4A Message from the Programme Director

On behalf of the teaching faculty and administrative staff involved

with the MPhil Management programme, I also wish you a very warmwelcome to Cambridge Judge Business School. We haveendeavoured to put together a unique cohort of incredibly bright andhighly motivated students within the flagship MPhil Managementprogramme, and we are delighted that you are part of it. We are allimmensely looking forward to working with you, and to accompanyingyou on your academic and professional journey during the course ofthis new academic year. With all best wishes,

Dr Allgre L HadidaMPhil Management Director

    Programme Overview

The MPhil Management (MPM) is a taught Masters programmewhich offers new and recent graduates of any subject (except thosewith a single honours or major degree in business or management orrelevant related subjects) a thorough grounding in management. It is

conceived of as a graduate conversion course which will preparestudents for a professional career in management. It sets highacademic and intellectual standards and is based upon the latestacademic research in the field. The normal expectation is thatgraduates of the MPM will seek a professional career inmanagement.

The philosophy behind the programme is that whilst effectivemanagement requires experience, a good grounding in academicknowledge is an invaluable prerequisite for a managerial career.Because management involves such a wide array of skills, from themathematical to the interpersonal, the MPM demands excellenceacross a wide range of applied disciplines. Cambridge is a university

with more than 800 years of outstanding academic achievement andCambridge Judge Business School (CJBS), whilst a relatively newpart of the university and a relatively new business school, is proud todraw upon and embody that tradition of excellence. We do expectthat after graduating from our programme, you will have both theknowledge and the wisdom to become an outstanding manager andleader in the future.

As a student in the MPhil in Management, you will take 11 modules,of which 9 are core (compulsory) modules. The remaining 2 moduleswill be chosen from the list of elective (optional) modules. Eachmodule counts for the same number of credits. In most cases,

  • 8/13/2019 Handbook Mphil Mgt 2013-14

    7/29

5elective subjects are in highly specialised topics. Each moduleconsists of 16 hours of teaching. In Michaelmas and Lent terms, modules are delivered over 8 weeks, however in Easter term they aretaught intensively over 6 weeks or less. In some courses there maybe a small number of extra classes and/or tutorials also required ofyou. It is vital to notethat the time outside class is most emphaticallynot free time. To successfully complete the programme, most of

your time outside classes needs to be devoted to preparation, reading, work on assessed and non-assessed assignments andrevision. We have a very high expectation that you will come toclasses having immersed yourself in recommended reading, and theprogramme will not carry passengers in this respect. We also expectyou to be able to discuss and answer questions in the teachingsessions, when called upon to do so. You should expect to work anaverage of 50 hours a week during term-time and you will also needto work and keep up to date with readings in vacations.

You should also recognise that almost all participants onmanagement courses find that they learn as much, or even more, from their interactions with fellow students, and those on otherprogrammes at CJBS, and, through their Colleges, with students in

other subjects as they do from their classes. Thus you should spendtime interacting with other students as part of your learning. Theadmission standards on the MPM are extremely high probablyhigher than any comparable programme in the world - and so youcan learn something from everyone on the programme. This is theninth year in which the programme has run. Graduates from previousyears have gained employment with a wide range of employersincluding blue chip consultancies and investment banks. However, our aim is to facilitate a wide range of career options. The Universitycareers service supports MPM students in career decisions and jobseeking.

    10Elective (Optional) Modules

Students must take two modules from the following list of electives, with no more than two in any one term. See Section IV (below) forfurther information on choosing electives.

    Term 1: Michaelmas

Module Code Module Title Module Leader

    MM10 Globalisation at theCrossroads

    Dr Jin Zhang

    MM20* Environment andSustainability

    Dr Chris Hope

MM31*** Supply Chain Management Dr Benn Lawson

    MF3**** Financial Reporting andCapital Markets

    Prof Geoff Meeks

    TPE10 Managing the InnovationProcess

    Prof SteliosKavadias

***MM31 has a maximum class size of 25

****MF3 has a maximum quota of 10 students from the MPhilManagement.

Students on the MPM must select two elective modules from the listabove. Where indicated modules have a maximum size in whichcase admission will be on a f irst come, first served basis. Whilstthere are no pre-requisites for any of the electives in Term 1, thosemarked (Q)in the list require strong quantitative skills. You shouldmake a sensible appraisal of your own abilities before selecting thesemodules; if in doubt please discuss with the module leader.

The electives taken may be spread across the terms in various waysin order to allow students to design a programme of interest to them. If, by virtue of choosing a combination of electives students create aparticularly heavy workload in any one term then that is their ownresponsibility and will not be taken into consideration by theexaminers. Such students will, of course, by definition have acorrespondingly lighter workload in another term.

The electives typically involve highly specialised material and MPMstudents will often be taught alongside students on otherprogrammes. You may initially feel disadvantaged when takingmodules from other programmes because your fellow-students may

  • 8/13/2019 Handbook Mphil Mgt 2013-14

    13/29

11appear to have specialist knowledge that you lack but the optionsavailable to you have been carefully designed to be suitable for allthose who can take them and you should quickly find that you canmanage them. Indeed, MPM students have in the past oftenoutperformed students from the parent programmes of modules.

Please note that you will not be able to change your elective choice

once it is made (for final deadlines see calendar).

    Examinations Requirements

To pass the MPhil Management it is necessary to achieve 60%overall, irrespective of the mark in any one module. These marks areachieved through the assessment method on the modules taken (e.g.test, coursework etc.). Each of the 11 modules counts for 100 marks. Therefore it is necessary to achieve a minimum of 660 marks acrossthe programme in order to pass. Candidates are awarded a pass orfail on this basis. The University awards a Distinction to thosestudents who achieve a 75% or above mark overall.

You should note that an important part of the Cambridge system isthat the Board of Examiners are completely independent of theProgramme Director. The Board includes an External Examiner whowill be a senior academic independent of Cambridge University. TheBoard has wide-ranging powers, including the power to call a studentfor an oral examination on any or all assessed work. If you are likelyto be called for such an examination you will be advised in advanceof the Examiners meeting.

The core modules will be assessed eitherby an unseen writtenexam (i.e. an exam in which the questions are not known in advance)which will normally last for 2 hours orby 4000 word term paper(s),which may be a single essay or a series of individual or group

assignments. Each core module leader will explain the assessmentprocedures for their module. In addition to assessed work, studentson core courses may be asked to prepare non-assessed work onwhich they will receive feedback, with the purpose of monitoringprogress and assisting in preparation for assessment.

The elective modules will be assessed in a variety of ways includingexams, essays, presentations, exercises or some combination ofthese reflecting the particular content and skills being taught. Eachelective module leader will explain the assessment procedures fortheir elective.

In all cases, the amount of work required for assessment will bebroadly comparable between modules. There is therefore no sense inwhich one module is easier than another, except to the extent that, inevitably, individual students may by virtue of their abilities and priortraining, find some modules more straightforward than others.

When taking electives, you should not worry that some of your fellowstudents are being assessed under different marking criteria thanyou: all MPM students on all modules they can take are assessedagainst a pass mark of 60.

    Feedback of marks and examinations

Marks will be given as a percentage. All marks are provisional untilconfirmed by the Board of Examiners. Marks can be raised orlowered by the Board of Examiners. In particular, if the average markfor a module is exceptionally high or low, marks may be moderated toensure that students taking particular module combinations are notdisadvantaged. We try our best at the department to give earlyfeedback on marks, but please be aware that the timing of therelease of provisional marks may vary greatly from one module toanother, as the University general policy is to release all marks at the

end of the academic year. The nature and extent of feedback given will vary from lecturer tolecturer, but students may reasonably expect to receive someindication of the strengths and weaknesses of any work submitted.University of Cambridge regulations do not allow students to viewtheir examination scripts, nor are students able to request remarkinguntil after the release of confirmed marks in June 2014. The MPhilManagement programme will however make an exception forstudents who have received marks below 60 on their examination. These students should make an email request to Ms Sofia La Cortewithin two weeks of the release of provisional marks, and will then benotified a time when you will be able to view the examination script. This will be for information purposes only, and the lecturer will not bepresent.

Should other queries regarding examinations arise, they should in thefirst instance be directed in writing (via email) to the module lecturer, and you will receive a written response within two weeks. If you arestill unhappy with the issue, you can then write to Ms Sofia La Corte, who will pass on your request to the Chair of Examiners of the MPhilManagement for consideration. The Chair of Examiners can raise itat the final Examination Board at the end of June. Lecturers are notobliged to discuss individual cases in person.

    15Plagiarism

The University of Cambridge and Cambridge Judge Business Schooltake the issue of plagiarism very seriously. Plagiarism is specificallyidentified in the University's Discipline Regulations as constitutingunfair means, and, where it is suspected, formal investigations willbe carried out that could ultimately lead to suspension from the

University or failure of the degree for which the student has beenentered.

The University of Cambridge defines plagiarism as "submitting asone's own work, irrespective of intent to deceive, which derives inpart or in its entirety from the work of others without dueacknowledgement". Plagiarism can occur in respect to all types ofsources and media. It is both poor scholarship and a breach ofacademic integrity.

Examples of plagiarisminclude copying(using another personslanguage and/or ideas as if they are a candidates own) andcollusionwith another person, including another candidate, other

than as permitted for joint project work (i.e. where collaboration isconcealed or has been forbidden).

Students should familiarise themselves with University's policy ongood academic practice and plagiarism, as set out atwww.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/plagiarism.All students submittingwork for examination will be required to sign a declaration to confirmthat they understand the University's definition of plagiarism and thatthey undertake not to plagiarise.

Cambridge Judge Business School may use originality-checkingsoftware in the detection of plagiarism and all students submittingwork for examination will be required to give their consent for theirwork to be scanned into the software. Where plagiarism is suspected,

whether as a result of the use of originality-checking software orduring marking of submitted work, Cambridge Judge BusinessSchool will carry out an initial investigation to assess the seriousnessof the case and whether to refer it to the University authorities.

In addition, each candidate who submits a project report, essay, dissertation or any other work for examination will be required to signa declaration that: the submission is his or her own unaided work, except as may be specified in the declaration; all sources are fullyacknowledged and referenced, the submission does not containmaterial that has already been used to any substantial extent for acomparable purpose. If two or more candidates submit work incollaboration, they will each be required to sign the declaration andwill be held jointly responsible for adhering to it.

We treat the issue of plagiarism very seriously. We requireintegrity and responsibility in fulfilment of all courserequirements.
