The Town of Hanover invited our PROBUS Club to send representatives to a series of discussion groups, focusing on future plans over the next 15 years. Focus workshops were run dealing with various themes: recreation, sports, arts, and culture. Our views with a seniors’ perspective were sought while the younger generations were also well represented.

Speaker Presentations: Bruce Grey Mentorship – Greg Dow

Greg Dow of Bruce Grey Mentorship accompanied by Ted Filsinger (mentor) were

introduced by Linda Vallie.

Bruce Grey Mentorship was established in 2015 when the area Big Brothers Big Sisters

organization folded. Their official launch was in 2017 when they began to accept

applications with a mandate to reach families in need in Hanover. They are following the

philosophy of “It takes a Village to Raise a Child”. Mentors are screened and trained to

fill a void in families where one, or both parents are absent. At this time there are 16

mentees and 11 active mentors. Monthly group programmes are offered as well as

small community events where mentors and mentees enjoy bi-weekly activities of

special interest to the individuals. The goal is to fill the gaps in the community and

support the parent.

Current needs for the organization include positions on the Board of Directors, mentors

(particularly men) and fund raising volunteers. The two current fundraising events for

the organization are Curling For Kids and a Lip Sync Battle.

Greg introduced Ted Filsinger who has been a mentor since 1991, mentoring four boys.

He recounted some anecdotes from the time he has spent with his mentees. This spring,

he will be travelling south to share in the destination wedding of one of his earliest

mentees. He has a real enthusiasm for the role of mentor and his relationship with his

mentees and enthusiastically encouraged anyone interested to consider joining the

organization.

Speaker Greg Dow Linda Vallie shows Greg our appreciation.

Bluewater Radio, Andy McBride Bob Farrow thanks Andy.

Bluewater Radio – Andy McBride

Bob Farrow introduced our guest speaker, Andy McBride, General Manager for

Bluewater Radio.

Originally from Scotland, Andy was thrown into farming at age 16 when his father died.

He eventually sold the farm and came to Canada. He ended up in Walkerton for health

reasons related to a strain of E Coli and became involved with Bluewater Radio.

In 1929, a proposal to set up a radio station in Hanover was unsuccessful and resulted in

CKNX being established in Wingham. It wasn’t until 2001 that we finally had our radio

station. Bluewater Radio was incorporated with the assistance of a $25,000 grant and an

Ontario Trillium Grant. The station now has 50 volunteers, 20 on-air personalities and

250 watts of power. Andy stated that the radio station tries to appeal to everyone and

has an open door policy with a programme that appeals to our slightly older

demographic. He offered praise for the full support offered to the radio station by the

Town of Hanover. Music is of course a large part of radio and royalties for songs played

total approximately $3,500 per year.

Andy encouraged individuals to drop in and see for themselves the workings of the radio

station. Volunteers are always welcome. At this time they are looking for help in the

office working the phones. Bluewater Radio can be found at 93.1 FM with a Canadian

content of at least 40%

Following the guest speakers we had our We Share/You Share draw with $106.00 won

by Michelle Napper. Congratulations Michelle!

Guest on February 14th: Ken Duffy, newly retired, was introduced by his wife Mona

Duffy.

Lock your doors

The following article was submitted by one of our members following a home break-in. Last evening Feb 16/18 I went to bed at midnight as I had been watching the Olympic Games. At 1:45 am I awoke to a young woman talking to me at the side of my bed, in my locked home. At first I thought it was a bad dream but quickly realized this was a real person in my bedroom. I asked her as calmly as I could who she was and how she got into my home. She gave me her name and said my door had been unlocked. My door is never unlocked. I got out of bed and “ suggested” we go to the kitchen. Making sure I picked up my cordless phone we did that and I called 911 while we talked. This young woman was higher than a kite and she had attempted a rear door before gaining entrance by reaching inside a mail opening to the inner part of my house and feeling around for a key which was there. Not easy, but she did it and did it quietly. She entered my home, walked past my closed bedroom door, and turned down the bed in the spare bedroom. She took off her boots but before retiring she decided to tell me ( or who ever was in that first bedroom) that she was there, so I would not be frightened in the morning. Likely she was the kindest intruder I have come across, but what if it had not been so, what if she or he had wanted more or in that condition, harmed me. WHAT IF! There is a serious drug problem in this town. An officer informed me of our system, that will put her on the street again shortly, will set a court date a year from now and in the end let her off. The police commended me for my calm manner in handling the situation, said it was not the normal, but then, neither am I, BUT I was anything but calm inside and as I write this I have been up since 1:45 a.m. but I cannot relax enough to close my eyes. Be safe, lock your doors, and hope it does not happen to you
