The last few weeks have been a bit hectic for me. Spending a week in Canberra
and then a week at Stanthorpe while still trying to ensure that the school still
operates smoothly has certainly been challenging for me. Luckily we have an
awesome staff at Hannaford and they keep things operating wonderfully in my
absence.
As most of you are aware, I have been given the appointment of acting principal
at Hannaford for Term 4. I am really excited about this and I am genuinely look-
ing forward to spending more time with the students, parents and the communi-
ty as I get to know you all better and do my part to ensure that this community
continues to be one that we can all be proud of.
Over the next few weeks, the students will be finalising their assessment for the
term. As such we encourage them to attend school every day to get the work
completed and avoid ‘catch up’ days. We know the boys and girls have worked
really hard this term and we wish them all the best with their assessments.
Our Facebook page is up and running again. Please feel free to visit to keep up to
date on news, events and reminders regarding the ‘goings on’ at the school. I
have also added a couple of photos and documents to the school webpage.
As this is the last newsletter for the term, I would like to take this opportunity to
thank everyone for their support and wish you all a safe and enjoyable break.
Thanks,
Carl Knappstein

Ms Lovell’s Yr 1-2 News
Ms Lovell’s Year 1 & 2 Class Year 1 & 2 have been busy with the new unit of Maths – Geometric
Shapes. In week 6 both classes had fun playing Shape Twister on the
mat in our classroom. After identifying and describing the various
2D shapes, year 1 made pictures on the floor using different col-
oured shapes. Year 2 drew and described 3D shapes and then cut
out and constructed their own choice of a 3D shape.
For studies in HASS, some year 2 students got the opportunity to call
home on Ms Lovell’s replica 1930s black dial telephone. They en-
joyed using an old phone and calling Mum during school hours!!
Our table of old things has increased to include a very old copper
kettle with wooden handle (thank you Savenna), a very old leather
saddle bag (thank you Joy), a very old measuring cup and scales
(thank you Claire) and a very, very old wood stove-top iron (thank
you Fiona). The students were shocked that ironing would have
been such an arduous task before the invention of modern, electric
irons!
End of term is fast approaching and the students will be engaged in
completing some assessment for term 3. Students cannot achieve
their best if absent on a regular basis or homework is ignored!! I
would like to stress the importance of school attendance – EVERY
DAY COUNTS!

The trip started at Hannaford and then we picked up the rest of the group at Moonie. All was going well until the
bus broke down. We had to wait at Moonie State School for two hours for another bus to pick us up. Thankfully,
that was the only problem we faced for the entire trip.
Day 1:
We arrived in Sydney at 6am on Sunday morning. The students were given the opportunity to become TV stars
by being in the background on the set of Sunrise. From there, we all headed to the ferries where we caught a
ferry to Taronga Zoo. The children had a great time wandering around the zoo looking at and learning about
animals from Australia and around the world. We were all exhausted when we boarded the bus to head to our
accommodation in Canberra.
Day 2:
The group woke up early and headed for the snow fields. The sounds of excitement form the students as we
ventured further into the snow was awesome. It was the first time many of them, and myself, had seen snow.
We spent the next few hours playing in the snow – tobogganing, building snow men, and throwing snow balls at
each other. We finished up drinking hot chocolate and getting back onto the bus to head back to our cabins for
hot showers and dinner.
Day 3:
Our first stop after breakfast was at the National Museum. We walked around looking at the exhibits. The kids
engaged in an activity where they created a robot and used it to solve problems on an interactive adventure
game. We then travelled to the Museum of Australian Democracy. The students were able to learn about the 2
chambers of government and also research some of our prior Prime Ministers. They sat in the old House of Rep-
resentatives and did a short role playing activity. After the museum, we spent some time at Geo-Science Austral-
ia where we learnt about rock formation and earthquakes. The kids thoroughly enjoyed exploring fossils, rocks
and other features of the earth as they independently engaged in a wide range of activities, puzzles and games
in the laboratory. From here we travelled to Mt Ainsley. This is known as the best spot to view Canberra. It was
pretty spectacular. We walked down the mountain along the trail and headed home for dinner. At 7pm we
hopped back on the bus and drove to the Australian Institute of Sport. We were taken on a tour by professional
javelin thrower Jess Bell. We were able to see volleyballers training and we went into the aquatic training centre.
They were then able to test their own sporting abilities in Sportex, an arcade style venue based on sporting skills.
We made it back to the cabins by 9pm for a well deserved rest.
Day 4:
We started the day at Questacon where the group participated in a variety of self guided, interactive science
activities. They spent an hour exploring the 5 floors of science. This was concluded with a show that taught the
students how musical instruments make sounds. We then had an early lunch and headed to the Australian War
Memorial. We were given a tour of some impressive exhibits and then were able to walk around the displays at
our own pace. We ended the visit taking a walk down the main street admiring the collection of giant memorials
that have been constructed. We then went home for dinner and finished the day with a game of mini golf at the
holiday park where we stayed.
Day 5:
Our final day began with a trip to the Australian Mint. We learnt how coins are made and distributed throughout
Australia and other parts of the world. The students were fascinated by the robots that were used to assist with
the process, especially Titan, a robot that lifts a 750kg drum of metal disks and tips them into a hopper. From the
mint, we went to Parliament House where the group learnt about the voting process and even participated in a
‘mock’ election. We were also given a tour of the building and we visited the new House of Representatives and
Senate. We then caught an elevator and walked on the grassy roof of Parliament. For dinner we walked back to
Questacon for a roast dinner and then boarded the bus for Queensland.

Overall, the trip was a huge success. The students had fun, learnt a great deal about of nation’s capital,
made some new friends and saw things they have never seen before. Their behaviour was exceptional and
I was so proud to be a part of this group. I think this experience has had a positive impact on the children
and I hope that the memories from this trip will last forever.

Science Week
On Wednesday 21 August 2019, our year 5/6 girls, Sarah, Ally and Emily, were
given the opportunity to attend a Science day at Tara Shire State College.
During the day they worked as a team to make a batch of sour sherbet in Food
Science. They also had to design, create and test a small craft that could safely
and gently land on a flat surface in Space Science.
The girls had a great time and increased their understand-
ing of scientific procedures and working as a team. I was
there as they tested their landing craft, and although their
design was simple, it successfully landed on most
attempts.
Other staff who were present commented on the wonder-
ful behaviour and effort our girls displayed on the day. It
is fantastic to get this positive feedback from the commu-
nity. Well done girls!

Olympics Unleashed Olympian Olivia Tauro came to speak to the students on
Tuesday 27th. The students heard about Olivia’s career,
from her wish as a 10 year-old at the Sydney Olympics, to
achieving her goal of being one of Australia’s fastest run-
ners. She also stressed to the students that you must
work hard, focus, be your best and take all opportunities
for whatever career you choose in life. Olivia also em-
phasised the need for good food, plenty of sleep and ex-
ercise to keep your body in peak condition. After some
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oi, oi, oi war cries with
the students, Olivia left some information
and award certificates for any students who
demonstrate the Olympic spirit of friendship,
respect and striving to be your best self.
One of our school leaders, Ally, thank Olivia
for her interesting talk and offering her time
to share with the school.
Congratulations to our Students of
the Week!! What a great effort!
Charlotte, Rebekah, Isabella, Jahzara
and Charlie.
