ALCA Board ReportHello Neighbours!

There has been an amazing outpouring of support for the people affected by the wildfires in Alberta

and it’s times like these that remind us how much we sometimes depend on the kindness of strangers, family and friends. I know we will all continue to help in any way we can and that we are all grateful that community spirit is alive and well in Canada.

The ALCA would like to thank Mary Clohessey for her many years served on the board of directors in many different roles. Her dedication to the community has been invaluable and we wish her all the best.

Little Library: Thank you to the person who donated books about flowers to the little library and included some seeds for planting. The recipient reported that she has planted the seeds and is grateful for such a nice surprise!

Crime & Safety: As the weather gets warm crime tends to increase. Please remember to lock your doors and keep valuables out of sight as most thefts occur when access is easy and items are in sight. Calgary Police Service requests that we all keep our bottles out of the recycling. This will help to lessen the number of non-residents hanging around our residential areas and possibly causing problems. If you need someone to pick up your bottles and cans please call us at 403-455-2520 and we will arrange to have them donated to charity.

Planning and Development: You have probably noticed that fences have gone up and construction work being undertaken at Robert Thirsk High school. These pathway upgrades are being installed to improve safety and circulation on site. They will extend behind the

ARBOUR LAKE REFLECTIONS: OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE ARBOUR LAKE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION JUNE 2016 7

In Our CommunityCouncillor ReportOver the past few months, I’ve been consulting with

the residents of Ward 2 on their priorities for our community and our city. Ward 2 residents are almost unanimous in their opposition to increased property taxes. That is why on April 25, 2016, I voted against the 6.1% increase to property taxes, which was passed by council.

The 6.1% property tax increase was largely derived from the increased provincial education portion of property taxes. What is even more concerning is the fact that the 6.1% property tax increase does not take into account the new carbon tax that is being implemented by the provincial government. This carbon tax will not only tax each and every Albertan individually, but it will also be applied to our public transit system and almost every aspect of The City of Calgary’s operations. This will significantly impact property tax rates in future years. The City of Calgary will need to continue doing its part by looking at every aspect of spending to see what can be done to reduce the tax burden on Calgarians. However, I will admit that this task will be increasingly difficult due to the higher taxes being imposed on The City by the provincial government.

As always, please feel free to share your opinions with me on this issue or any other via “Contact Councillor” at www.joemagliocca.ca.

Are You Willing to Suck? When it comes to what you think you want to do

and what you will actually do to achieve it comes down to how willing you are to risk doing it badly until you can master it.

When people come to me to help them achieve a goal, this is the defining question; Are you first willing to suck?

Remember as a child becoming borderline obsessed with mastering something? Maybe you spent hours on your driveway shooting baskets, or out on the ice doing layback spirals. It was no big deal to latch onto something and do it over and over again. We didn’t get discouraged when we missed or fell, we just got up and did it again and again. As adults we somehow picked up the notion that we must acquire skills without fumbling, struggling and possibly looking bad in the process. Unfortunately, many people have not pursued their desires because they weren’t willing to fumble, struggle, possibly fail and start again. The following things I have willingly and gladly sucked at; guitar and piano, playing guitar or piano in public. Singing, yoga, coaching, writing, public speaking, business administration, computer programs, android phones and social media. Just to name a few.

I may not have ‘mastered’ each of these things, but I have certainly become competent at them. While I was learning to be competent at each and every one of these things, I was willing to endure the process. Even when I felt awkwardly self-conscious and even downright painfully inept, something inside of me kept wanting to keep trying (after crying in frustration and vowing to quit, of course). I am now a piano and guitar teacher who regularly hosts and performs at recitals. I’m a member of an all female a cappella group and we do gigs! I truly enjoy a daily yoga practice. I have a

coaching business that involves public speaking, writing, business administration. I created my own website with my computer and have learned to communicate creatively with my friends and a social network using my complicated phone!

I also didn’t start out to ‘become’ a teacher, a coach, a business owner, I just knew I wanted to play music and sing. I loved studying human behaviour and unlocking potential. I kept learning one thing, then another, then another on my computer and my phone. Which leads me to believe that we are wired, somehow, to become what we’re meant to by following that which we find fascinating enough to obsess over.

There is a child-like openness that happens when you are on to something that is right for you. The learning process becomes just as engaging as the end result. You don’t even have to know the end goal, because lots of times when you are following that willingness to suck, it leads you to surprising places.

Congratulations – you’ve earned your degree or diploma! Now is the

perfect time to take a few minutes to review this five-step post-grad tutorial that will help you get a solid financial start on your new life.

1. Manage your student loan. For the first six months after graduation, you don’t actually have to make a payment but interest will accrue. Find out what your payment will be and include it in your budget. More is better but make at least the minimum payment each month. If you are unable to make payments, contact the loan provider right away.

If you have a Canada Student loan, you may qualify for the Repayment Assistance Plan. If yours is a bank loan, you may be able to negotiate temporarily lowered payments.

2. Save for tomorrow with an RRSP. Consider putting the power of compounding to work for you by contributing to investments held in a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) because investing even a small amount each month can build considerable wealth over the years. Plus contributions to RRSPs are deductible from your taxable income for each year in which contributions are claimed. Another RRSP plus: If you’re thinking about buying a home in the future, the federal Home Buyer’s Plan allows eligible individuals to withdraw up to $25,000 for a home purchase tax-free from their RRSP.

3. Save smart with a TFSA. Start a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). It complements your RRSP because investments held in a TFSA grow tax-free. You can currently contribute up to $5,500 in a TFSA each year tax-free and get your money back out at any time, for any purpose, tax-free. However, there is no reduction to your taxable income for TFSA contributions.

4. Avoid high credit card debt. Credit card interest rates can be 20% or more so limit their use. Try to pay the balance in full each month, and pay on time to avoid late fees and additional interest charges.

5. Develop a budget – and stick to it. Include all unavoidable expenses such

as rent and utilities and be mindful of discretionary expenses, such as

travel, that you can control.

By the way, now is also the perfect time to incorporate these five first financial steps into an overall financial plan that will help you meet your personal objectives. Your professional advisor can

facilitate your financial success by developing a financial plan for

your unique situation.

In Our CityBBQ Season is upon us!Your Calgary Fire Department wants you to grill safely!• Propane, natural gas & charcoal BBQ’s

should only be used outdoors. • The grill should be placed

well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches

• Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area

• Keep your BBQ clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below to reduce the risk of flash fires

• Never leave your grill unattended.

Natural Gas/Propane Grills• Always make sure the lid on your gas

grill is open before lighting it.• Check hoses for leaks at the start of BBQ season by

applying a light soapy water solution to the hose, a gas leak will release bubbles

• If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill, then get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again.

• If you smell gas while cooking and cannot safely turn off the gas, then immediately get away from the grill and call the Fire Department, DO NOT move the grill. If the flame goes out, turn off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it.

Charcoal Grills• The grill should be placed well away from the

home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches

• If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid.• Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable

liquids to a fire OR while hot coals are present.• Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and

away from heat sources• There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use

fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.• When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely

cool before disposing in a metal container.

Calgary Fire Department

Backyard Play SafetyWith summer approaching, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) would like to encourage parents and caregivers to ensure their backyard play areas are made safe for children. Although direct supervision is the best method to reduce the chance of injury, ensure your play equipment in your yard is in good repair and is suitable for the age and skill of the children using it. Check play equipment often; replace or repair any worn or broken parts. Set up play equipment over top a 9 inch layer of shock-absorbing material such as sand, wood chips, or pea gravel which extends 6 feet out in all directions from the play area.

Water hazards• Drowning contributes to unintentional injury-related

death among children ages one to four;• Children can drown in just a few centimetres of water if it

covers their mouth and nose; • Ensure all backyard swimming pools are fenced. The

fence must be at least 1.8 metres(*) high and have a self-latching, self-closing, lockable gate.

(*Alberta Building Code)

Lawn and garden tools• Keep young children away from outdoor power

equipment; • Serious burns may result from touching hot engine

surfaces;• Ensure that all sharp tools, fuel, chemicals, and other

hazardous substances are stored in a secure, locked area. A simple latch may not be sufficient.

Insect bites and stings• Minimize the risk of attracting insects by not wearing

strong perfumes or scented lotions;• Avoid wearing brightly coloured clothing outdoors;• Consider destroying or relocating hives and nests

situated near your home;• To avoid injury through inadvertently stepping on a

stinging insect always wear footwear outdoors;• If your child has received an ‘EpiPen, Junior’

prescription from your physician (for anaphylactic reactions only) ensure they understand when and how to use it;

• If your child experiences a severe reaction to an insect sting, or other environmental cause, seek medical attention, or call 9-1-1.

#GetMovingYYC An Initiative Aimed, at Getting More Calgarians, More Active, More Often.

Recent research reveals that only 15 per cent of adults meet the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines (Conference Board of Canada, 2015) while only nine per cent of children and youth meet the recommendations for daily activity targets (ParticipACTION, 2015). This has serious implications for individual and community health and well-being. Sedentary lifestyles and behaviours pose significant risks and a collective approach to curbing them is required.

In 2015 Calgary Recreation led an initiative to help turn the curve on sedentary behaviour and lifestyles in Calgary. #GetMovingYYC is an awareness-raising campaign and a series of community based initiatives to get more Calgarians, more active, more often. Working with the community, #GetMovingYYC invites Calgarians to ‘join the movement’ by committing to move more every day.

Join us in June on the #GetMovingYYC journey!Over the weekend of June 18 & 19, 2016 The City of Calgary is challenging community partners and members to lead a walk in their respective communities. It doesn’t need to be elaborate and could even be built into other celebrations like Father’s Day. All we ask is that the walk is accessible, family friendly, has a defined start time and location and it is led. If you are interested in leading a walk in your community please contact your community association.

Why should you walk? Increasing physical activity through walking is associated with many health benefits including: • Reducing the risk of coronary heart disease • Lowering blood pressure

In Our City• Reducing high cholesterol • Reducing body fat• Enhancing mental wellbeing, reduce stress • Increasing bone density • Reducing the risk of cancer of the colon• Helping to control body weight • Supports proper posture • Helping osteoarthritis • Helping to increase flexibility and co-ordination

To join the #GetMovingYYC movement, please visit http://www.calgary.ca/CSPS/Recreation/Pages/getmoving.aspx and use the #GetMovingYYC hashtag whenever you’re physically active in our city.

My Dad Works HereConstruction Zone Safety

Imagine sitting in your cubicle with cars whizzing by

dangerously close to your work space and so fast that you can feel the tailwind. Well, that’s just what many City employees experience every day when they are out working in the field.

“The only protection that we have are those signs and the cones. It’s all that separates our workers and the traffic,” says Marco Nicoletti, Roads Foreman. The “My Dad Works Here” Construction Zone Safety campaign is a joint initiative with Roads and Water Services, spotlighting the kids of employees working in high traffic construction areas.

It isn’t always easy to maintain your patience when you’re delayed in traffic because of road or utility work, but for the safety of the workers doing their job and for your safety too, it’s important to slow down, stay alert and obey all posted signs.

So, keep an eye out for signs popping up in construction zones in late May.
