I’ve made it no secret that my family has been involved in the management of private clubs for three generations. My grandfather, a Belgium born hotelier, enjoyed a twenty-fi ve year career in Cincinnati, Ohio in the early years of the last century. My father entered club management on the eve of the Great Depression in 1929, and had a forty-seven year career right here in New York City. My own professional involvement in club management began in 1965, and continues to this day. This heritage has given me the unique opportunity to observe the traditions, trials and challenges of private clubs over almost one hundred years. It’s fascinat-ing to note that so much, and yet so little, has changed over time. The Penn Club is a classic example of this.

Private clubs have long been institutions where like-minded people could congregate for social and celebra-tory purposes. Through the best of times and the worst of times, clubs have represented that safe haven where consistency would prevail and comfort could be found. We’ve all seen this throughout the Penn Club’s short sixteen years. Our Club has maintained a close connec-tion with our members that has become a standard of what a private club should represent. We should all be proud of what we have accomplished, and how we have worked together to define how a truly private social club can incorporate traditional and regulatory value with the fast changing trends of our modern society. While this is happening at a somewhat quicker pace today, it is in fact what private clubs have done since their earliest times. It is worthwhile to occasionally reflect on how our Club has

truly incorporated itself into this rich history.

At no time during the year is the richness of our history and sense of tradition more apparent than during the holidays. As we draw close to Thanksgiving and the December celebrations, our recognition of the Penn Club as an integral part of our lives is once again highlighted. Whether you’re stopping by to meet a friend for drinks by the fireplace, enjoying one of our superb meals in the Main Dining Room or Grill Room, hosting a family or company event, spending the night in one of our well appointed and comfortable rooms, working out in the Palestra, or enjoying the warmth and friendship that prevails at our Thanksgiving Dinner or Members’ Holiday Party, your sense of belonging is at a high point.

This issue of HapPENNings is once again packed with information about the activities the Penn Club has to off er. As you go about planning your calendars around these rich and varied experiences, I hope you will do so with a sense of how our Club continues to expand upon the historical values and traditions that clubs have come to represent. This could never have been accomplished without the vision and support we all share as members, administrators and staff members at one of the world’s truly great private clubs.

As always, my staff and I look forward to welcoming you to the Penn Club. It is truly your home-away-from-home in New York.

As eloquent on the page as he is on the podium, Ford details his ten years of commitment and con- ict in the House, going from a so-called “Kinder-garten Congressman” to challenging Nancy Pelosi for House Democratic Leader. He vividly recalls his trips to Afghanistan and Iraq, and how those a ected his views on foreign policy.Ford o ers a gripping blow-by-blow account of his hard-fought 2006 campaign to represent Ten-nessee in the U.S. Senate—as well as his candid take on the highly controversial television ad by his Republican opponent that likely resulted in his narrow defeat. He shares the crucial advice given to him by Bill Clinton on how to turn a short-term loss into a long-term victory.Always looking forward, Harold Ford believes in the potent mix of hope and practical ity, the power of listening to the average citizen’s concerns, and the urgent need to solve the exis tential problems this country faces. Forgotten Showbiz: New York’s Gilded Age of Church Music Divas—And How Tossing Out the Ladies Ended It All St. Patrick’s Tour, Lecture and Book Signing |

Who should attend? Those who enjoy history, touring and reading.

November 15th, 6:30 p.m. A century ago, New Yorkers in search of musi-cal entertainment had no Internet, recordings or radio—but they had churches. And New Yorkers in search of musical scandal had—church choirs. Far from being sedate, the city’s choral scene in the 1800s was rife with backbiting divas, wealthy “backers,” in ated salaries, and newspaper in-nuendo. And Forgotten Showbiz: New York’s Gilded Age of Church Music Divas—And How Tossing Out the Ladies Ended It All delves into this

excessive and extravagant period, which lasted for nearly half a century until a 1903 Papal proclamation banned those very women from every choir in the world. Even though this order was limited to Catholic churches, the shock waves reverberated throughout churches of every denomination, destroying the system and whipping up an international media circus that centered upon the most famous church in America—St. Patrick’s Cathedral. As well as a lecture and book signing, the program will include a tour of the famed Cathedral by writer Salvatore Basile, a soloist and cantor with the Cathedral Choir who was appointed Cathedral Music Histori-an in 2008. His research led him to write the critically-acclaimed book Fifth Avenue Famous: e Extraordinary Story of Music at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which was published by Fordham University Press in May. Basile has performed in numerous venues on stage and in concert, and has amassed a large collection of period recordings.$15 per member and $30 per guest by November 8th at noon. $25 per member and $40 per guest for late reservations.

Book Group LuncheonWho should attend? Those interested in reading and discussing what they read.

Please join us over a catered lunch as Isabel Katzin leads discussion. Isabel holds a Master’s Degree and has studied in the US, Paris and Israel. Formerly an English and French teacher, she has been a professional book group discussion leader for over 18 years and currently leads 28 groups.

Old Filth and e Man in the Wooden Hat |by Jane GardamMonday, November 29th, 12:00 noon. is month we will be reading Old Filth ( rst) and e Man in the Wooden Hat (second) by Jane Gardam. Old Filth has been acclaimed as Jane Gardam’s masterpiece, a book where life and art merge. And now that beautiful, haunting novel has been joined by a companion that also bursts with humor and wisdom: e Man in the Wooden Hat.Old Filth was Eddie’s story. The Man in the Wooden Hat is the history of his marriage told from the perspective of his wife, Betty, a character as vivid and enchanting as Filth himself. ey met in Hong Kong after the war. Betty had spent the duration in a Japanese internment camp.

Filth was already a successful barrister, handsome, fast becoming rich, in need of a wife but unaccustomed to romance. A perfect English couple of the late 1940s!As a portrait of a marriage, with all the bittersweet secrets and surpris-ing ful llment of the 50-year union of two remarkable people, the novel is a triumph. e Man in the Wooden Hat is ction of a very high order from a great novelist working at the pinnacle of her considerable power. It will be read and loved and recommended by all the many thousands of readers who found its predecessor, Old Filth, so compel-ling and so thoroughly satisfying.$49 plus tax and service charge per member and $54 plus tax and service charge per guest by November 22nd at noon, $54 plus tax and service charge per member and $59 plus tax and service charge per guest for late reserva-tions. Museum Tour: Pierpont Morgan Library | Friday, November 19th, 6:00 p.m. A complex of buildings in the heart of New York City, The Morgan Library & Mu-seum began as the private library of fi nancier Pierpont Morgan (1837–1913), one of the preeminent collectors and cultural benefactors in the United States. As early as 1890 Morgan had begun to assemble a collection of illuminated, literary, and historical manuscripts, early printed books, and old master drawings and prints. Mr. Morgan’s library, as it was known in his lifetime, was built between 1902 and 1906 adjacent to his New York residence at Madison Avenue and 36th Street. Designed by Charles McKim of the architectural fi rm McKim, Mead & White, the library was intended as something more than a repository of rare materials. Majestic in appearance yet intimate in scale, the structure was to refl ect the nature and stature of its holdings. The result was an Italian Renaissance-style palazzo with three magnifi cent rooms epitomizing America’s Age of Elegance.
