Tuesday, June 27, 2010 saw the Rotary Club of Bendigo celebrate our 85 th anniversary and President Jack Gallagher hosted over 90 people at a special evening meeting at the Bendigo Club to celebrate the event. With 43 members, 25 visiting Rotarians and 25 partners and guests there was plenty of fellowship and lots of catching up amongst visitors from the many clubs belonging to the family tree of the Rotary Club of Bendigo. When special guest Sue Ebery was introduced she presented an extensive overview of her new publication, an extensive, warts and all biography of Kenneth Myer. Eldest son of Sydney Myer, who started the famous emporium here in Bendigo all those years ago, Ken set up the Myer foundation whose legacy keeps the younger generations of the Myer dynasty busy just giving money away. Ken is credited with being before his time with a proposition to establish stronger relationships with Japan, Asia and China in trade relationships. He was also instrumental in establishing Chadstone Shopping Centre, building the Arts and Entertainment Centre, bringing parking meters to Australia amongst other things. A long term sufferer of depression it was common for his chauffer to warn the staff at the Myer Emporium of his mood and word would pass around the entire store within minutes of his arrival. Sue signed several copies of her books on Ken Myer and Weary Dunlop after the meeting. Of course no birthday party would be complete without a cake. After thanking our guest speaker President Jack had PP Warren Cambridge leading us all in a loud rendition of ‘that’ song and as it happens Jack Rowe was there celebrating his 83 rd birthday so there was none better to blow out the candles. Congratulations to all, a great night and most members and guests didn’t rush off at the conclusion of the meeting but took the opportunity for more fellowship. Cheers to all, Noel Hobley For President Jack Gallagher. No 4168 – Tuesday 27th July 2010 – A002977L Happy Birthday to us, Happy Birthday to us …. Happy Birthday to us, Happy Birthday to us ….
