HCP Summer Party—A Quacktastic Event!
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the HCP Summer
Party Event on Friday, July 27th! We had a great time rid-
ing/driving the duck boats, blowing our duck whistles, meeting
everyone's family/friends, and socializing at Champions Restau-
rant. We value our department events and are always looking
ahead to the next one, so if you have an idea for a fun outing,
please email Lindsay Craw Camarda.
For more photos please see our internal website.

It was great to have everyone together at the summer party event, and we
were blown away by the attendance. We are hoping we can say the same
on October 30th at 4:30 when Senator Tom Daschle comes to speak for
HCP ‘s 12th Annual Marshall J. Seidman Lecture. This lecture is espe-
cially important to the department because it illustrates to the Quad facul-
ty, staff, and students how fascinating health policy is and the impact of
our department. Please know that everyone is strongly encouraged to at-
tend and show your HCP pride! Here is a look into the life of Senator
Daschle:
Born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, Tom Daschle graduated from South Da-
kota State University in 1969. Upon graduation, he entered the United
States Air Force where he served as an intelligence officer in the Strategic
Air Command until mid-1972.
Following completion of his military service, Senator Daschle served on
the staff of Senator James Abourezk. In 1978, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where
he served for eight years. In 1986, he was elected to the U.S. Senate and eight years later became its Dem-
ocratic Leader. Senator Daschle is one of the longest serving Senate Democratic Leaders in history and
the only one to serve twice as both Majority and Minority Leader. During his tenure, Senator Daschle
navigated the Senate through some of its most historic economic and national security challenges. In
2003, he chronicled some of these experiences in his book, Like No Other Time: The 107th Congress and
the Two Years That Changed America Forever.
Today, Senator Daschle is a Senior Policy Advisor to the law firm of DLA Piper where he provides clients
with strategic advice on public policy issues such as climate change, energy, health care, trade, financial
services and telecommunications. Since leaving the Senate, he has distinguished his expertise in health
care through the publication of Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis and GETTING IT
DONE: How Obama and Congress Finally Broke the Stalemate to Make Way for Health Care Reform.
Daschle has continued to be a leader on climate change and renewable energy, as well as a variety of other
public policy challenges.
In 2007, he joined with former Majority Leaders George Mitchell, Bob Dole, and Howard Baker to create
the Bipartisan Policy Center, an organization dedicated to finding common ground on some of the pressing
public policy challenges of our time. Senator Daschle serves on the board of the Center for American Pro-
gress, acts as the Vice Chair of the National Democratic Institute, and is a member of the Council of For-
eign Relations. He also is a member of the Health Policy and Management Executive Council at the Har-
vard School of Public Health in addition to the Aspen Global Policy Advisory Council for the Health
Worker Migration Initiative. He is a member of the GE Healthymagination Advisory Board; the Children’s
Heartlink International Advisory Board and Co-Chair of the Executive Council on Development at the
Center for Strategic International Studies. In addition, Senator Daschle’s board memberships include the
Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation Board of Trustees; the Blum Foundation; the US Global Leadership
Coalition Advisory Council and the Advisory Committee on the Trust for National Mall.

Welcome to our new HCP faculty & employees!
Jesse Smith is a new Research Assistant for Ronald Kessler. She grew
up on the North Shore of Massachusetts and attended Boston College
earning a BA in Psychology. After graduating in 2011, she worked as a
Health Promotion Specialist for Boston College Health Promotion. She
is hoping to pursue a PhD in Clinical Psychology in the near future. She
became interested in HCP after working in health promotion, and is ex-
cited to join the Kessler Group. Jesse enjoys tennis, healthy cooking,
meditation, singing, and spending time with family.
Bapu Jena is a new Assistant Professor at HCP. He grew up in
Richmond, VA, went to college at MIT, and lived in Chicago
for 8 years where he went to medical school and earned his
PhD in economics. In addition to his new appointment at HCP,
Bapu will be a practicing hospitalist at MGH, where he just
completed his residency in internal medicine. Bapu’s research
interests include medical malpractice, the economics of medi-
cal innovation and cost-effectiveness, geographic variations in
medical care, and insurance benefit design. His hobbies in-
clude playing soccer and tennis and for summer 2012, will also
include planning for a September wedding and furnishing a
new home in Brookline.
Johan Hong is a new Research Assistant for Michael Cher-
new and Bruce Landon. Johan hails from southern California,
and moved to Massachusetts where he received his BA in so-
ciology from Harvard College. After graduating, he spent time
in Rwanda working with an NGO at the intersection of agri-
culture and nutrition. He is excited to be at HCP and to learn
more about, among other things, Patient Centered Medical
Homes and how incentives to primary care physicians shape
practice behavior. While not working or traveling, Johan
enjoys music, soccer, and running.

HCP Family Happenings
Please join us in congratulating Michael and Christina
McWilliams who welcomed a baby girl to their family in
the “wee hours” of the morning on Thursday, June
14th. Their daughter’s name is Isabel Edelen McWilliams
and she was 7lbs 10 oz. at birth, but since then has grown
leaps and bounds. She definitely gets the “Best Baby Hair”
award!
Jean Claude’s daughter, Joann
graduated from the City on the Hill
High School in Boston, and will be
attending Massachusetts College of
the Liberal Arts. Also, seen in the
photo above is Jean-Claude’s wife,
Marie. Some of us at HCP remem-
ber when Joann was first born, so it
is great to watch her achieve these
landmarks.

Nancy Sampson’s daughter Laura Sampson gradu-

Harvard College in May. Laura worked at HCP
during summers since she was in high school and
the last few years in college she worked as a student

tion working as a SAS analyst for Sandro Galea in
the department of Epidemiology at Columbia Uni-
versity. She loves her job and her new life in New
York. She is interested in eventually attending
graduate school in public health or health care poli-
cy so we might see her back here some day!

What is HCP Happenings?
HCP Happenings is an electronic newsletter solely for the Department of Health Care Policy and
is intended to keep HCP employees abreast of important announcements and information about
department events, HCP employees, and campus affairs. Our team of reporters includes: Lindsay
Craw Camarda and Ricardo Espada. If you are unable to commit to the newsletter on a full time
basis, but would still like to submit a news brief or announcement please do so. Also, the commit-
tee would appreciate receiving feedback and will incorporate that feedback into future monthly
issues. If you have comments or an interest in joining the HCP Happenings team, please contact
Lindsay at [email protected].
We would also like to congratulate Emily Cioffi, the daughter of Matthew Cioffi, who
baked the Best Birthday Cake for NBC’s Today Show. The cake was called Whimsical
Garden, and it was a chocolate cake with Italian meringue buttercream frosting and
marshmallow fondant. It was deemed as the winner by Martha Stewart who was im-
pressed by the cake’s creativity, neatness, and flavor. Emily thanks everyone at HCP for
their support, and promises to bake a special cake for an upcoming coffee talk. Here is
