Dinner out? We’ve got just the spot, right here in Pomona! In the interest of full disclosure, we

have visited McKinley’s many timesbefore – mainly for lunch but, from timeto time, a quiet breakfast meeting or aspecial dinner. This was the first timethey actually knew we were comingwith a camera and notebook in hand.

The restaurant is tucked away insidethe Sheraton Fairplex Hotel at McKin-ley and White Avenues and featuresboth fine dining and a full bar. When

we were there, wehad no trouble beingseated.

During slow pe-riods, most dinersare guests staying atthe hotel – they au-tomatically ask foryour room numberso they can bill themeal to your room.(I told them theycould bill the meal

It may be the best restaurant Pomonahas to offer but, just to be safe, we’regoing to let you judge for yourself. Ei-ther way, La Nueva Voz enjoyed dinnerat McKinley’s Grille last month and wewould definitely recommend it to any-one looking for the right spot for thatspecial event or just a special night out.

to room 234, butthat we weren’tstaying at the hotel.)

The service wasgreat and our selec-tions were top notch– all because of thecombination of aprofessional staff(from the kitchen tothe table) and a pro-fessional executivechef, David Teig, even though Teigwas on vacation thenight we were there.

Manager TimKelly and our server, Melissa Hershey, took excellent care of us beginning witha glass of house cabernet (a brand called“Little Black Dress” from Pasadena –seriously, that was the name) and, forRenee Barbee, our director of advertis-ing, a glass of Jacob’s Creek Moscato, from Australia, which she said was bothvery sweet and very good.

We also enjoyed McKinley’s ownhomemade potato chips and special dip, compliments of the chef.

Our salads were part of McKinley’s“farm to table” produce offering, usingonly hand-harvested fruits and vegeta-bles grown on the restaurant’s ownMcKinley’s Urban Farm, a one-acreparcel on the grounds at Fairplex.

I enjoyed the Greek salad and Reneeordered a special mixed greens saladwith shredded carrots and onions.

Interestingly, the restaurant managermentioned he started his career as an in-tern at radio station KMAK in Fresno, acountry western station, while majoringin radio and television at CaliforniaState University, Fresno. (Even so, wedidn’t let him help us write this reviewand we didn’t notice any country musicin the restaurant during our dinner.)

Getting down to business, I wentwith the stewed lamb shank (you liter-ally will not need a knife) and Renee se-lected the grilled eight-ounce choicefilet mignon.

Vegetables included potatoes, car-rots, zucchini and yellow squash.

While we were there on Thanksgiv-ing weekend, the restaurant was alreadydecorated for the holidays – both insideand out. What can only be described asa quiet and stately ambience was com-plemented by soft piped-in piano music.

Other selections on the menu includeeverything from short rib ravioli andgrilled mahi mahi to line caught searedswordfish.

Prices range from $16 for an eightounce Wagyu beef burger to $36 for thefilet.

Order our selections including wineand a 20 percent gratuity and you canget out the door for just under $100.

We enjoyed the evening and we likethe fact that it is right here in Pomona –no need to drive to Chino Hills, Brea orPasadena for a nice evening out.

"There's nothing better than talking to people," said Smith, who grew up with mental illness in Claremont and Pomona. "That really brought the person I wasmeant to be out." Today, he said, he is reaching out to the community to tell the story of how thatchanged his life.

TURNING ON THE HOLIDAY LIGHTS AT LEROY HAYNES CENTER -- The kids at LeRoy Haynes Center in La Verne enjoyed cookies and cocoa and had a chance to sit on Santa's knee last monthas some 35,000 lights and nearly two miles of extension cords were turned on to celebrate the holiday season. This year's lighting project, designed by Doug Henton, LeRoy Haynes' facilities man-ager, includes 126 different channels making up a total of nine displays that dance to the music. Motorists can stop, view the lights and listen to the music over their car radio on 88.3 FM throughoutthe holiday season. The lighting project, which required about two months of planning, took three weeks to install. Photos of kids with Santa were provided by Chris Johnston, of Queen Mary Photog-raphy Service in Long Beach (www.queenmaryphotography.com), who donated his time for the evening. Volunteer Gordie Norman, a Glendora Rotarian, served as Santa. Pictured on Santa's knee isLeRoy Haynes resident Jacob, 10.
