    Handicraft Industry has been globally considered, asthe rich heritage of India.

    This is why Indian Handicraft is in huge demand allover the world due to its unique appeal and

    craftsmanship. Indian Handicrafts are available in brass,metal, wood, stone, beads, such as Paintings,Notebooks & Albums, Marble Inlay Work, Furnishing,Sculpture, Artificial Jewelry and other handicraftproducts.

    The wooden handicrafts industry plays an important role in theIndian economy. This industryrequires low capital investment andother resources. The wooden handicraft sector provides a high ratioof value addition, and has emerged as one of the major sources offoreign exchange earnings for India.Carpet weaving industry is the largest export oriented craft

    industryfrom India. Not onlythere is a great demand for costlysilkcarpets from Kashmir, which has become the status symbol intraditional Indian homes, but there is also demand for woolen andnon-woolen carpets.The demand for decorative items such as traditional wallhangings, silver cutlery, brass pots, embellished wooden

    sculptures, marble and wood inlaywork, silk carpets,wrought ironfurniture and decorative pieces, traditional paintings, enameledfurniture, stone and wood carvings, metal, wood and stonesculptures etc. is also on the rise in India and abroad.

    Handicrafts have great potential, as theyhold the key

    for sustaining not onlythe existing set of millions ofartisans spread over length and breadth of the country,but also for the increasinglylarge number of newentrants in the crafts activity.

    y The Handicraft sector has, however, suffered due to itsbeing unorganized, with the additional constraints of

    lack of education, low capital, and poor exposure tonew technologies, absence of market intelligence, anda poor institutional framework.

    In spite of these constraints, sector has witnessed a significantgrowth of 3 % annually. Some of the promising areas in the crafts

    sector during the Xth Five Year Plan had been:
