And, of course, medical studies have shown that active minds and bodies remain healthy. The longer our minds and bodies work the longer they will be able to do so.

Other Benefits The U3A organises bus trips and social functions which are advertised through our newsletter and webpage ( listed on the inside front cover). Is It Expensive? Because tutors/class leaders work in a voluntary capacity, U3A has probably the lowest membership charge of any educational organization in Australia. A small annual fee entitles members to attend as many classes as they choose throughout the calendar year. Some classes may require the purchase of materials or perhaps, books and photocopying; however, we aim to keep those costs as low as possible.

You may join at any time of the year, simply by completing the application form and mailing it together with the annual membership fee to our postal address or with a personal payment at our Office: Penrith School of Arts, 3 Castlereagh Street, Penrith, weekdays between the hours of 9.00 am – 3.00 pm.

Our Office is NOT open during school holiday periods and public holidays.

Absence from Class We understand that our Members have holidays, grandparent duty and other commitments, however if you are absent from your enrolled class for more than four (4) continuous weeks without advising your Tutor/Class Leader before your planned absence, you may be removed from the class.

EnrolmentWe ask that every member present their Membership Card to their Tutor/Class Leader on enrolment. For those members who enrol with the Tutor/Class Leader via phone or email you need to present your card on the first day of class. No exceptions.

NB: Membership does not guarantee entry to a particular class, and the membership fee is not refundable. Contact the tutor/class leader for any class you wish to attend, in order to check if there is a vacancy, the starting date and any book(s) or material required.

The paper is shaped by hand-tearing and then glued to a paper or card base. A large variety of subjects are used (landscapes, flowers and animals are popular). This art is found to be challenging, exciting and artistically satisfying. Aspects of Japanese culture and art are often mentioned in class. The whole concept of this art can be summed up in the Japanese phrase “Wabi-Sabi” (… the art of simple elegance). Join this class and enjoy something different!!!

Proper ballroom dance shoes are necessary for this course.Therese will address this matter at the beginning of the course and advise where to purchase appropriate shoes at the best price. Until you have the correct shoes, firm-fitting shoes are required; leather soles are better than rubber if possible. No thongs, scuffs or slip-on styles are to be worn. Ladies, fine stiletto heels are equally inappropriate. Correct shoes must be worn by Week 4 to continue in the class.Therese is qualified with the Australian National Dance Association, has done medals, competition as an amateur and currently dances Pro/Am Competitions and as she says: “WALK IN and DANCE OUT at Penrith Ballroom Dance”.
