The 27th AGM was held on 28 June 2015 in the Chan Ah Kow Hall. There were 47 members who registered for the meeting. As the Honorary Secretary, Mr Tan Kia Kam was hospitalised, the Chairman of the meeting, Mr Wilson Chua informed the members that the Committee had appointed the Honorary Treasurer, Mrs Amy Teo to be the Honorary Secretary for the meeting.

The meeting started off with the Chairman’s opening speech. The usual agenda items then followed and were carried out with no discussions or questions raised. Members present confirmed and approved the Minutes of the last AGM (26th AGM); the Annual Report and Financial Statements of the Club for the year ended 31 March 2015 together with the Auditor’s report and the re-appointment of McMillanWoods as the auditors for the fiscal year 2015/2016.

The Hon Secretary presented the agenda item which was the proposed amendments to be made to the Constitution and took the members through the amendments with explanations of the reasons for the changes. There was no objection from the floor and the proposed amendments were approved by the members present.

Under the agenda item of “to transact any other business for which seven clear days’ notice had been given in writing to the Honorary Secretary”, the meeting was informed that one letter had been received from a member, Mr Henry Phua and Mr Phua had raised three topics for consideration. These topics touched on increased contribution by members to enhance the Club’s funds, review of the social badminton nights and allowing veterans to use the gym during peak hours. After some discussions, the Committee advised that no changes would be made to present arrangements. The Committee thanked Mr Phua for his letter and advised that they would look into some of the suggestions at an opportune time.

The Club Chairman then updated the meeting on the progress of the Club’s land lease. Members were informed that there had been some development and Sport Singapore had in March contacted the Club to enquire if the Club preferred a 15 years straight lease or a tenancy agreement for 3+3+3 years and whether we had funds to pay for a 15 years’ straight lease. We had responded saying that the preference is for a straight 15 years but we needed to know what the premium would cost before we can advise if we had the funds. Option of a 10 years’ lease was also mentioned and information on our current funds position were provided. The committee pursued the matter with the hope of obtaining some concrete news to inform the members at the AGM but felt that with the SEA games in June, it may be better to hold off till after this big event. The Chairman reassured the members that the Committee will be following up with Sport Singapore soon.

The members were informed that the Club currently has only $6 million set aside for the land lease renewal, and it is inevitable that a top-up by members would be required if a 15 years’ lease is offered. The Hon Treasurer then presented some top-up numbers to be contributed by the members assuming different scenarios of the asking lease premiums ranging from $10 to $15 million and attrition rates of members of 20% and 30%.

After the presentation, the Chairman opened the floor for members to provide their views and feedback. Many members took to the microphone to share their feelings and preferences and a lively discussion followed. Members who spoke also indicated preference for a 15 years’ lease and acknowledged that a top up is inevitable. A number of members voiced that the Committee is doing an excellent job and expressed their confidence for the Committee to go ahead and negotiate for the renewal of the land lease. The Hon Treasurer reassured members that the Committee is working very hard on this issue and have explored and will be exploring plans and options and more will be shared with members as things develop.

The Chairman thanked all present for their support of the Committee’s efforts and closed the meeting at 5.15pm.
