“The cityscape depicts and combines nature, music, and architecture in a context to memorialize the hospital's rich history, memories, and meaning.”

“The mural’s title relates to the personal stories and historical references of the hospital and East Harlem,” said De Carvalho. “It incorporates images of contiguous tenement building which are reminiscent of an earlier time, when people living in those six-story buildings knew and looked after each other in the neighborhood. It is also based on photographs I took while walking in around the hospital.”“Ultimately,” she added, “the mural is a celebration of the lives of East Harlem’s diverse community and is dedicated to the families, friends, and heroes who work at Metropolitan.”The mural is located on the outside of the hospital’s OPD building, at the corner of Second Avenue and 97th Street.Community murals are provided by the Arts in Medicine program at NYC Health + Hospitals, with the support of the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund and the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City.

Metropolitan recently unveiled Cycles of Life, a new community mural created by artist Priscila De Carvalho, and painted in collaboration with patients, staff and community members. According to the artist, the colorful mural conveys the history of the neighborhood, hospital patients, staff and community members through vivid bright colors and historical research.

Everyone is invited to our monthly support group: stroke survivors, families, caretakers, and friends. Get practical advice. Gain a sense of control and reduce anxiety. Improve coping skills. The group meets from 12-1 PM on the third Thursday of every month, in Room 304,

main building. The next meeting is December 19. Metropolitan’s stroke team has received the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for 2017, 2018, and 2019 for improving quality of care and patient outcomes for stroke patients. Staff and volunteers shared the spirit of the season by providing full Thanksgiving dinners, including turkeys, trimmings, and desserts to almost 100 patients and their families. The event was sponsored by the Metropolitan Hospital Auxiliary.

Metropolitan, in partnership with Manhattan Borough

President Gale Brewer, will host an opioid overdose education and Narcan training on Friday, December 13, from 12 noon to 2 PM, in the 6th floor auditorium. Attendees will receive free rescue kits and be certified as opioid overdose responder after completing training provided by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Metropolitan is partnering with Buy Local East Harlem for a series of holiday pop-up markets in the hospital’s main lobby. A select group of East Harlem-based merchants have been invited to showcase their products on two consecutive Fridays, December 6 and 13, from 11 AM to 2 PM. Stop by for live music, delicious desserts and great gift ideas.

“El paisaje urbano representa y combina la naturaleza, la música y la arquitectura en un contexto para conmemorar la rica historia, recuerdos y significado del hospital".

"El título del mural se relaciona con las historias personales y las referencias históricas del hospital y El Barrio“, dijo De Carvalho. “Incorpora imágenes de viviendas contiguas que recuerdan a una época anterior, cuando las personas que vivían en esos edificios de seis pisos se conocían y se cuidaban en el vecindario. También se basa en fotografías que tomé mientras caminaba por el hospital ".“Al final“, agregó, "el mural es una celebración de la vida de la comunidad diversa de El Barrio y está dedicado a las familias, amigos y héroes que trabajan en Metropolitan".El mural está ubicado en el exterior del hospital, en la esquina de la Segunda Avenida y la calle 97.Los murales comunitarios son provistos por el programa Arts in Medicine en NYC Health + Hospitals, con el apoyo del Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund y el Fondo del alcalde para avanzar en la Ciudad de Nueva York.

Metropolitan, en asociación con la Presidenta del Condado de Manhattan, Gale

Brewer, organizará una evento educativo sobre sobredosis de opioides y capacitación de Narcan el viernes 13 de diciembre, de 12 del mediodía a 2 de la tarde, en el auditorio del sexto piso. Los participantes recibirán kits de rescate gratuitos y serán certificados como respondedores de sobredosis de opioides después de completar la capacitación proporcionada por el Departamento de Salud.
