The halls of HCMS quickly filled with excitement, as students learned author, Mawi Asgedom, was in the building for a surprise visit. Hickory Creek Middle School advisory classes participated in a semester of Mawi Learning, focusing on growth mindset, learning everyone can achieve socially, academically, and emotionally. Students learned not to hit “The Victim Button”, but choose the “Turbo Button” instead for success.

Parents/Guardians are the key to promoting summer reading. Reading is a skill like all others - it requires practice. Let your child's interests, maturity level,

and reading style be the guide to choosing reading material. Please keep in mind that summer is the time to enjoy stories--not struggle with challenging

materials! It is most important that students are reading books that they enjoy everyday. Join our summer reading conversation on twitter and share what you

are reading this summer! Have a safe, relaxing and fun summer! Happy Reading! Thank you for a great year in the library!

Social Studies: As we finish up with Jefferson’s presidency and the War of 1812. Continue to

practice outstanding good citizen character traits…. And remember,

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift.” ~Shifu

ELA: All students finished the year working in novel clubs. Through these clubs students dug into text,

collaborated with their peers and pushed their thinking about text. Keep reading, keep being critical of both

informational and literary text. And above all else, STAY GOLD! Enjoy your summer and be sure to stop by and

tell you ELA teacher all the wonderful things you read over the summer.

Regular Math: Students are finishing up the school year learning about three dimensional shapes.

Honors Math: Students are finishing up the school year learning about functions, the last of our

eigth grade standards.

Science: Students finished the year strong with their unit on weather. We tracked and

analyzed various weather conditions and patterns to predict the weather. The year ended with

an engineering tower challenge which required students to follow certain criteria and

constraints. Have a great summer!

Science:Students had a great time learning about the invasive species, sea lamprey! It was a great way to also introduce symbiotic relationships and getting students to understand the impact species have on each other. We really enjoyed this year’s group and we wish them the best of luck in 7th grade next year!

Social Studies: Students had an awesome year studying our ancient civilizations! Each of these civilizations showcased what truly made them unique as well as the contributions they each made to modern-day society. Students also became quite the experts in world geography topics! As we finish our last quarter of 6th grade, students leave us as confident historians and ready to take on U.S. history as 7th graders!

4th Q Essential Question: What if your world changed in a day?ELA: Students have been enjoying reading multiple texts surrounding the essential question. Students have been participating in many higher-level thinking questions and discussions. It has been a great 4th Q to end 6th grade!!

ELA Honors: Students read the award winning text: Shooting Kabul by N.H. Senzai. Students also participated in an Independent Study where they were required to select a text that correlated with the essential question. There were 20 or more different titles going on in classrooms all at once!

Math: The students are finishing up their sixth grade year studying integers. They will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide positive and negative numbers. This will give all students a sneak peek at the first unit studied in seventh grade.

Sixth grade students, staff, and parents, enjoyed a beautiful day cruising down the Chicago River, learning about the fascinating history of Chicago’s well known skyline. Students learned about the Great Chicago Fire, its devastating effects on the city, and the need to rebuild the city with better materials to avoid any repeat of the tragedy. Many famous architects have a place in the rich architectural history of the city. We topped the day off with lunch at Navy Pier and a little bit of time to explore the attractions. It was a great day for sixth graders!

learning and being exposed to a new

language. We have seen their confidence grow

and know that they will continue to utilize the skills they’ve learned next year in 7th grade Spanish. Have a great

summer!

7th Grade Quarter

The 7th graders finished the quarter strong

learning how to describe themselves and other

people. They have grown so much since the

beginning of the quarter and can use the

vocabulary and grammar skills they have learned to communicate in Spanish.

We look forward to seeing them in 8th grade Spanish

to further their communication skills & have

fun with the language. Have a wonderful summer!

8th Grade- Take FlightStudents investigated Air Traffic Control by learning about the process and then assuming the role of a controller in computer

simulations. After learning how to safely guide airliners on a computer screen, students demonstrated their skills by guiding

blind-folded classmates in an activity that emphasizes the importance of communication skills. Finally, students ended

their year with an engineering design challenge to build gliders and compete with their classmates to produce an aircraft with

superior flight characteristics.Goodbye and good luck, 8th graders!

7th & 6th Grade- Out of the SiloStudents successfully completed the Amber Waves of Grain

unit, where they quantified the impact of agricultural mechanization on American society and created machines that

replicate components of modern day combine harvesters. Then, students completed the culminating unit Feed the World where they evaluated the implications of feeding the world’s

population in 2050 and identify how this global challenge affects the agricultural industry.

FSPThe Hickory Creek Middle School staff and administration would like to thank our wonderful FSP parents for making us all feel so special during Teacher Appreciation Week. We have the most creative parents in our district. What a fun week! Everything was perfect!

How do you serve lunch to the entire HCMS staff during Teacher Appreciation Week? FSP parents have the solution! Call Joey’s!
