don’t Look at the duck: Engaging Students in Science with Lance rougeux

What’s the one thing our classrooms have in common today? They are all very different. Students with many different learning styles. Different interests. Different backgrounds. And, different gadgets. How do we address the needs of today’s learners? This session will draw upon real-life examples (including a legendary school duck) as we explore ways that we can use media and other technologies to get students interested in the content and engaged in meaningful learning experiences.

Lance Rougeux, is a former middle school teacher who holds master’s degrees in Educational Leadership and Technology in Education from Villanova University and Harvard University, respectively. He currently serves at the Vice President of Learning Communities and Instructional Implementation at Discovery Education.

Things That Make Them Go “Ohhhh” with patti duncan

Generating interest and activating prior knowledge is an important part of any science lesson. While there are many ways to engage students scientific demonstrations are fun, exciting and often generate many good questions. In this session we will pair scientific demonstrations with Discovery Education Science Techbook concepts and digital resources. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about the demos as well as practice them. You might even get to blow something up!!!

Effective Evaluation with discovery Education Science Techbook with Mike Bryant

Discovery Education’s services are ideal for both formative and summative evaluations. Learn how to use the resources from Discovery Education to develop formative and summative evaluations to determine your student’s understanding of the concepts you teach.

Mike Bryant started his career working as Director of Children Programs for the YMCA in Upstate South Carolina, where he developed “Teen Connection,” their first middle school program designed to connect students with career professionals. Mike made the move to education in 1999, teaching high school biology and chemistry in Orlando, FL before heading up the 21st Century Community Learning Centers for Levy County Florida in 2004. During his time as program administrator, Mike incorporated technology and digital storytelling into the curriculum. In 2005 Mike joined the Discovery Education team as a District Manager and now serves as Director of Instructional Implementation.

“Sounds” Like a 21st Century Lesson with patti duncan

Grab your backpack and join us in the Discovery Education Techbook Traveling Classroom for a lesson on sound, vibration and pitch. Experience a typical student centered lesson infused with media and hands-on activities that is sure to increase engagement and understanding.

Patti Duncan is a former food chemist and 12 year science classroom veteran who has presented workshops for teachers nationally and globally. As a member of Discovery Education’s Instructional Implementation team, Patti spends her days creating opportunities that help teachers make the digital transition in their classrooms.

What’s the GIST? Bridging Literacy and Science with Brad Fountain

Promoting literacy in the classroom is no longer JUST part of the reading lesson. The importance of developing the literate learner falls on all educators and is taught during all lessons. By using digital media in conjunction with traditional reading strategies, we can address the science and literacy standards, differentiate for students, and address the Shifts in Common Core. This session will provide concrete literacy examples that can be scaffolded to meet the needs of students across any grade level and readily integrated into your science lesson on Monday morning.

Brad Fountain is a former teacher in a 3-5 grade multi-age classroom in rural North Carolina and was also the administrator of the NC Model Technology School for 2003 at Pathways Elementary School in Orange County. Mr. Fountain is now Director of Instructional Implementation for the Discovery Education Science Techbook.
