Welcome to another exciting and fun filled year at Hidden Harbor Yacht Club. We would like to wel-come our new Bridge led by Commodore Vic and Kari Portolese, pictured here.

I’d like to start by wishing everybody a happy and healthy new year! I’m your new Commodore, Victor Portolese. More about me later… 2017 was a great year for boating, with above average weather for boating across all of the HHYC event weekends. Here’s hoping for even better conditions in 2018. Under the excellent leadership of Dane Fantz, the 2017 HHYC board was quite busy, and a lot got accomplished. Several goals were set in January, and all were achieved before the end of the year. HHYC is an all-volunteer club, so it takes all of us to perpetuate the success we’ve all enjoyed. Over 20 members stepped up to host the myriad of events in 2017, and we will need at least that many of you to help make this year as successful as the last. Leading the charge into 2018 is Your Bridge: Commodore – Victor (Vic) Portolese Vice Commodore – Larry Parrett Rear Commodore – Jeff Quinn Past Commodore – Dane Fantz Equally critical to the operation of the club are the board members. My sincerest gratitude for volunteering to serve on the 2018 board go out to: P/C Paul Quinn P/C Dennis Kroeger P/C Rick Lee Carol Soffel Sue Burke HHYC also has five “non-voting” officer positions that keep things running: Treasurer – Sue Collins Fleet Captain – P/C Rick Lee Judge Advocate – Sharon Lee Sargent-at-arms – PC/Rick Lee Did you notice that there are only four positions mentioned? We have been without an official club secretary for several years. The position is not a difficult one, but is critical none-the-less. If you would like to volunteer for
that position, please let me know. These past couple of years has found us bouncing between a couple of “less than ideal” locations for our monthly board meetings, but we have found ourselves back at the Eastlake Bar & Grill for the bulk of 2018. We have signed a contract that reserves the upstairs dining room through our June meeting, so we are back at a place where the business of the meeting can be conducted without requiring a loudspeaker! If you haven’t been to a meeting in a while (or ever,) please consider joining us at some point this year. The meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month, with the exception of July and August. Happy Hour ends at 6:00 PM, and the official board meeting begins at 6:30 PM. A huge bonus for us is that Alissa (our dedicated server) is very good and will make sure you don’t get too thirsty as we’ve experienced many times these past couple of years! Speaking of the board meetings, it may be helpful for you to know a little about me since I’ll be wielding the gavel for the year. I’ve been employed at Edmonds Community College in the Information Technology Division since 1985. I lead a team of software developers, database experts, and business analysts. I’ve been in that leadership role since the early 90’s, so I’ve got a management hat on for the vast majority of my time. My wife, Kari, and I have been boating since late 1992 when we bought our first trailer boat. We purchased Oliva, our 2004 Sea Ray 280, in the fall of 2011, and joined HHYC in 2012. As a member of HHYC, I’ve been able to leave my management hat behind, so most of you will likely perceive me as a talkative extrovert. That side of my personality is relatively new, and a bit awkward for me at times. My natural personality is quite introverted, and my communication style can be more direct than many would prefer. As this will likely come out during the board meetings, it will probably result in moving us through the business of the meetings relatively quickly. I will try to keep us on subject, but will also be sure to encourage input from all present. I will also try to keep track of any “off the subject” comments for further discussion during the new or old business portions of the meeting. Oh, and… there’s been rumor of a door prize being given at each meeting.
We’ve got all but two events locked down for the year. The first event that’s a bit up in the air is Memorial Day at Bremerton. The marina does not allow reservations before 9:00
AM on January 2nd for the following year’s holiday weekends. I’ve already talked to the marina, and have been given tips on how to give us the best shot at locking the weekend down. The second event that has yet to be coordinated is for Halloween. It seems like a long time from now, but events and locations do fill up early. As we don’t have a volunteer host for that weekend yet, I’m hoping somebody will step-up and we can get the ball rolling. Finally of note for 2018 is a change in venue for Labor Day Weekend. For the second time in just a few years, the Cap Sante Marina has called to inform us that our reservation was not accepted. The reason given (again) is that somebody signed up before us, even though we were verbally told that we were “in” when we filled out the request last Labor Day. Their loss! For this year we will be visiting Oak Harbor for Labor Day Weekend. That is their annual music festival weekend, so I’m really looking forward to good crab and great music! We will also be returning to Kingston this March. We’ve been invited to hang out with the KCYC club members on that Friday evening, and then we’ll have our Garlic Fest (or something else) on Saturday. Finally, our first event of the year is just a couple of weeks away. The Commodore’s Ball will take place on January 20 at the Embassy Suites on the East Side. Our hosts, P/C Mary & Brian Scott, have planned an excellent evening for all of us. However, this year requires us to pay in advance for the event. Please respond to the evite and send your payment (or even pay online via the HHYC store on the club website) as soon as possible. Be safe out there! Vic
