Centrifuge Theory
RotorsIt is the method to indicate the relative centrifugal force by thefollowing equation according to centrifugal speed of rotor (rpm). The reason to use rpm instead of the relative centri-fugal force is tomeasure each speed precisely with motor speed per minute (N, rpm) asit is very difficult to measure its speed by the relative centrifugal force.
K-FactorAnother variable of the rotor is K-Factor. K-Factor is used for predictingthe experiment time of the best suited. For example, the rotor’s K-Factor without shielding is 402. At that time, the speed is 2,000 rpmand it is indicated the time to need in separating from the maximumspeed is t=402/100=4.02 hour=4 hour 1 minute.The main reason to use K-Factor is that each rotor has different RCFand also the RCF is different even the material are same on thedifferent location. As it has different value by the materials speed and sedimentationdistance, K-Factor is used to make same value after make calibration.See Picture 1 It means K-Factor is used to make fixed value not relatedwith each speed and sedimentation distance. K-Factor is only affectedby the speed of the rotation.
The time prediction of centrifugal separationIf the sedimentation factor is known, the required time to do pellet is
predicted by using the following equality t=k/s ( t: operating time, k-K-
Factor, s=Sedimentation Factor )
When the user make separation of materials which have same
sedimentation factors with different rotors, the separating time is
reduced in case he use the rotor which has smaller K-Factor. In
addition, the user can predict the pellet time with using different rotors
with the above equality when the use has to make centrifugal
separation with using various rotors unavoidably.
For example, how many time is required to make separation in
condition of angle rotor 20,000rpm comparing that it takes 4 hours to
make separation with using the swing rotor’s speed 40,000rpm?
Every rotor has the different K value and user can get the Required K
value with the calculating equality t=k/s. therefore, K value in the
condition of swing rotor is 370 and the value in angle rotor
20,000rpm is 125. it can be calculated and solved by following
proportional expression. 370:4=125:X. X=1.35 hours So, the user can
get predicted time to make separation as like the above.
Effectiveness of Gross Centrifugal ForceEffectiveness of Gross Centrifugal Force is an integral calculus to each
speed by the time. This effectiveness is required to make same result
for the experiment even every machine has the different time for
acceleration and speed reduction.
It is the gross area of the red colored part. See Picture 2 the main
purpose to use this effectiveness is to make calculation objectively
from the subjective calculation which get different of the Effectiveness
of Gross Centrifugal Force by different centrifuges.
Therefore, the user can make operation in convenience the other
centrifuges to get same result after using the one centrifuge. The each
speed is calculated by following equality.
Relative Centrifugal Force (R.C.F)It is indicated the power which the factor takes regarding tocentrifugal speed and indicated by the ratio comparing the power ofthe gravity to the power which the factor takes. It means the relativecentrifugal force (RCF) is indicated as a ratio comparing the powerwhich the factor takes in the condition of centrifugation to the force ofgravity. The main factors to determine RCF are the distance of the particlefrom the axis of rotation, each speed of rotation (RPM) and the gravityacceleration (980cm/sec). RCF is proportional to the square of the speed so RCF increases 4times of the speed when the speed increases 2 times. The main reasonto use RCF instead of ACF (Absolute Centrifugal Force) can adopt allparticles’ mass. In case of using ACF.It is difficult to adopt all particle’s mass as centrifugal force is increasedaccording to increase the particle’s mass. This is indicated and expressed by xg and xg means it is not related onthe particle’s mass. In case of calculating the particle’s mass at thesame time, It is the particle’s centrifugal force. But, RCF is affected byits location even the materials are both of same. The main factor is thedistance of the particle from the axis of rotation. For example, the RCFto the particle located in the most near of the axis is smaller than theparticle located in the most far of the axis. They are called rmin formost near location and rmax for most far location.
