observation and creation

MANIFESTOThe manifesto was a project where we had to engage with oth-ers and discussing our own individual practical area of work. With each person contributing to showcase and range of work pro-duced by the group as a whole.

Given the task to form a group of people that share the same interests, as each other to make are own manifesto. To form the groups we were each given an A3 piece of paper and a pen to write out our interests. After having 5 or more interests we posted the sheets on the wall to allow everyone to see if there are any familiar interests.

Face book screen shots

Showing some of the few messag-es that were sent to communicate as group when not together. This was a huge help because none of us live together and we found this a big help on getting out manifesto done.

MANIFESTO (the group)

After doing this exercise we then formed groups with people we thought suited to what we want to create. My first group was with Sarah Berry and Yurina Okamoto where we repeated the last task and as a group we wrote down the five areas we would like to focus our manifesto.

1.TYPE2.ILLUSTRAITON3.INFORMATION GRAPHICS4.PHOTOGRAPHY5.FILM

Showing the areas of interest to others we then became a group of six with Dan Hawes, Richard de Cazalet and Aneesha.

MANIFESTO (information cards)

My part into the manifesto was to design small information graphic cards, explaining what each area of subject we have chosen with a small detailed text and images relating to the card. Each card is separated by an individual color and is in an easy layout to read, with a front cover with each area in order of how they are presented in the small exhibition.

The choice of the design was to make it clear and easy to under-stand, but given it a creative edge to grab the interests to other students

My own sort of branding on the manifesto group I was in, organ-izing the 5 areas we choose as a group in a set of colors. All togeth-er I designed 5 cards and a front pages or folder to hold the cards. Using the colors to represent each area and allow the user to easily separate the cards.

MANIFESTO (group manifesto)

Our manifesto is based on observation and creation. We visually communicate ideas and inspirations we have gathered from ob-serving all aspects of our world, both urban and natural. Our brief is to each create a visual piece of work which incorporates one or many of our chosen processes. We must show what we are about, and what we do in any of these formats. All this work will be put together

Page 6: HANDIN TERM 3

MANIFESTO (group work)

We started of by brainstorming a way of showing each area in our groups manifesto, the first attempt was forming a animation of 6 drawings that each person in our group drew with a final moving image to show the class. With a task to come up with a manifes-to and to show a small exhibition of our work, we decided to use the lockers in the university to show off our work with each of us having a locker to represent the mind and how we see things.

Images from the small exhibition we put on as a group in the university. Showing the examples of how people interacted with it.

Aphorism

APHORISM (first take)

The task was to produce a 30 second motion graphics that can communicate your groups chosen aphorism, the reason for this project was to addresses the concept of message and provides an opportunity to explore modes of communication.

I began by forming a group with Moe Hezwani, Luke peney, Justin Devon Moore and Jake Young and besides talking face to face the other source of contact was facebook. Creating a group that al-lowed the 5 of us to easily discuss ideas and what chosen Apho-rism we will pick.

A photo showing the 1st trail of the idea of a pen hitting the floor and silence is brought on after heavy music is playing. We felt that we could not capture the pen drop to make it work as a video, we shot on a camera from so many positions to if we could edit but we had no luck when taking the pictures. so we had to develop another idea for our chosen aphorism.

Page 8: HANDIN TERM 3

Aphorism

APHORISM (final video)

After having issues about what Aphorism the group used, we de-cided to come up with a verity of videos. So Moe and me decided to make our own film with the chosen Aphorism being

“ SILENCE IS GOLDEN”.

The first idea we had was using desk being the drop-back for the video and capturing the pen slowly falling of the table on to the floor, with the music being loud until it hits the floor. Bringing a silence so that it can relate to the Aphorism the idea was not fully happening with trouble trying to get the shots of the pen falling being very tricky. So we worked on a new idea with taking the same story but presenting it in a different way. Mainly focusing on person facial reactions to heavy rock music, using a camera to take the pictures of the different stages from silence to loud music making the girl react out of character until the music stops and the scene goes back silence. This is shown in the girls face and body and communicates the message of our chosen Aphorism.

Screen shots of the video we shot with a canon camera we had about 200 photos to edit for this video, below is the link for the video.

Charity

CHARITYThe task was set early in the year where we had to communicate a word, chosen at random from a hat through putting a video together and showing it to the rest of the group.

Charity being our chosen word we decided to look into different ways of communicating the word. Thinking that money should be the main focus we started to work around the idea of a homeless man begging for money. Our first try we showed me playing the homeless man and the others Koorosh Noroozi, Nick Mitchell, Ricky Byfield and Luke Peney being predestines walking past me, then one by one they would give me money. Before starting there was a timetable of the day showing a slot of filming the work then another slot showing the work to others and getting feedback to help us com-municate the message easily.

Using final cut and aftereffects to edit the final piece to a level we were happy with we presented it to the class, with a great response and being voted with the clearest messaged. The work was a success and the working in a group was a great experience.

Using the back of the car park at univer-sity as a drop back for out charity video. Screens shots and link below.

The Girls

THE GIRLS (Boy-band)

Being set a group task by “The Girls” a group of artists that came in and handed us a project that shows what we are through presenting it in a photo. Again working alongside Ricky Byfield, Koorosh Noroozi, Nick Mitchell and Luke peney we thought why not look into boy bands and parody boy band.

With have a short 5 min tutorial with the girls, the first thing they said was “ oh its the boy band”. Taking that as a sign that as a team our presence was giving off that boy-band look so we went forward with the idea. We began researching boys bands and how they were seen in the early days of there careers and how they promote them self.

Boy-bands such as Take That, Boyzone, and Westlife were hugely referenced to get the right look that was needed.

Boy bands and the look they started out with to get noticed and re-membered. Here our some of the images we research to get an inspired look for the group.

The Wanted, Boyzone, Backstreet boys and the Lonely Island

Page 11: HANDIN TERM 3

The Girls

THE GIRLS (The UNwanted)

Calling us the unwanted to associate with the whole parody boy band and taking everything that’s original but twisting it and making completely opposite to what a boy band should be.

Here’s a set of image before editing them before the final look. They all been set in the theme of being together and united, they also have been given a characterize personality as most past boy-bands do...example one being the cool guy and another being the bad boy of the group.

Workshops

WORKSHOPS (Making do)

Besides working on different projects each week, we took part in a few workshops that experimented with different medium, techniques and styles. Each one making me think differently in a way that i would not nor-mally do, the ones that stood out to me were making do, household and badge making.

Making do was a publication workshop where each grouped work on there own book out of an already made booklet, which would be directed at a certain group of people. Forming a group of 6 we worked on a publica-tion that was directed at children, meaning creating a playful and exciting book.

Splitting the book that was given to us into 6 we each worked on our own design, following the direction of a fun book for kids. i started off by thinking how i could make it interactive for kids and challenge them in a fun unique way. I thought opening up a page with a game or 0 and X, then crossing over to a dot to dot of the elephant that was originally on that page.

The finished publications ended with a mixture of particle games and color me in pages off fun. After presenting it the feedback was mix with ups and downs on the theme mainly. With too much information from the original document being used this was said to be a negative and not at-tract the children to come interact with it.

Final look at some of the other posters for the brand and what we pre-sented to the girls. 2 of the posters have been edited black and white and the unwanted logo in the corner to tell people who they our.

Workshop

WORKSHOPS (HouseHold)

Being set a task by the House-Hold group to get someone to build some-thing. Giving this a long think as a group we wanted to do something that did not only involve graphics. So we kept on brainstorming and looking at different ideas of creating a demo to make someone make something.

Looking into origami and maybe getting someone to make an animal or figure, we came across clothes where you followed a net to make dresses, shirts and trousers. We pitched this idea in out tutorial and got some great feedbacks on not make the idea restricted but allowing opening it and allow the person be more creative.

Workshop

WORKSHOPS (HouseHold)

The next step would be taking a selected few of the origami nets and breaking them down into tiny pieces of shapes. Allowing the user to be more creative and also making it more personal to them. Here are a few examples…

Two approached that were very similar with both users combining all the shapes or a majority of them and make a new dress with there own personal touch to it. Bother users of the kit are Tom Hagerty and Rosy Bailey.

Page 16: HANDIN TERM 3

Workshop

WORKSHOPS (pawson & o’neil) A collective of other projects that i normally do not work around was one being to design a badge and forming objects to create a letter. The badge workshop was arranged by Mark Pawson where we designed badge on a theme based on whatever we wanted it to be. I decided to use maps as a theme for my badges, each map that i choose was a location that meant something to me. This project became personal with the touch of putting maps that represented bits of my life.

A workshop brief set by Martin O’Neil to design a letter out of ordinary objects. Making a letter out of rubbish we found was very bizarre for me, instead for designing a font we had to create a letter from scratch. For my letter I wanted it to look interesting with different shapes, textures and color molded into one, this project opened my eyes to be creative without the help of a computer.

Results of my badge-making workshop with the outcome on the left below a map, which inspired me to this. Taking the map and just drawing out the lines instead of using Photoshop to fit in a circle.

Origins

OriginsA task to investigate your chosen area, mine being information graphics I decided to look how far the area goes back. From images to isotypes I learnt a few new things that I didn’t know before. The early stages of information I could find would be cave drawings, so I did a small designs relating to the drawings.

Examples of the range of in-formation that can be found in graphics

Live brief

HENDERSONS (the brief) Being set a task by the House-Hold group to get someone to build some-thing.

Live brief

HENDERSONS (starting point)

Pitching our idea to Sophie in out first group meeting with others pairs and getting critical feed back from not only tutors but also from out com-petition. I felt this was a good way of having a meeting because if allowed us to see how the other team thinks and getting honest feedback from your fellow students to improve our teamwork.

Sadly our idea of a box package was too fage for a direct mail, so we went back to developing the idea of packaging the direct piece. Keeping the pitch simple we decided to use a new way of reading information.

Most the final designs that will be on one side of the post cards. Each keeping with that Henderson looks.

HENDERSONS (development)

Looking at today’s advertisement you get bored or your attention drags off and you stop reading because of too much information. Taking images of the sun, tree, flower pot and a single cloud with a raindrop. So taking the quotes and forming it in the shape of the image, turning the pictori-als into post card as a solid direct mail for students package in a paper shaped envelop.

Examples of the advertisements I worked on for the show. Being based around the election and a new party group the only thing I wanted to do was to make everything clear and easy to understand.Screens shots of a quick mock up for the packaging, going to book binding workshops moe thought it would be best to use this a package for the cards. Inside will be 5 sleeves to hold the cards in place 4 being the pictorial post cards and 1 being a sign up card to join Henderson’s graduate program.

Page 21: HANDIN TERM 3

Live brief

HENDERSONS (development)

While I was designing the information side of the postcard, Moe my group partner was designing the other side. She did all the illustrations you see below and on all the final cards. She began with drawing out rough cop-ies then converting it to a digital file makes editing a lot easier for us. We found we had to change the text a lot to make it readable and a strain on the eyes. After having the finishing design we scanned and edit down to fit the A5 card, during this prosess

During this process we communicated each other to see if I could read and understand it, if there was an error I would tell Moe to change this and that until we were both happy with it.

We employ approximately 950 staff internationally in offices across Europe, Asia and North America of which 700 staff are based at our London headquarters.

Page 22: HANDIN TERM 3

Live brief

Most the final designs that will be on one side of the post cards. Each keeping with that Henderson looks.

HENDERSONS (starting point)

The other side of the postcard is the information side allowing students to follow Henderson’s with all the links, numbers and address. I wanted to keep the color and keep it similar to Henderson and what to represent them right. Highlighting information and quotes in bold capitals to capture the student’s eye.

Page 23: HANDIN TERM 3

Live brief

HENDERSONS (starting point)

The main point in the design was to find a catch phase or quote and high-lighter the words that we thought stood out. We also experimented with each card applying different amount of text to see what suits best for the direct mail.

Page 24: HANDIN TERM 3

Live brief

HENDERSONS (development of designs)

After choosing what we felt was best to be developed for the final design, we discussed this by facebook, email and by phone. Theses were a huge factor in the making of the direct mail and packaging.

We felt that the post card had to have enough text to give the student enough details on Henderson’s, but not be overloaded for them to just chuck this direct mail in the rubbish.

Page 25: HANDIN TERM 3

Live brief

HENDERSONS (final look)

Presenting was a great experience to get professional advice from the cli-ent and just presenting at that level was great. We designed the 4 boards around a template that relates to Henderson’s with the red, blue and white. Each bored explains the project, how we approached it and our final designs.

Final look at the 4 boards that will be presented to Paper Co and Hend-erson’s.

Page 26: HANDIN TERM 3

Live brief

Final look at the 4 boards that will be presented to Paper Co and Hend-erson’s.

HENDERSONS (Final boards)

The whole project was a pleasure to work on with a chance at the begin-ning to pick from a selection of briefs. Then doing a direct mail and adver-tising it was great because I got to do some much, from design to learn-ing so much about a company I did not know anything about. Working on a client brief was also exciting cause it felt like I was working in the real work and gave me a taste on what my life could be.

Page 27: HANDIN TERM 3

Live brief

So I designed a calendar that is laid out in a different way then a usual one, this would be printed on an A3 page to stick on their wall. Also leaving space on the paper to allow the students to write on it.

HENDERSONS (next step)

After presenting I wanted to push or add something of my own to the project. Here would be the next design to the Henderson package and above it is a calendar that is showing the dates to the Henderson road show. Something that I came up with and thought having a group of peo-ple from the company come talk to them and gives them a view on what the graduate plan is about.

Design

DESIGN INVESTIGATION (starting off)

Design investigation was set to each person to look into an area you enjoy, by contacting people, agencies and company that relate to that area. Get-ting information and trying to get an understanding on that area.

Beginning with subscribing to EYE magazine and my first issues’ that were on type and information graphics. This kept me up to date with what’s going on in the world of design, also teaching me about past designs and up and coming designers that share the same interest as me.

Also trying to email different people that I thought might help me but this was dead end because off the lack of email being replayed to me.

Email and eye magazine were two factors that were in-volve in my investigation.Images of my eye mag col-lection.

Page 29: HANDIN TERM 3

DESIGN INVESTIGATION (kemistry)

To continue my investigation I went on two visits, one being a trip to Kemistry design and branding company in London. They are a specialist-branding agency that under-standing media brands. i went on a group tour to there studios organized up by Sally-anne to help us with our investigation.

On arriving at the studios we went to there meeting room where they would discuss designs with clients or each other. They showed us a show reel of work that sums up the company and a demonstration on how Kemistry approach a project, how they would research and developing the idea.

17 days later… thoughts and ideas! This was how they would work to meet a dead-line.

Before rapping up on the studio talk we got shown a video on 10 things on what good design is by Kemistry. With the video followed a word or a saying, they our listed in order…

1. Conviction2. Make more simple 3. Do different4. Be brave5. Whisper don’t shout 6. Capture the essence7. Love the future 8. Make it beautiful 9. Embrace the ridiculous 10. Do it with passion

I really enjoyed this visit and it felt great to get a heads approach and hear how it would be if I worked for a design and branding company.

DESIGN INVESTIGATION (airside)

My second visit was to the company Airside a creative agency working across the disciplines of graphics design, illustration, digital, interactive and moving image. They have worked with nokia, London transport, Virgin Atlan-tic, V&A and the BBC. After being greeted outside we got shown around the studios and introduce to their small team and being told how they operate as a group.

Once seated we got shown there show reel that they use to get work for different companies. They also talk about how to get into the business with the correct way of pre-senting your work for a job. Lucky for us we got a chance to see some of the 3rd years portfolio from UCA and have them assessed from Airside. Each of the 6-portfolio work was different and presented in there own personal touch.

It was good to hear the feedback because if helped me understand how to display my work, the goods and the bad point of a portfolio and what Airside thought of the perfect way of presenting work.

Page 31: HANDIN TERM 3

Work Placement

WORK PLACEMENT (finding)

Another path of the design investigation was to get work placement for some sort, even if it’s with a company, studio or someone part of the indus-try. Thinking roughly on what could go on my CV and applying to company I choose to look up someone I knew a while ago, a freelance photographer and filmmaker. I texted/emailed him and asked if I could come down and help him out with anything or just learn more about being a freelancer and pick some knowledge of software.

Based in London so not too far away I worked a few days on some advertisements of a small project he started do called Movement for gloom. From editing images to learning more video edited software.

Above is a screen shot from his website.

Page 32: HANDIN TERM 3

Work Placement

WORK PLACEMENT (gloom)

Movement for Gloom is a DDM Productions new comedy web series ‘Move-ment For Gloom’ charts the rise and immediate fall of an uninspiring and dysfunctional collective of people with mediocre expectations as they at-tempt to get elected to office. Showcasing new British talent, videos are topical and satirical, drawing influences from The West Wing, Thick of It and Arrested Development.

I really got a feel on how the real world of being a designers and living up to huge deadlines and making sure the work is perfect.

Examples of the advertisements I worked on for the show. Being based around the election and a new party group the only thing I wanted to do was to make everything clear and easy to understand.

Work Placement

WORK PLACEMENT (gloom)

Working for Dan also gave me an idea of what I would like to do in the future after university, this opened my eyes to different paths I could take. After the week or work I wanted to learn more about final cut pro and start mak-ing some shorts videos.

GLOOM ON THE WEB! Other side of the placement was to advertise it on any social network and video website, to get more follower and spread the news for GLOOM.

THREE EXHIBITIONS’ INLONDON! You are to visit 3 exhibitions/museums and make a critical response to the work that you have seen. This could be either a visual response to the work or a critical review (written). In addition to critically evaluating the work us-ing either visual or written could you also explain the context of the work and how it was produced (methods)..

Images from the print galley I went to visit, I really enjoyed my time in side the print club galley. They had some amaz-ing work!

LAB: MAKE ME THINK!Lab was a project that allowed us to do anything and have it displayed over the graphics floor. I wanted to try something different so i did some letter-pressing to experiment and see what outcomes i could get. This was a good couple of week of learning something new and adding a new skill.

Lab

i really enjoyed this brief because i got to see what all the other student work is like and also making a connection with the 1st years. sort of making the university united and one and push-ing it to look more like a created workspace.

MY PHOTOGRAPHYI set of me taking a camera out and going around London shooting differ-ent things to try and develop my knowledge and technique with a camera. Mostly taken on a Canon D60. I did not want to stick with a theme and I just stayed open to anything, hoping to get some good shots.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE(football)

For my independent practice I wanted to do something completely different then following something that is only graphic design. I decided to combined two things I enjoy most, one being information graphics and the other being football. I wanted to look at the information after a football match and de-velop mutable ways of displaying it.

Page 49: HANDIN TERM 3

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE (the fans thought)

To research into how the fans were feeling I looked into the arsenal blogs and chat rooms to see what their view was. With two big statements as my starting point and hoping that a comment relating has been written, one being about winning the league and the other about the manger. After look-ing at blog after blog I came across comments that I could use, by taking them and forming blog poster of the question and the answer sticking out of them. I did not want to stick with one side and be negative so I’m using both sides to level it.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE(football match)

After awatching afootball match and seeing all the information they would get from one game, it gave me an idea to look up the game on sky sports. Taking the key information from a game like goals, fouls, and subs. So I looked itup and took the information from the Arsenal vs. Tottenham match.

INDEPENDENT: YES OR NO?Each of the design has been affected on how the season has gone on. The information on the right hand side was done at a time when we had 6 games to go. Still showing hope to win the title I thought I would do a design, which reflects on the long wait for a trophy. Asking the reader yes or no?

Page 55: HANDIN TERM 3

INDEPENDENT: HOME OR AWAYLooking at the different blogs and reading how the fans are comparing home and away games. They compare fans, prices and atmosphere saying how the game has changed at your local ground; most of them agree that the club is stealing money from them. Taking the information and turning it into a post-er, the one on the top right. Take the argument of comparing into a strong bold message to the football club.

INDEPENDENT: FOOTBALL VIDEO (STARTING POINT)After look at football chat rooms and seeing how fans are affected by football. I was thinking i could do another information graphics but then i had a thought of filming a short 2-3 minutes interview on how football effects a person social life. Seeing their point on the game and how its effect them, the fans.

Filming around the stadium on a match day at arsenal to get enough action and movement to be place through out the video with the interview of scott.

INDEPENDENT: FOOTBALL VIDEO (FILMING)Singling the video to interviewing one person, so i choose my brother Scott Davis to be my first interview. Being a massive fan of arsenal and the game he was the perfect candidate for this video. Asking questions like...

1. who introduce you to football?2. How do you feel on ticket prices?3. How much of your social life is football?4. Favorite monument in football history?

and many more, this is still a work in progress and trying to prefect the video to a level i’m happy with.

Final look at a rough edit of the video, showing clips or arsenal football ground and scott being interviewed.

EVALUATION

This year has had a verity of projects from printing to video editing, the term has really made me stay on my feet and approach this term in a new say.

For this semester and looking back at the projects its seems to have a ring of group projects and being productive with other people that you normally don’t work with. There have been ups and downs with working in groups, the positives being discovering how others work and think. Coming up with brand new amazing ideas and enjoying the monument of being in a group of people that enjoy the same thing as you. The negatives being the communication with someone that you normally don’t work trying to message them but get no feed back for a fews days or never. If i could be in a group with people i would choose them knowing that they up to doing the standard or work for a second year group.

I have really enjoyed the chances of learning new printing techniques in the print area. from wood-cut to letterpress. i really have enjoyed the letterpress because of the unexpected quality to each letter. This was one element that made me want to redo this sort of printing.

With so many different chances to show off your work around and outside of university and getting the experience of getting my work seen by others and getting critical feed back on it has been a great opportunity. This has made want to do more work and send it out to different companies and competition.

Im still not too sure on what path i would i like to take with new things being introduced to me, it keeps me thinking about what i could do. Whatever path i take the thing i know is that i would like to be working with people i know because of the knowing of there skills and what they can do (strengths and weakness). Also have just touching on video editing and making videos i really want to learn more about the software and heighten my skills as a designer.
