SCRIPTURE INSIGHTS FOR THE TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “I long to depart this life and be with Christ,” says Paul in the Second Reading. What do these words say to us about the depth, the faith, the prayer of the man who uttered them? Paul is not speaking out of depression, even though he is imprisoned at the time he writes this (Philippians 1:7, 17). His words come from a deep desire within his heart and a strong conviction of faith. “For to me life is Christ, and death is gain.” As a Pharisee (Philippians 3:5), Paul would have believed in the resurrection of the dead even prior to his conversation to Christ (Acts 23:6). But it is not just resurrected life that Paul longs for: it is to be with Christ in the fullness of his glory. Not only had the risen Christ appeared to him at his conversion, but Paul had even glimpsed the glory of paradise in some type of mystical prayer experience, as described in 2 Corinthians 12:1-4. Paul’s personal experience of Christ rooted him firmly in Christ. “I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8). One could even say that Paul lived and breathed Christ: “I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). What a model for us to ponder! But how does one attain such Christ-centeredness? To be sure, Paul’s personal experience of Jesus was gift and grace. But it is also true that we can open ourselves to grace in various ways—by being faithful to prayer, reading scripture, fasting, meditating on the sacred, and other acts of devotion which help to cultivate a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus. Certainly Paul was a man of prayer and devotion. Let us cultivate such practices so that we too may be open to the graces, the nearness of Christ.

COME BACK TO CHURCH Have you started to come back to Church yet since Covid-19? Some have and some have not. We just want to reassure you that we are doing everything we can to keep everyone safe. The diocesan guidelines requires:

Everyone wear a mask -The priest and Lector are not required to wear a mask while in the sanctuary. Try to keep about 6 feet between you and the person or family next to, in front of, or behind you. Ministers of Hospitality are at each Mass to remind people to socially distance if they are too close. People are to receive Communion in their hand, and then lower their mask to put it in their mouth. The Church, Hall or meeting rooms are sanitized after each use. The priest, deacon and Extraordinary Minister are to wear masks when distributing Communion.

We have sanitizer right next to the Communion station in case we make contact with you.

If you are still truly afraid to go out of your house, the bishop’s dispensation still applies and you are encouraged to watch Mass on line or on the TV. If you are ready to start getting back to the new normal, we encourage you to come to one of regular weekend Masses. Please also consider that you could come to daily Mass, as there are fewer people than at our Weekend Masses. This give you the chance to receive Communion if you have not been receiving it. Please always check the daily Mass schedule in the bulletin as it occasionally changes. Please join the 2020 Public Square Rosary Crusade. Our nation is in great need of public prayer, repentance & conversion. We ask God to save America through the Rosary of His Most Holy Mother. Please join us in praying for our nation on October 10, 2020 at 12:00 Noon. The local Public Square Rosary Rally will take place at St. Matthew’s, Saltsburg. Please contact Elvia Eckenrode at 724-639-9410 for more information. Annual Pro-Life Prayer Breakfast—via ZOOM, Saturday, October 3, 2020 from 10:30 AM to 12:00 noon. Keynote speaker, Judy Townsend, Parent Care Coordinator of Be Not Afraid. Please register with a current email address so we can forward you the ZOOM invite .
