How fitting that this year Pope Francis is reminding all of us as members of the Church of the great gift we’ve received in the Blessed Virgin Mary. “The joyous veneration given to the Mother of God by the contemporary Church, in light of reflection on the mystery of Christ and on His nature, cannot ignore the figure of a woman (cf. Gal 4:4), the Virgin Mary, who is both the Mother of Christ and Mother of the Church. In some ways, this was already present in the mind of the Church from the premonitory words of Saint Augustine and Saint Leo the Great. In fact, the former says that Mary is the mother of the members of Christ, because with charity she cooperated in the rebirth of the faithful into the Church, while the latter says that the birth of the Head is also the birth of the body, thus indicating that Mary is at once Mother of Christ, the Son of God, and mother of the members of his Mystical Body, which is the Church. These considerations derive from the divine motherhood of Mary and from her intimate union in the work of the Redeemer, which culminated at the hour of the cross. Indeed, the Mother standing beneath the cross (cf. Jn 19:25) accepted her Son’s testament of love and welcomed all people in the person of the beloved disciple as sons and daughters to be reborn unto life eternal. She thus became the tender Mother of the Church which Christ begot on the cross handing on the Spirit. Christ, in turn, in the beloved disciple, chose all disciples as ministers of His love towards His Mother, entrusting her to them so that they might welcome her with filial affection. As a caring guide to the emerging Church, Mary had already begun her mission in the Upper Room, praying with the Apostles while awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit (cf. Acts 1:14). In this sense, in the course of the centuries, Christian piety has honored Mary with various titles, in many ways equivalent, such as Mother of Disciples, of the Faithful, of Believers, of all those who are reborn in Christ; and also as ‘Mother of the Church’.” Pope Francis has therefore fixed the date for the universal Church to celebrate the memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church, on the Monday after Pentecost. Let’s take the next week leading up to Pentecost in preparing to receive a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit to also pray in gratitude for the gift of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Our Lady of Good Counsel, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Sorrows... our Mother. Happy Mother’s Day, Mary.

MAY 6, 2018ASCENSION OF THE LORD

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY, MARY

Sometimes (perhaps most times), we don’t recognize all that our mother does for us. Moms have many roles: alarm clock, bookkeeper, chauffer, nurse, referee, sous chef, and therapist, to name but a few. Even if this relationship is far from perfect, Mother’s Day is a time to recognize how great a gift from God is the woman who is our mother.

Acts 1:14). In this sense, in the course of the centuries, Christian piety has honored Mary with various titles, in many ways equivalent, such as Mother of Disciples, of the Faithful, of Believers, of all those who are reborn in Christ; and also as ‘Mother of the Church’.”

Pope Francis has therefore fixed the date for the universal Church to celebrate the memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church, on the Monday after Pentecost.

ADULT FAITH FORMATIONADULT FAITH FORMATION

ATTENTION, MEN OF ST. SUSANNA PARISH…

We are excited to announce “Welcome,” the updated version of “CRHP” (which is now owned by Matthew

Kelly). It’s run by parishioners for parishioners, and it’s re-energizing parishes across the country.

Most of the people you see every day feel like something is missing in their lives. Welcome is an incredible experience that helps them discover what that something is -- and what to do about it. If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you should be a part of the weekend. Don’t wait – spaces are filling up fast. The St. Susanna Welcome weekend retreat for men will be held Saturday, May 19th and Sunday, May 20th. Through fellowship, faith sharing, hospitality, music, individual and group activities, Mass, and more, participants have the opportunity to step back from the everyday to reflect on their lives and their spiritual journeys and build meaningful relationships with other men in the parish. Welcome is free to attend and all meals are provided. Contact Fraser McCurrach at [email protected] for more information, or by phone at (513) 515-7793.

Sponsors will be matched with a good fit person for them.

If you are interested in becoming a parish sponsor, please visit: www.stsusanna.org/teachthefaith.

BECOMING CATHOLIC!

This week, our candidates and catechumens studied how Catholics view the Bible! Did you know the Catholic Church has a whole document called “Dei Verbum” or “God’s Word” given to us at the second Vatican Council? We believe that through the scriptures, God reveals Himself to us. We see the books and verses in light of our entire salvation history. We don’t in other words take verses out of context, but must instead see them in relationship to the whole Bible.

The Bible is also seen through the lens of tradition. That tradition is given to us through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As Catholics study the scriptures, we also look at those readings through a historical lens. We do not read scriptures literally, but make use of the “historical critical” method. This means we study the different literary forms utilized throughout. Most of all, we see the Bible as divinely inspired. It is one of the main ways we encounter Christ. So, dig into the story! Put yourself in the scene and see how God and ultimately the sacrifice of His Son Jesus, provide you with a means of eternity in God’s kingdom!

ST. SUSANNA WOMAN’S ASSOCIATION GARAGE SALE IS COMING UP!

June is fast approaching and plans are well under way. Let’s all help to make this sale the best ever. Everyone in the Parish can help in some way.

First and foremost , we need things to sell.Clean out that clutter and unused items from your closets, basement, and garage, and save them for the Garage Sale. The Women’s Association can sell pretty much anything that is reusable – books, toys, clothing, jewelry, furniture, working appliances, tools, flatware, dishes, home décor, picture frames, sporting goods, etc. If you are unsure, please just give us a call.

Set all your items aside to bring to the Meyer Center beginning Saturday, June 16. Donations continue to be accepted from June 17 through June 20. The sale dates are June 22 and 23.

Secondly, we need volunteers! Volunteers are needed during pre-sale hours for setup, sorting, and pricing. Volunteers are needed for the 2-day sale to help with checkout. Volunteers are needed at the end of the sale to dismantle tables and load leftovers into the St. Vincent de Paul trucks. Teens and preteens can earn service hours.

And, of course, we need shoppers! Keep in mind that the Garage Sale is more than just a fund raiser. The sale is a ministry to our community allowing individuals and families to stretch their shopping dollars by buying clothing, household appliances, and other necessary items at reasonable and affordable prices.

And proceeds from the sale provide funds to purchase special items for the Parish and to assist its various ministries. Questions, comments? Contact Christine Phelan at 513-492-7265 or [email protected] or Mary Ann Vossler at 513-257-3892 or [email protected].

THANK YOU!

Thank you to the volunteers from St. Susanna (which included individual parishioners and several of our volleyball teams) who participated in the Help Build Hope project on May 5th with our brothers and sisters from Christ’s Hope Church. Collectively, there were about 50 teams that built 130 walls for 5 houses. These houses were going to help single moms and veterans to have a place to live. CHILDREN’S FAITH FORMATION

ST. SUSANNA SCHOOL IS HAVING A “CERTIFIED WILD SCHOOL SITE” DEDICATION CEREMONY!

Please join St. Susanna students, faculty and staff along with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, in a ceremony to dedicate St. Susanna School as a Certified Wild School Site! The ceremony will take place outdoors on Thursday, May 17th, at 1:00pm in conjunction with the celebration of World Outdoor Classroom Day.

As part of the ceremony, each student will have painted a rock to place in a rock garden. Each rock represents both their individuality as well their membership within our faith community. The concept is based on a book “Only One You” by Linda Kranz, which is being shared with the students this month. Some messages from the book include “There’s Only One You in this great big world. Make it a better place.”, “Always be on the lookout for a new friend.” and “Slow down and notice details around you.” The hope is that each year, new students will add their rocks to the beautiful mix. Thank you to the PTO for their sponsorship of this project!

For ReflectionDo I live as if I am Christ’s presence on earth, aware that I am his missionary?

If Jesus were in my family, social, and professional situations, what would he do?

When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.

Sent to be Missionaries

The beginning of the Book of Acts presents a summary of the life of Christ and how he

called and taught the apostles in the Holy Spirit. After his resurrection, Christ kept the apostles in Jerusalem, where they prayed together with the Virgin and awaited the coming of the Holy Spirit which would give them power to witness to him beyond the city and into the outlying countries and regions, just as the Gospel reading commands.

This Spirit given to them by Christ is a spirit of mission and witness. When Jesus was finished speaking, when his revelation had finished, he was taken to heaven. And the apostles were left standing there, looking up after him.

That looking up can be interpreted as a longing for Jesus’ presence that was no longer in human form. Things had radically changed. Jesus’ mission had finished, and now theirs was beginning. Their situation is the same as ours. We are sent on a mission!

An essential element of being Christian is to understand that we are sent into the world to build Christ’s kingdom. We are his missionaries, his representatives. He counts on us to go into the world and bring his message to all his beloved children just as he did—with preaching, testimony, and love. Jesus doesn’t send us to be comfortable, professionally successful, and wealthy. He sends us to be missionaries!
