No, the hanging curse takes its namefrom the way it hangs, like the legendary Swordof Damocles, until one day it drops.It works like this: The demonic supervillain gesturesdramatically and declares, My ire shall fallupon thee should you ever talk to Janice again!or some other similar trigger condition. should you ever raise violent hand against meis a pragmatic alternative, while the next timethou hast the temerity to micturate standing upis a dramatic combo of cruelty and weird specificity.The trigger action can vary widely.The effect of the curse varies, but as long as yourolled a Patient Corruption set while placing it, itgoes into effect the instant the target performsthe forbidden action. Specifically, the curse immediatelyremoves one point from a designatedVirtuous Strategy. The point does not slide; itsjust gone. It comes back only in the usual difficultways you gain points in a Virtuous Strategy.You can curse someone as many times as youwant, but the most recent success is the onlyone thats supernaturally enforced. (You may notwant to let people know thatif you fool them,they might avoid five or six behaviors, not justthe last one forbidden. On the other hand, if theynotice that one curse didnt take effect, they mayassume all of them are bluff. Take your chances.If they do know the curse works, its really fun tocall out two or three fakes with each real one.)The overarching effect of the Hanging Curse is togive your enemies an unpalatable choice. Theycan avoid the action you forbade (thereby lettingyou control them) or they can suck it up and takethe hit on Patient, Open or Insightful. Once thecurse discharges, its done until another is placed.While the Hanging Curse is powerful, it does havelimits. First off, it only works if the victim canhear and comprehend the forbiddance.(If she doesnt know what to avoid, she doesntsquirm, and whats the fun for your demon inthat?) Secondly, its one to a customer. You canactually remove someones Hanging Curse byreplacing it with something like Yeah yeah, feelmy wrath if you ever, um, jump to the sun. Thequality of the roll doesnt matter, rememberjusthow recent it is.As for the form the curse takes, thats up to you.If you target Patience, he could become subtlyscatterbrained or plagued by terrifying hallucinatoryclowns. A decrease in Insightful could inflictTourettes-like impulsive cursing, or it could justbe a shady cast to his features that make everystatement and question seem vaguely sleazy.Open could be anything from weeping sores tosourceless lethargy.
