    Fall energy

All equimet at height has a otetial fall eergy, which is

deedet uo the equimets weight ad the height from which

    it may fall.

Fall eergy (Ef) is measured i joules, ad calculated usig the

formula Ef=mgh, where m = the weight of the obect i kg, h = the

height from which the obect is droed, ad g = the gravitatioal

    acceleratio (9.81m/s2).

The figure to the left is based o this formula, ad ca be used to

calculate fall eergy to estimate the severity of ossible iuries.

The otetial for iury deeds uo a umber of factors, iclud-

ig the equimets fall eergy, hardess ad shae, where it hits

    the body, etc.

A fall eergy over 40 joules (red area) may result i serious iury

    or death.

A fall eergy betwee 20 ad 40 joules (yellow area) may result i

    the eed for medical treatmet.

A fall eergy betwee 0 ad 20 joules (gree area) may result i

the eed for first aid, or o iury.

The iury otetial must be classified i accordace with these

values, ad if ecessary adusted with regard to the tye of droed

obect. Shar obects with low kietic eergy ca have a higher i-

ury otetial tha a blut/soft obect with a higher kietic eergy. The limits described above are the orms used i the norwe-

gia etroleum idustry. SfS is aware that other forums, such as

DROpS, oerate with other limit values.

    Fall factor

The fall factor is the legth of the fall divided by the legth of the

securig device that absorbs the fall eergy. The force to which a

erso or obect is exosed deeds o the eergy-absorbig ro-

erties of the securig device (ability to legthe without break-

ig). Eergy absorbers are therefore imortat, eve o securig

    devices for tools.

Whe securig ersos agaist fallig, the fall factor must ref-

erably be ket below factor 1, ad shall uder o circumstaces

    exceed factor 2.
