More from the AGM for the financial year July 2016 - June

2017 held in April 2018

Brenda Leek made Life Member Brenda began presenting 25 years ago and has been sick and off air for a number of months. Many listeners to her Anything Goes and Down Memory Lane shows have sent her get well wishes and cards. In the early days of life at Alma Street, the station had little in furniture. Brenda and husband Ron provided it. Brenda also served on the programming committee of the station for several years. In recent years Brenda and Ron organised various car shows around Hobart, with substantial donations given to Hobart FM. Brenda was also a prize donor for the Station's Monthly Member Prize draws over many years. Brenda Leek has given a large part of her life serving Hobart FM and is fully deserving of Life Membership, said Craig Cracknell is his citation. Upcoming Management Committee Meetings all at 6pm Wednesday 16th May Wednesday 20th June Wednesday 18th July

Husband Ron Leek (left) accepts his wife’s Life Membership plaque from Craig Cracknell at the AGM.

We not only broadcast throughout our community, we also aim to involve the community in the running of the station.

During July and August 2017, we welcomed Anthony Barrett as a work placement student. He already hosts a program on fellow community station Tasmen FM (Monday nights from 7pm on 97.7FM). He is also an active member of Sorell on Stage behind the scenes.

Anthony attends Hobart TAFE and whilst at Hobart FM he was involved in some office duties and studio operation. He researched, prepared, edited and recorded Community Service Announcements, and was involved in the production of sponsorship announcements.

Anthony got into radio because he loves music, especially musicals, and the interaction with listeners. He would like to pursue a career as either a television or radio newsreader. We wish Anthony all the best in his career ambition.

Reg Watson to go statewide Reg Watson’s short historical recorded segments will soon be heard in the north of the State. Community radio station City Park Radio in Launceston has arranged with Reg to broadcast them. Each piece of Tasmanian history runs between one and 3 minutes and is ideal for playing between music tracks or as part of magazine programs. Well done Reg and to producer/editor Craig Cracknell.

Ria Walter profile

When she left school here in Hobart she headed to the ABC to talk to them about a job in radio but her career took her down a different path. Sub-consciously she thinks I have always wanted to get back to radio. Seven years ago she just rang the station, did the training course with Jim Parish and as the course ended was offered a Saturday night spot. And the rest is history. I began with a half our session on s Saturday night in January 2012. My mentor was Phil Tyson who was just amazing, quite brilliant and mentored me for some months. I progressed to a two hour show from 8 to 10 o’clock at night, and then I started doing Thursdays and 12 noon to 1.30pm, and then last year I moved to Wednesdays noon to 2pm. I am the youngest of six children. My father was a carpenter who built our family home in South Hobart with all the features of the day. And my mother was a dress maker. The house was always full of music of the 1950s as was every house in that time. Dad loved jazz and light classical. Then there were the nights when we were taught waltzes and foxtrots up and down the kitchen to music on the record player. There was the Irish music with Jimmy Stand and his band, Les Black lays the organ (?), and all that stuff. Certainly easy listening. Mum and Dad did lots of entertaining so there was always music, lots of fun and laughter around. I suppose that’s behind what I play on air. I attribute my love of all things from the 50s and 60s from the colours, fabrics and styles to the music of my upbringing. I didn’t realise I could paint until about 8 years ago when a friend told me it would change my life. I said that I did not have an artistic bone in my body. At school I drew wonky bowls of fruit and that was it. Ultimately, I did an Art for Absolute Beginners at Adult Ed and from the very first day I realised that I

can do this. Cutting a long story short, I have had my own exhibition, have sold lots of pieces over the years, exhibited jointly with other artists and received commissions. My medium is acrylic paint and it is all abstract. The pieces are often black and white. I quite like op art, visual illusions, and bright colours. After school I did secretarial college, worked in an office for a couple of years and found it all very tedious so I did the Hotel Management course at Drysdale. That led me to a job as a cook for about 4 years, but after a while that also palled. So I did a course in Beauty Therapy at Hobart Technical College. That’s where I have earned my living for 33 years now, and most of those working for myself. Many confidences and tears have been shared by my clients over the years, much like I gather happens with hairdressers. You are just a sounding board and people want to get things off their chest. They leave my salon with a spring in their step, their shoulders a bit straighter and a smile on their face. Hear Ria in her fortnightly show Ria’s Retro on alternate Wednesdays between 12 noon and 2pm.

Welcome to some of our new presenters We welcome Joy Jones back to the microphone after an extended break. A warm welcome to new presenters RobynGuy, Mandy Skillen, David Mitchell and Kenny White. We look forward to many hours of great listening. We congratulate Amanda Sims on reaching 25 years service at Hobart FM. She presents the World Music Program on Saturday afternoons.

On Sunday 22nd April the sun shone on a wonderful Multicultural Language Day organised by Hobart FM Spanish presenter, Sonia Parra. This is the forth year she has run the event. A plethora of music, talks, and activities easily filled in the time between 10 and 1pm on the lawns and inside Mathers House in Hobart. Hobart FM representative Joy Jones handed out newsletters and Helen Lindsay interviewed performers, onlookers and display organisers. Management committee members Roger Joseph (secretary) and Kaye Payne also attended. It was good to see how well attended the event was by a mixture of locals and multicultural people, happily exchanging ideas, cultures and especially laughter. There was music and dance from dances and music from Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, China, Nepal, India and Africa plus children’s stories and competitions in different languages. With the assistance of Greg Ransley, sound engineer for the event, we have recordings of all the stage performances. I conducted interviews with a wide range of people for transmission as part of my Tuesday night (6pm to 8pm) Tassie Experiences program as soon as possible.

Our first Trivia Quiz held on Sunday 8th April added about $500 to the station coffers. There were 4 tables all vying to be show the amount of trivia running around in their brains. There was a silent auction and rounds on music, (written by Ian Crook) Antarctica (written by Brett Gogoll), tourism, flags (of all the multicultural shows on our station) proverbs and pot luck. There was another round in which all the answers were fruit (e.g. a vehicle that doesn't work? Lemon.). Each table was given some playdough to make the station logo for extra points. Brett Gogoll, The Money Man aka Fines Collector had fun with the crazy ideas for teams to bribe their way to success, including the most outrageous dress up. Each team had to select a representative to dress as Meghan Markle. Unabashed, Peter Davey, Terry Mather and Phil Williams (photo above) were dressed by their teams from a basket of goodies supplied by Helen. Brett Gogoll (far right) was “bought” by a team to dress up for them. The winning table organised by Kaye Payne included Phil and Diane Williams, Tracy McKinless, David and Carol Carr, and, says Kaye, “another lady we dragged onto our table but I can’t remember her name.” They each took home a bottle of Brookfield Pinot Noir. A big votes of thanks go to quiz mistress Helen Lindsay, who put the afternoon together, Brett Gogoll for revving everyone up and to Ian Crook who kept track of all the points won and lost during the afternoon. There were only a few points between the first and last table. With only a few points between the first and last teams, it was an afternoon full of laughs.

Meghan Markle eat your heart out! or… a not so trivial Sunday arvo

There is much that goes on around the station that flies under the radar. Jim Parish has been busy rectifying a few problems that have been plaguing the station for some time. In studio A a cover has been fitted over the three computers to reduce the amount of noise. CD4 has had an internal control cable replaced. This hopefully will alleviate CDs stopping mid track. CD players will often reject CDs that may be damaged, or even have finger prints on them. Please use the fault book in studio A if you experience problems with station equipment. In studio B, the turntable has had a cover placed over it to prevent damage to the turntable, and also to give presenters more useable space. A USB socket has also been fitted to the

desk top to enable easy access to the ZARA PC. And recently ZARA was attacked by ransomware. This affected ZARA files. Thanks to many hours of work by Jim, the files were restored, and backed up. Some individual presenter Ids were not recovered and will need to be re-recorded. Apologies for this. And many thanks to Barry 'Spook' Young for his technical assistance during February, March and April while Jim Parish was overseas. We are fortunate in having the services of a great volunteer technical staff. Thanks to Tim Kingston for ensuring that Dr James Wright, On This Day and Graham Ross gardening segments are put into the ZARA software for presenters to use.

An Outside Broadcast from Moonah Arts Centre on 4th May 2018 Hobart FM was very excited to be a part of the “Hear Our Voices Multicultural Women’s Gathering” which is in its 5th year. It has been a collaborative initiative between Glenorchy City Council and services such as the Migrant Resource Centre, Catholic Care, Tasmanian Health Service, Multicultural Council of Tasmania, Red Cross, Hobart Women’s Shelter, Hobart Women’s Health in addition to community volunteers and a range of other organisations since 2014. One of the initial aims of the gathering is to help support women to develop their own women’s groups and for them to develop confidence to advocate on behalf of women in their communities. The Gatherings provide opportunities for women to talk about important issues (such as employment, racism, understanding the culture of young people in a new country), gain information, discuss issues, build leadership skills and develop friendships and connections in the community. .

Hear our Voices

Multi-Cultural Women’s

Gathering

It is wonderful to see the growth and confidence in many who attend and who are now part of planning the forum. The gatherings also give service providers opportunities to learn and improve how best to present their information to multicultural communities. These gatherings offer women a good opportunity to express themselves and develop language skills. After some technical hitches we went to air (40mins late) and managed to chat with three of our very own female multi-cultural presenters, Jelena Cupac, Karina Ceron and Sonia Parra; and several of the women attending the event and the organiser Hirut Seboka. Many thanks go to Helen Lindsay, Ria Walter, Paul Felt and a special BIG thanks to Jim Parish; what a treasure he is. We had difficulties with getting live to air and Jim stayed calm and sorted it out. We certainly look forward to being a part of this event next year.

$130 double passes won by members

When the promoter of the Eva Cassidy tribute concert in April at the Theatre Royal offered us 4 double passes as part of his sponsorship package, we were delighted to offer these on air to members in the days before the show.

Well done to our winners:

Tracey Williams Helen Pregnell Les Drelich Robyn Guy

A couple of callers found out that their memberships had lapsed, so we mailed them renewal forms as they requested.

The Sponsorship Sub-Committee aims to have more of these high value member benefits in the future.

Program Guide

This is a screen grab of our Program Guide as it appeared on our web site in early May. With presenters taking Winter vacation breaks and a few shows that alternate every fortnight, the guide is always a work in progress.
