Automating the library in the 1980s was certainly a process. Florence was the proud recipient of the hospital’s first computer and had to attend a full week-long training class at Dartmouth College to learn how to use MEDLINE.

A SERLINE-based Union List of Serials for Basic Health Sciences Libraries: A Detailed ProtocolBY CHRISTINE L. BELL, Director of Library Services, Newton-Wellesley Hospital
Much of the formal cooperation between basichealth sciences libraries in Massachusetts wasthrough the state's strong consortia network. Toimprove and foster this cooperation, the initialMaHSLiN union list had as its foundation thejournal holdings of Massachusetts's sixestablished health-related consortia.

Something from the latest romance novel to hit the bookstores? How about the 1999 annual meeting held at the Sheraton Lexington Inn this past April! This year's conference committee, ably chaired by Anita Loscalzo, Vice-President/President-Elect, planned for just about every contingency and thought of almost every detail, except the power outage that
occurred at 3:30am the morning of the meeting.

Grant from Massachusetts Medical Society Will Upgrade Hospital Library ComputersInformation Today; Mar1992, Vol. 9 Issue 3, p14
A grant of $50,000 from MMS will be distributed among twelve hospital medical libraries. MMS awarded the grant check to MaHSLiN which is administering to provide computer workstations for physician use and training, and upgrade existing equipment, and purchase software such as BRS Colleague and Grateful Med.
Every December the Mahslin Executive Board meets with consortia chairs and resource library directors for an opportunity to share information and exchange ideas. Thus, Board members get a better idea of what's going on "out there" and invited guests have a chance to gather information about what's going on in Mahslin that they can, in turn, pass along to their colleagues. This year the meeting was held on December 16, 1999 immediately following the regular Board meeting.

A small group of MAHSLIN members is now at work on a Home Page for MAHSLIN in a format that will mirror Web pages of other, similar organizations. The Executive Board of MAHSLIN has approved that the initial contents of the Home Page will include a description of MAHSLIN, its mission statement, a list of Executive Board Members and Committee Chairs with their e-mail addresses, membership, annual meeting, continuing education, and Union List purchase information.

It is with great sadness that we recordthe passing of one of the founders of MAHSLIN, Paul Vaiginas, in January of this year. Paul started his medical library career at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in 1970, moving on to the Deaconess Hospital in 1978. When Deaconess Hospital merged with Beth Israel in 1996, Paul helped to ease the consolidation of the two libraries and their perspective staffs with great humor and humanity. He retired from the BI Deaconess Medical Center in 2003.

An Appreciation of our Members
• In preparing this brief history, it became apparent that many of the people who were active in the early days of the organization continued to contribute their time and talents for many years. While not at all an inclusive list, some of the notables are Alison Clapp, Chris Bell, Florence Mercer, Anita Loscalzo, Sydney Fingold, Jay Daly, Denise Corless, Debbie Almquist, Teri Niland, Jeannie vander Pyl, Gale Cogan, Cara Marcus, Elaine Alligood, Margo Coletti, and the list goes on. And in the last decade, new leaders have stepped up – Brandy King, Sally Gore, Nathan Norris, Jane Ichord, Dan McCloskey, and so many others who will define the direction of knowledge management in years to come – Melinda Marchand, MAHSLIN Archives Chair
