Hanmer Happenings
From the Principal’s Desk
Spring 2013 Dear Hanmer Families,
May promises to be a busy month. A number of classes
are going on field trips and to kick off the month, all
students will participate in a Hip Hop Dance Workshop
for an entire week. This program is funded by the PTO
and promises to be a lot of fun. Instructors will come in
and work with students during their PE/Music time to
learn the movements and rhythm of dance.
As I visit classrooms, I enjoy seeing the variety of
projects that students are working on. They’re engaged
in all types of reading and writing. In math, students are
moving on to more complex concepts and we continue to
focus on helping students learn their basic facts. You can
certainly help with this at home by encouraging students
to play math games on the computer or by going through
flashcards with your child.
Finally, we’re all glad that spring is finally here! Students
are getting more fresh air and exercise at recess and
we’re all enjoying the longer hours of sunshine. Please
remember to send your children with sweatshirts and
jackets until the temperatures really warm up! As
always, if you have any ideas, questions or concerns,
please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Margaret Zacchei
Hard to believe that it is already Spring! We are getting ready
for our 2nd annual Pancake Breakfast, BOGO Bookfair and a trip
to the New Britain Rockcats game!
We had another very successful Hanmer Variety Show! There
are very talented students (and faculty) at our school! If you
haven’t seen the faculty’s surprise performance, please check
out the link on our webpage at www.hanmerschool.com!
Our spring fundraiser was a great success, raising over $2,800!
Thank you to everyone who participated! We thought we’d try
something different this year, and we really got a great response.

Spring is here! Here are some tips to keep your children safe at this time of year when they are
venturing outside and starting to play outdoor sports.
Always use protective equipment (helmets, pads, etc.) for sports and recreational activities
Maintain safe playing conditions, such as field surfacing, equipment maintenance, and
adequate adult supervision
Develop and enforce safety rules
Ensure that kids drink adequate amounts of water
Provide kids with proper training and skills building when learning a new sport
Have kids take the same precautions during practice that they would during a game
Don’t forget to wear protective gear yourselves. Remember that your kids are watching
you!
I would also like to remind sixth grade parents that he State of Connecticut Health Assessment
Record is due to me by June 1, 2013. There are still some forms that have not been turned in.
These must be in by June 1 in order for your child to start middle school in September! Please
contact me with questions or if your child is not scheduled to see his/her health care provider
until after June 1. Thank you!
Scoliosis screening will be done on all fifth grade students this month. A letter will be going home
with the date and other details. Only those sixth graders who have not handed in the State of
Connecticut Health Assessment Record will need to be screened in school.

A.W. HANMER SCHOOL PTO MINUTES
April 23, 2013
Welcome/Introductions
The regular meeting of the A.W. Hanmer School PTO was called to order at 7:03 pm in the Hanmer Media Center.
In attendance
Melissa Hart, Kim Wolf, Valerie Hart, Margaret Zacchei, Kris Viner, Mia Caulfield, Pamela Molochko, Angela Stearns, Marie Massaro, Deanna Cawley Ford, Joy DePaolis
Boy Scout Report
Art Bruce, the Hanmer School Cub Scout Troop Cub Master, presented Melissa Hart with the charter showing that the PTO is the sponsor for the Hanmer Cub scout troop, which is open to boys in Grades 1 - 5. Mr. Bruce was accompanied den leader Paul Langdon.
Cub Scout Max Langdon described to the group some of the many activities that the troop has participated in, including the Pinewood Derby and a sleepover at Battleship Cove.
Approval of Minutes
The minutes from the March meeting were approved with no changes.
Wethersfield Early Childhood Collaborative
Marie Massaro, director of the Wethersfield Early Childhood Collaborative (WECC), provided the group with an overview of the collaborative’s findings and strategies for improvement.
The collaborative is a coalition of committed individuals whose shared goal is to prepare and support children, birth to eight, for good health and school success by building awareness of the importance of early care and education.
The result statement for the Collaborative is “All Wethersfield Children, Birth to Eight, are Healthy, Developmentally Successful Learners and Connected to the Community.”
Some of the findings the WECC is addressing in their initiatives are: o In recent years, as many as 33% of Wethersfield women have not received adequate prenatal
care. Data indicates that White, non-Hispanic women have the highest levels of non-adequate prenatal care
o About 30% of Wethersfield children may be characterized as overweight or obese. o Nearly 2/3 of Wethersfield children may be entering kindergarten with less than adequate language
and literacy skills, placing them at a disadvantage for ongoing educational achievement. o Approximately 40% of Wethersfield children do not meet the State goal for reading in 3rd grade, a
critical indicator of future educational performance. To learn the strategies the WECC has identified for addressing these issues, for more information regarding
the WECC, or to become involved, please visit the WECC on the web at www.wethersfield.k12.ct.us/page.cfm?p=2543 or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/WethersfieldEarlyChildhoodCollaborative

SCHOOL PERFORMANCE
Friday MAY 3rd, 1:40–2:40 PM, in hanmer gym
ACES
May is National Physical Fitness and Sports month. To help celebrate it, on Wednesday, May 1st, 2013, at 10:00 a.m., children throughout the world will be
exercising simultaneously for 15 minutes in the ACES Project: All Children Exercising Simultaneously.
This event was created to emphasize the importance of physical activity in the pursuit of happier, healthier, and more productive lives. It is important that we
recognize the value of incorporating exercise and sports into our daily lives. Regular physical activity is vital to good health, and by maintaining an active lifestyle, we can
reduce our risks of developing negative health conditions.
This year, more than 11 million children are expected to participate in the event. This is the 15th year that Wethersfield elementary schools will join in the celebration.
We encourage everyone to use this day as the starting point to begin our own personal fitness programs.
Please remind your children to wear sneakers on this day. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in making this a joyful and meaningful event for all
students.

Physical Education
Field Day
Field Day will be held on Friday, May 24th, 2013, from 9:45 AM to 12:00 PM (rain date: Friday, June 7th). All parents are invited to attend. Field Day is a way to bring the community and the school together to support an active lifestyle. It is a day
full of physical activities, showcasing some of the movements, skills, activities, problem-solving techniques, and cooperative games that the students have learned throughout
the year.
Please remember to have your child wear comfortable clothing and sneakers, and you may want to apply sunscreen on your child since we will be outside all morning. Students have been asked, if possible, to wear a specific color shirt that matches his or
her group’s color.
A picnic lunch will follow the morning’s activities. Students should bring a bagged lunch with a non-glass beverage, or they can purchase a bagged lunch from a limited cafeteria menu. We need to have the lunch count in advance, so if your child is going to buy a lunch, please return the form with your child’s choice to his or classroom
Teacher by Friday, May 17th. Thank you and I am looking forward to an active and enjoyable day.
