Dear Parents,
We the Eco Team would like to extend a huge thank you for another great ECO school year. Step by step we become a school that has a more comprehensive approach on sustainability and how we support our Earth, and other people and animals etc. who inhabit it.
We achieved Silver status this year from our Provincial Government (Ontario Eco Schools). It is no small feat, so congratulations goes out to all students, staff and families for coming on board for this exciting journey of knowledge and action in the name of sustainability. There are many schools in our province who are recognized as Ontario Eco Schools. None of these schools aquire this status easily. The bronze, silver, gold and platnum status' are not handed out easily (we invite you to explore the Ontario Eco Schools website if you ever have a moment). Thank you for contiuing to support our Boomerang Lunch Program, whereby we ask that all food packaging is returned home where the receiver can be reminded about their own family carbon footprint, and ask themselves if there is a
way that they can reduce it, even a small bit. Most of our Eco programs we run are about creating awareness and dialogue. For example, our initiative to not use single-use plastic water bottles creates awareness about the need to help our neighbours in the Southern Hemisphere, who are having increasing problems in accessing clean water. Because we our-selves have easy access to clean water, it is sometimes difficult to make these connections. In additon to this outreach, refraining from the purchase of plastic water bottles fuels the plastic problem our oceans are already facing. So we were thrilled when our school WON a water bottle refilling station a few weeks ago. Only all the Eco Schools of our Board were entered in a contest, and St. John won! It will be installed in our hallway next year!
So congratulations again and a huge ECO thank you goes out to all from the "Eco Eagles", St. John's Eco Team. Look for our school highlighted in the Catholic Register this summer. They will be talking about our Outdoor Classroom and us as one of the Board's Eco Schools!
