Headlines

A headline is a heading usually on top of an article in a newspaper. It contains words to tell what the article is about. It is usually in bold font to attract peoples’ attention to make readers to read the whole article.

Unlike any piece of literary work, news stories have no titles; they have headlines. Headlines are considered to be the display windows of newspapers intending to catch the readers’ attention. Bruce Westley, author of the book entitled "News Editing", says that writing headlines is one of the most challenging jobs of the copy desk because it has to embody the jist of the news which need to keep the readers want to read more.

Characteristics of a headline

The way headlines are written varies from one newspaper to the other but most headlines have these common characteristics:

Eye catching- Use words that are thought-arousing.Believable- Do not get so wrapped up in trying to make your headline so prepped up that you become untruthful.Easy to read- Use a font style that is readable and understandable.Active voice- Use verbs that are in the active voice. Avoid using verbs in passive form for they make headlines lousy.Brief- Brevity is the key. Make your headline short and simple without compromising the essential details.Precise and concise- Headlines should not leave false impressions to the readers.

Tips for headline writing

The headline should be constructed simply and clearly. The first letter the first word (may it be or not a proper noun) and proper nouns should be capitalized.Use colorful and vigorous verbs on the present form to connote freshness of the news.Never use the word "may" for it gives a hint of uncertainty, thus stripping the authority of the news item.Omit articles (a, an, the) and other words such as "to be" and "and". Instead use commas as substitute for the word "and".Use brief language. Use the shortest words possible.Avoid using abbreviations unless widely known.Be positive. Avoid negative words. They weaken not only the headlines but also the news stories.

Mechanics of headline writing

After having an idea what to write in your headline, the next step is to construct it in a way that it fits the space allocation on the page. We have to consider the presentation of different sizes and kinds of type in various column widths. A headline schedule would be handy for us to know the number of letters that can fit in a particular space allocation.

This was stressed by counsels of meralco led by Angara abello Concepcion Regalla & Cruz (ACCRA) law Offices senior pArtner Victor Lazatin and Retired SC Justice Florentino feliciano, who warned of repercussions in Meralco’s services should the tro stay in effect for a longer period.

“A TRO or injunction will stop delivery of fuel to GenCOs (generation companies) and the unpaids GENCOs will likely stop delivering power,” Lazatin stressed during Tuesday’s oral arguments

With the TRO, Meralco explaine that the generation charge iss froze at P5.67 but there is still sufficient power supply for now considering that  the months of Jan and February  are thelowest off-peak months.

But, with the summer months approaching, meralco noted that demand will increased by eight percent in March, 16 percent in April, 17 percent in May and 16 percent in June

“Dire consequences to the economy will be broughts about by rotating blackouts, not too mention the likely loss off investors’s confidence due to perceived instability of our laws and regulatory rules,” he stressed

“The TrO should lifted be for petitioners’ failure to establish clear end unmistakable rights alleged to have been violated by MeralcO,Meralco’ alleged invasion of petitioners’ right to due processs, and the existence of grive and irreparable injury,” lazatin told the court.

The TRO was issued by the high court on Dec. 23 last year and is set to lapse on Feb. 23. Petitioners questionings the legality of the rate hike, on the other hand, wanted it extended until the SC rules on the case.

NewsNews is a piece of literary work used to convey ideas of recent happenings unto the public. It contains facts that

are used to inform others of what occurred at a certain time at a certain place. It is a way for people to know the "scoop" about a timely situation.

News Values

Timeliness- A news story would be highly appreciated if it is gives information pertaining to events that is happening. Though it is presented immediately, the accuracy and proximity of information must not be compromised. Here is an example of an article taken from www.yahoo.com

PNP changes criminal documentation procedures after lapses in Navarro case The Philippine National Police (PNP) will implement changes in the way it documents crime after admitting lapses in

reporting the incident surrounding the mauling of actor-host Vhong Navarro. ---

Proximity- Closeness not only to the place but of the interests of readers. Readers would be more interested if the news story is happening within their community, especially if it has a great effect in their lives.

CHR pursuing complaints vs Duterte in Senate, OmbudsmanHuman Rights Commission (CHR) chairperson Etta Rosales will soon lodge formal complaints against Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for his murder threats against smugglers.

Oddity- A news story must be unusual. Anything that deviates from the normal course of events is worthy of news writing. Just like what is stated in many journalism books, “When a dog bites a man, it is not news. When a man bites a dog that is absolutely a news.” Here is an article taken from anc.yahoo.com

Addicted-to-love British man 'cured' by Pinay One could say that Ron Sheppard, a 65-year-old British man, was addicted to love. That's probably why he was married eight times, a feat that earned him the notorious title, "The Most Married Man in the UK." His first marriage was when he was 19, back in 1966. That marriage lasted just two years. He went on to his next seven wives.

Significance- This value does not only pertain to the importance of an event but also how this event will affect the people. Here is an example of an article taken from philstar.com

Meralco: No hike in January billingMANILA, Philippines - The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), the country’s biggest power distributor, will temporarily peg the generation charge for the month of January at P5.67 per kilowatt-hour from an earlier estimate of P7.37 per kwh in deference to the 60-day temporary restraining order (TRO) issued by the Supreme Court.

News

Page 17: Handout Testor

Prominence- Prominence refer to people and places. News stories that are written about famous people and places are highly appreciated by people. Famous people such as, government officials, celebrities, rich people or big corporations are familiar to many people.

The lead

The beginning of a news story is called the lead. It is the most important part of the entire account. The lead answers the questions who, what, where, why, when and how (also known as the 5 wives and 1 husband).

A good lead is short and provocative. It emphasizes the news feature, the most dramatic and the most arresting element of the story. There are two types of leads. The summary or conventional lead and the novelty or unconditional lead.
