VIRUSES – THREAT TO COMPUTERS

- By B Seshadri, CRD Cell

Life, as we know, would be crippled without computers. From the basic communication, finances, data management and to even medical science, computers control just about everything that life in a modern society depends upon. But unfortunately great breakthroughs are often followed by people who are hell-bent on bringing it all down. These people only see loopholes of an innovation in technology and will go to any lengths to exploit it. These are the very people who create viruses. A computer virus can be defined as an executable program capable of infecting other computer programs by modifying them to include a copy of itself. By infecting programs, these viruses are capable of spreading through an entire network of computers, infecting every machine that is incapable of protecting itself. During this process it could do a world of damage to our computer which could cost us dear. Perhaps the most dreaded computing experiencing for all computer experts is when we find that our PC has been infected by a virus. More often than not we end up wasting precious time trying to undo the damage caused.

Based on infecting pattern, viruses can be categorized into following categories :

(a) File Viruses : These viruses are pieces of code that attach themselves to executable files, drives files or compressed files and are activated when the host program is run. Most file viruses spread by loading themselves into memory and looking for any other programs located on the drive. (b) Boot Sector Viruses : These viruses affects the boot sector of hard disk which is a very crucial part of the computer. These type of viruses does not affect the files, instead it affects the disks that contain them. During the old days when programs were carried around in floppies, these viruses spread like wild fire. (c) Multipartite Viruses: These viruses are a combination of boot sector and file viruses. These viruses come through infected media and reside in memory. Later they move to the boot sector from where they infect the executable files and spread across the systems. (d) Macro Viruses : These viruses are created using certain applications or programs that contains macros while include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Corel Draw, Ami Pro etc. Since these are written in a language of the application and not in that of an operating system, these are platform

2 Computer

independent and can spread between Windows, Mac and any other system as long as they are running the required application. (e) Network Viruses : These kind of viruses are proficient in quickly spreading across Local Area Network (LAN) or even over the internet. Normally these are spread through shared resources such as drives and folders. Once it infects, it searches for potential targets by searching the network for other vulnerable systems. (f) Email Viruses : An email virus could be a form of macro virus that spread itself to all the contacts located in the hosts email address book. If any of the e-mail recipients open the attachment of the infected mail, it spreads to the new host’s address book contacts and then proceeds to send itself to all the contacts in the host’s address book as well.

Besides the types of viruses mentioned above, there are other types/variants that are doing rounds and causing a serious headache to the computer experts. These include Trojan horses, Remote Access Trojans, Password sending Trojans, Key loggers, FTP Trojans, Spy ware, Worms etc. The problem about these computer viruses is that unless your anti-virus program tells you about it, you are not aware that your computer is infected. However, here are a few symptoms to look out for :-

The computer runs very slow and it takes a long time to start. Out of memory error appears even though you have plenty of RAM. Windows restarts unexpectedly. A partition completely disappears. Windows will not start because certain critical system files are not found. Strange dialog boxes or message boxes appear on the screen. Programs that used to run smoothly now stop responding frequently. Your anti-virus program is disabled for no reason and it cannot be

restarted. The attachment which you opened recently has a double extension such

as .jpg .vbs or .gif .exe

The above symptoms are never a sure shot sign of a virus infection. There could always be a software glitch or a loose data cable or even more, compatibility issues that could be causing such errors.

Not even the best anti-virus software can protect you from disasters if we are not careful about certain things. Even though you are not paranoid about security, you should always take the following precautions for safe computing :-

Use a firewall if you have an ‘always on’ Internet connection. Turn off file sharing on your PC if you don’t need it.

3 Computer

Don’t open attachments when you receive e-mails from unknown sources.

Update your windows operating system regularly using Autopatcher facility which is available for free on the internet.

Always install the latest service packs for the Microsoft Programs. These packs can be downloaded for free from www.microsoft.com or can be found on the CDs supplied free with computer magazines.

Preferably install anti-virus software that has the facility to updating the anti-virus definitions. Some of the popular anti-virus software that have this facility include Norton Anti Virus Suite, McAfee Virus Scan, Trend Micro PC-llin, Panda Platinum Anti-Virus Systems, Avast!4 Home edition etc.

If your anti-virus program has the facility to make bootable CD/Restore disks, take time off to make one of those and keep it handy.

You can also contribute your bit towards a computer virus free world is you

are alert and follow the steps listed below as a precautionary measure :-

If your computer is infected by a virus and is connected to a network, unplug the network cable from the computer.

Advise users of the other computers on the network to scan their machines just to make sure that the virus hasn’t spread already .

Do not share CD/DVDs that were burnt on the infected PCs without scanning them for viruses first.

Keep the above points in mind and enjoy being a part of virus free computer

world.

PROMISES OF THE NEW YEAR

- By RK Verma, DRDO HQrs

At the dawn of every New Year I sit up and think, time and again; How to play my cards this year So that the maximum be my gain

I chalk out new strategies and make new equations I foresee my achievements as an expert astrologer; I plan my resources with utmost precautions So that in the New Year I may not be a loser.

I know that the New Year will not be a bed of roses Rather it will be full of challenges, full of adventures; As it has always been for the poor masses, But I would not give up, like backbenchers.

The New Year may or may not turn out as I expect But I will allow it not to mould my chosen course; With an iron will, I shall make it to a committee of select And will grant the evils their due, i.e. divorce.

Like bad workmen I shall not abuse my tools I will carve out with them the finest specimens; Which will become the envy of even the best schools And will make them strong so as to withstand great pains.

My resources are limited no doubt But I will burn mid-night oil and will not stop; As firm is my will and the courage stout After all, I know that a Hillary would reach the Everest’s top.

SHARE BLOOD – SHARE LIFE

- By Bishnupada Goldar, CAO(C&W)

With the development of medical sciences the need of blood transfusion is increasing by leaps and bounds. Blood is normally required to be transfused in the following cases :

• Anaemia • Major Surgical Operation • Accidents resulting in considerable blood loss • Cancer patients requiring therapy • Women in childbirth and new born babies in certain cases • Patients of hereditary disorders like Haemophilia and Thalassaemia • Severe burn victims

There is no substitute for human blood. Blood is not manufactured in a

factory and animal blood cannot be transfused to human being. Artificial/ synthetic blood is still in research stage. Even if tomorrows science can come out with artificial blood, it will be a very costly item for a country like India. The basic blood science is as under :-

Blood Plasma (55%) Cell (45%) Water (92%) Salts and other items (8%) RBC WBC Platelets

Presence of Red Blood Corpuscles (RBC) in blood is 45 lakh to 85 lakh per cubic millimetre and life span of the same is 120 days. In case of White Blood Corpuscles (WBC) it is 4500 to 8500 per cubic millimetre and life span of the same varies from 02 to 20 days for different types of WBC. Life span of platelets is upto 02 days and its presence is 1.5 lakh to 3 lakh per cubic millimetre.

Blood can be obtained either from blood banks or from friends/ relatives of the patients which is known as replacement donation. Since patients coming for treatment from distant places are not accompanied with friends and relatives, replacement donation of blood is not always possible. We can voluntarily donate blood in any blood bank after every three months. Thus we can make the blood banks full of blood for all times.

10 Open Page

If a man is requested to donate blood, he makes lame excuses that he is already under weight. On the other hand he demands that he also needs blood. But it is a totally wrong conception. Volume of blood in human body depends on the weight of a person. Normally a healthy man has roughly at least 76 ml of blood per kilogram of his body weight, whereas this amount is 66 ml of blood per kilogram of body weight in case of a woman. 50 ml of blood per kg of body weight in the circulation system is more than sufficient for performing normal routine work. Hence, the automatic deduction is that men have 26 ml/kg and women have 16 ml/kg of blood in the circulation system as surplus or factor of safety. It has been scientifically established that if 08 ml of blood per kg of one’s body weight is donated, no harm is done to the body mechanism in any way. Further, there is no chance of contacting blood communicable diseases like AIDs by donating blood, since disposable sets are used. In India one must have a body weight 45 kg or more for donating blood. So a healthy man of 45 kg can donate 45 X 8 = 360 ml of blood. But in our country not more than 350 ml of blood is collected from a donor. So we can now calculate how much blood is having in our own body, how much of that is required for normal circulation and how much blood is surplus. The liquid part of the donated blood is made up automatically within 2 days and cells are completely replenished within 21 days. For recuperation of the donated blood, no additional nutritious food, rest, medicine or tonic is needed. The gap between two donations should be at least 90 days or three months. A healthy person aged between 18 – 60 can donate 58 ltrs and 800 ml of blood in 168 times during his life time. So let us donate blood at a regular interval without any fear.

W ILL IT? WON’T IT?

(An ode to Murphy’s Law)

- By Prasanth Menon, CAO/P-1

When you live alone, you tend to develop strange habits! I too have one. Sitting on my bed, every time I fling an empty coke can at the dustbin, I make a wish! If the can lands inside the bin, the wish will come true and if doesn’t, the wish will not.

That’s when life reveals how cruel it can be. Every time I desperately

want a wish to come true, the coke can lands – as a rule – outside the bin! And on occasions when I absentmindedly fling it, it lands – as a rule again, - straight into the bin! All I can say is LIFE LOVES TO NEEDLE YOU IN DESPERATE MOMENTS!!

…And that is what Murphy’s Law is all about. It is simply a supposed

law of nature…to the effect that ‘anything that can go wrong, will go wrong…’ or simply said, that which should not happen will happen and that which should happen will not! Interesting isn’t it?

I remember those desperate moments I spent at the bus-stop waiting

for a bus to CP …but all the buses that came along then would be bound for South Extension. Then there were days when I had to be in South Extension in the next 30 minutes, but all the buses that came along would be bound for CP.

Life’s scheming ways do not end there. The delicious smells from my

neighbour’s kitchen hit my nostrils only when I am hungry and there’s nothing in my kitchen and when I am too lazy to work. And the days I have a full stomach, the neighbours don’t seem to be cooking at all!

Now don’t tell me, it’s hunger that makes one’s nostrils pick-up the

smell. Ok! But how do you explain this thing with the phone? The days I’m at home, bored out of my mind, and itching for a conversation, the cell refuses to tinkle! I keep checking the screen for any missed calls or SMSes, but there are none! I then click and see whether the incoming calls are barred or not, but that can’t be… coz, I just got a message from 123 asking me as to whether I needed a particular ‘personal loan’ or not…!! And then there are evenings when I am busy at my office discussing with my colleagues, and everybody who knows me, suddenly remembers to call me. Have you ever wondered why you receive the maximum number of phone calls when you are either taking a shower or having your food??!!

12 Open Page

Think, you are in a movie house, it always happens that people

coming in to watch the movie after the show has started…always come and sit on the rows in front of you, blocking your view of the screen just when favourite hero is delivered a thrilling punch!

The examples are many. So I’ll now end with the most recent and

the spookiest! I begin my mornings with a walk in the nearby park where I used to

run into this petite beauty! Her frizzy hair made her look like a Greek Goddess! I often thought of striking a conversation with her, but the stern gaze she gave me from behind her frameless lenses, made me abandon the idea! She’d haunt me for the rest of the day, and till the next morning, but who would like to begin the day with a snub? So I let it be…!!!

Then one day I went on a holiday after almost a year and visited a

place called McLeodganj, stayed there in a Buddhist Monastery where they thought you art like Zen and Kaizen and told you things like why it is good to be a celibate and how one should treat every woman in this planet as you would treat your mother…!

My purification went on for about three weeks, before I returned to

real life and set out on my morn walk with a renewed vigor. In the park, someone squealed from behind “Hey! Hi! Where have you been so long? “. It was the frizzy haired girl, and this time around, she wasn’t sporting her glasses either!

I got the lesson…WHEN YOU WANT SOMETHING, DON’T WANT

IT. Life will give it to you on a platter then!!! Epilogue: These days we both jog in the same direction. And

yesterday, the frizzy haired girl asked me… “Have I not added fat?”. I was about to say “No”. But I thought, she might either not believe me, or think, I am not paying enough attention to notice anything about her….Now if I say “Yes”, she might still not believe me, or I might be faced with more questions that tests my patience…Like “Where have I put on weight?” “Why is this running around the park is not yielding anything?” and so on. So I decided to answer her diplomatically. I thought of saying “Dear, you’ve not only kept your figure, but you’ve added so much to it!” or else I could say “Le vie a ses raisons, que la raisen ne connait points” …”The life has its

13 Open Page

reasons, of which, reason knows nothing….” …I finally said this to her…which is in no way related to what she had asked me…!!!
