For this idea, the spiral scarf pattern had to wait a few more days. SHOES. I've always wanted tomake shoes. Any shoes. The closest I've come are some knitted and felted ary !anes. They're nice,

"#t they're ho#se shoes and that p#t them in the same cate$ory as socks. y fantasy has "een towalk in town in my very own handmade shoes. It seemed so e%citin$ and yet impossi"le at the sametime.

&ntil today.

S#mmer shoes are a challen$e for me. I don't own flip flops, "eca#se I can't find anythin$ to likea"o#t them e%cept may"e their price ta$. y toes hate to "e separated "y a r#""er thin$y and I'mneither a fan of the so#nd they make nor the name. How can anyone tr#st a shoe called a flip flop .

(eedless to say, yo# can't r#n in them. Admitted there are some nice desi$ns o#t there and some people can really p#ll them off, "#t the toe iss#e has forever prevented me from $ettin$ the n#m"erone s#mmer shoe. That is #ntil last week.

)hy have I converted* )ell, I haven't, "#t I tho#$ht the soles were +#ite #sef#l and may"e, #stmay"e I co#ld fi$#re a way to attach somethin$ somehow to make them into weara"le footwear.

)hen yo# look at the constr#ction of shoes, the concept is +#ite simple. There's the sole and an#pper part $l#ed to it. I don't like $l#e that m#ch in any of my work, "#t I #nderstand its necessity inmany applications. Shoes are one of them. And then I tried a few short c#ts and #sed an e%istin$ flipflop sole -"eca#se every once in a while I try thin$s and........IT )O/0E1. 2ook at this. 3o# canmake yo#r own pair of s#mmer sandals in no time. And yo# can "e very creative in c#stomi4in$ 5

Materials:

5 flip flops -prefera"ly #sed5 scissors5 piece of chalk or marker5 craft knife5 heavy d#ty waterproof $l#e5 recycled t5shirts

5 screw driver 5 flat "#tter knife or thin plastic r#ler to st#ff fa"ric into the soles. -(ot shown5 clamps -or heavy "ooks

Make:

7#t the r#""er "its at the point where they come thro#$h the sole. 2eave #st the pl#$ "etweenyo#r toes in place -the one that hold the foot down. 8l#e that in place /emove the other two in therear.

These holes will "e #sed for the ties aro#nd yo#r ankles.

Take a lon$ strip -9in wide and lon$ eno#$h to wrap aro#nd yo# ankle and knot one end. Thread itthro#$h the hole with a screwdriver and $l#e in place. The knot will nestle nicely into the hole fromthe pl#$ yo#'ve removed, so yo#'re not walkin$ on it.

7#t 9 strips of t5shirts : wide and appro%. ; lon$. 3o# will need to e%periment a "it. Every foot isdifferent and the t5shirt material has a different stretch.

St#ff the strips into the incision yo#'ve made crossin$ them over the foot. I #sed a protractor "eca#se that was the only thin$ I co#ld find in my creative fren4y.

)hen yo# are happy with the look, $l#e the strips in place, followin$ the direction for the $l#e yo#are #sin$.

7lamp to$ether and wait an ho#r or two, #ntil the $l#e is really dry. 3o#'ve done it.

There are a million variations on this theme6Instead of 9 incisions at each side, yo# can also make a lon$er incision and s+#ee4e a wider stripinto the $ap. Or s+#ee4e = separate strip into each $ap and tie them into a "ow across yo#r foot.3o# co#ld decorate the shoe. Flowers, "#ttons, "rooches.

y idea was to make many pairs to show different ideas, "#t I $ot so e%cited and wanted to sharethis "efore everyone r#ns off to the "each for the month of A#$#st -well, at least the French do andI tr#st that yo# are perfectly a"le to e%periment yo#rselves. I'm already thinkin$ of some f#n wintershoes.

)hat is not very cool is that flip flops are not environmental friendly. They're made from petrole#mand travel all the way from 7hina to "e sold for &S19.>>. That so#nds awf#lly wron$, doesn't it*

I wonder if yo$a mats will work as well* They wo#ld have even more f#n colors.......may"e theyco#ld "e stacked, to make platea# shoes. That'll $ive my ?': some "oost...So I don't have to standon my tip toes like (icolas Sarko4y.
