Happy New Year! The 1st of January is New Years Day- the beginning of a New Year. On New Years Eve (31st December ) , many people stay up until midnight (12 oclock at night) to welcome in the New Year.

New Years activities differ from household to household but generally, people celebrate by having a party or a meal with their loved ones. They remember the events of the previous year and look forward to the year ahead.

Read on to find out more about how children in Year 4 at Northcote Primary School celebrate New Year.

Firstly, many of us spring-clean our houses to get rid of anything from last year that we dont need anymore and create space for a fresh start.

Next, many of us spend time with our family and friends enjoying a meal, playing games or having a party.

After that, we count down the minutes until New Year- 5,4 3,2,1.

When the clock strikes 12 oclock, many of us take part in traditional activities. For example many of us gather together, join hands and sing the traditional New Years Eve song Auld Lang Syne. Some of us go out on to our streets, shout and cheer and wish our neighbours a Happy New Year. Many of us enjoy fireworks which signal the beginning of New Year.

Finally, lots of us make New Years Resolutions on New Years Day. That means we make promises to make ourselves and our lives better this year.

II promise to keep my room tidy.

I promise to be nicer to my friends.

Happy New Year!
