Item 231-02 – House of Commons FREE – c1884, House of Commons free franked wrapper with rimless HofC Free Canada Davis CH-4 or CS HC-16 to St. Lambert Quebec. The wrapper is signed by Francois Bechard (MP for Iberville and St. John and Senator for De Lorimier). Bechard was a Quebec farmer and political figure. He was born in Mount Johnson LC. He served as a major in the local militia and was mayor of Saint-Grégoire. Rare postmark and rare signature. $500.00


Item 231-03 – Isle Verte LC Postmaster free – 1839, Postmaster free franked folded cover to Quebec. Signed by Louis Bertrand, PM (1831-1868). Bertrand was the Isle Verte general merchant and major landowner. He was the owner of the mill, the sawmill, the dock and numerous boats. He represented Rimouski in the House of Assembly of LC from 1832 to 1838 and was elected as the first mayor of L'Isle-Verte in 1845. $150.00

Item 231-04 – Contrecoeur CE – 1866, stampless cover from Contrecoeur CE (Vercheres county) paid 5 to Montreal. Cover slightly reduced at top. A very scarce office. $75.00 SOLD


Item 231-05 – Buckingham CE (Papineau) – 1848, stampless folded family letter from Buckingham CE (Papineau county) 7d collect to Perth UC. Bytown and Smiths Falls transit b/s. The letter is from Mrs Wilson to her sister Mrs Thompson. Nice backstamps. $60.00 SOLD


Item 231-06 – Manningville LC (Huntingdon) – 1867, stampless cover from Manningville CE to Napanee CW. Originally rated 7¢ collect and rerated paid 5. St. Remi and Montreal transit and Napanee receiver (b/s). $75.00


Item 231-07 – St. Esprit LC (Montcalm) – 1856, stampless cover from St. Esprit LC rated 3d collect to Mascouche. Montreal and L’Assomption transit (b/s). Philip Mount was the Postmaster and Commandant of the 2nd Battn of the Leinster county in Mascouche. Mascouche is an off-island suburb of Montreal. Exhibit quality. $100.00

Item 231-08 – Surface rate to Russia – 1933, 6¢ Airmail (C3) tied by Thetford Mines Que roller cancel on cover paying 5¢ UPU letter rate to Russia. 1¢ overpaid and airmail handstamp crossed out. Russia internal transit and receiver b/s. $100.00


Item 231-09 – 2¢ UPU to England – 1892, 2¢ SQ tied by St. John NB squared circle precursor on 1¢ stationery card paying 2¢ UPU postcard rate to Liverpool England. The theory is that the sender thought the 2¢ SQ was needed to ensure the 2¢ UPU rate is accepted with a domestic card. See image for condition. $100.00

Item 231-11 – 2-Ring-7 St. John NB – 1871, 6¢ Large Queen tied by 2-Ring-7 from Saint John NB on cover paying 6¢ letter rate to US. (no backstamp). $100.00

Item 231-12 – Dundas Ont squared circle – 1897, Dundas Ont squared circle (WTW) on 1¢ stationery card to Toronto. The message is about a Bradley's Arnold Latin prose and Fletcher & Henderson’s Latin prose books. $25.00


Item 231-13 – Wine and liquor merchant Montreal – 1893, 3¢ SQ tied by Montreal duplex cancel on N. Quintal & Sons wholesale grocers advertising cover to Ottawa. Quintal was a wine and liquor merchant as well as a Europe/US/Asia importer. $125.00


Item 231-14 – Very late 6¢ airmail rate – 1932, 1¢ Arch, 3¢ Provisional and 6¢ Ottawa Conference (2) tied by Lennoxville cds on cover paying 16¢ airmail registered letter rate to US (6c airmail + 10c registration). Montreal transit and receiver (b/s). The airmail rate increased to 8¢ on August 1st. A very late 6¢ airmail rate and nice keyhole. $40.00 SOLD

Item 231-32 – Scarce pointing finger – 1959, 5¢ meter from Montreal on Bank of Montreal cover to Cherryville BC. Returned for better direction with the scarce pointing finger with‘’this cover not to be used again’’ at base. Montreal clerk b/s. $15.00


Item 231-33 – Found in an empty bag – 1999, 45¢ cover from Laval Que to Montreal ‘’found in an empty bag, cleared at Cranbrook BC ‘’signed’’ by the Ops supervisor with Cranbrook Klussendorf machine. Pretty cool modern cover. $20.00 SOLD

Item 231-34 – Penny taped and tied (1 of 4) – 1999, 45¢ stamp and an actual real penny taped and tied by jet spray cancel on cover paying the new 46¢ rate from St. Constant Que to Montreal. $15.00

On March 29, 2012, the federal government announced in its budget that it would withdraw the penny from circulation in the fall of 2012. The budget announcement eliminating the penny cited the cost of producing it at 1.6¢. The final penny was minted at the RCM's Winnipeg, Manitoba plant on the morning of May 4, 2012
