And so it begins…

My office window on most days has an amazing view… however I much prefer it when I can’t see

Spion Kopje because of the snow falling at such a rate that it blurs everything.Don’t get me wrong, I love a bluebird day as much as the next person, but at this time of the season the less I see of Spion Kopje the better. As I write, I can’t see the car park! This means it is puking up top and our base is building nicely.Obviously in condition like this, visibility can be challenging, weather conditions can change and are volatile to say these least… and that’s when it is really important to ensure everyone in your party is dressed appropriately. One of the most regularly asked question our Visitor Information Centre team receives, particularly from first timers is “how should I dress today?” When I’m asked this question, I’m reminded of the quote “there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes” …So, the answer is really ‘layering’… and ensuring that exposed outer layers have the appropriate water repellent rating. The Waterproof rating or standards that you will see on many brands of outdoor/ski clothing varies from 0-20,000mm+. Sometimes this is represented as 10k, 20k, or a variance there of.

What does this rating mean? In a nutshell, the higher the number, the better the waterproofing will be. Generally for Aussie snow conditions, anything in the 10-20k range will work really well. (Note: Fabrics made of Gore-tex or similar offer the greatest protection but they also come at a substantially greater cost). Now, once the outer shell (jacket and pant) rating is sorted, the next question is warmth. Start closest to your body. The base layer… here the choice of fabric is important. Wool or Synthetic is best. Never cotton! Why? Cotton whilst a tremendously versatile fabric, it is the worst fabric for cold, wet weather. Cotton can absorb up to 27 times its weight in water, hence not what you want next to your skin on a cold day! Furthermore, water conducts heat away from the body 25 times faster than air. Ditch the cotton, buy a wool or synthetic base layer. The same goes for your toes… wool or synthetic socks are best (so too are heated foot beds…but that’s cheating!).Next, is the mid layer. Here options are quite extensive. Fleece is most probably the best choice, and generally more cost effective. Combinations of fleece, goose down, merino, synthetic down…there are plenty to choose from. Thickness and comfort for the mid layer are a personal choice, but take function over form, warmth over glamour!

Staying warm and dry in challenging conditions is vital to ensuring that everyone is having fun. Nothing puts a dampener on anything quicker than being cold (pun intended). With small children, often fingers are the first to go. Warm, dry and easy to put on gloves are vital. The debate about mittens or gloves is an interesting one. So too, is the choice of fabric… either leather or synthetic, or a combination of both. Whether leather or synthetic, a good dose of repellent, either leather treatment wax or a coating of durable water repellent spray will do the trick. Once you’ve made the choice (I wear both types - but on cold days “the claw” is my go to - glove/mitten hybrid)… Throw in some “hand warmers”, rip open the packet, shake vigorously and these little sachets last for between 1-10 hours and help keep little hands toasty warm! Ok, so now you’re warm, dry and everyone is happy…get out there and have some fun.Foodie Recommendation of the Week: Someplace Else Bar & Grill - “What the Duck” burger with an entrée of the crumbed mushrooms… sensational (the crepes aren’t too bad either - allegedly - the little S’s can confirm this!). •Stuart Smythe, CEOFalls Creek Resort Management

Good Guide Training

With clear blue skies and sunshine we couldn’t have had better weather for our Guide Training weekend

to start off our DWA programs for 2017. Congratulations to all our newly qualified Volunteer Guides. Recipients of the Disabled Wintersport Australia Adaptive Snowsports Guide qualification this past weekend are - Katherine Higgs, Tarsha Autio, Anna Turner, Siobhan Barry, Katka Pavkova, Damian Ceddia, Scott Olorenshaw, Max Liolios, Sacha Boer, Kiera Frey and Julia Manton. We asked our guides (new and old) to share some of their highlights on this training weekend and I’d like to share some with you all:“Favourite thing… was tipping out of the sit-ski a bunch of times when we were on tethers. It gave me a good sense of what sometimes our participants feel and also that it’s not actually as bad as it looks and that was good to gain some perspective.” Penny Rogers, Guide“The highlight was putting ourselves in the shoes of a vision impaired skier and putting glad-wrap in our goggles… you could see shapes and shadows and colours but no definition in the snow… so you had to trust your guide to get you down the hill.” Hagan Fuller, Guide“Big highlight… the whole experience for me has been new…getting behind the sit-ski and trying to drive an empty sit-ski down the slope was an interesting experience.” Scott Olorenshaw, New Guide“Favourite thing… going down the runs, a couple of times, in the sit-ski - Love that! Blocking is the main thing I want to get better at and communicating with the primary skier while I’m blocking.” Adam Paykel-Samuel, Guide“The most interesting thing was the gear, to see it this close and not just on a picture

of somebody somewhere on the hill or on film. To see how it works, lifts up and the technical stuff around how we get it on a lift is something I’ve never come across.” Katka Pavkova, New Guide“The best fun was going down in the sit-ski with tethers on. The most interesting thing to try was piloting the sit-ski on a snowboard… that was a bit of fun!” Jeff Higgs, Guide“My highlight was learning new things and getting the sit-ski on and off the chairlift.” Katherine Higgs, New Guide“In a training weekend it’s hard to capture the fact that there are a lot of people out there that will be sitting inside while their family and friends are out there skiing.” DWA TrainerMany thanks to the attentive and diligent Falls Creek Lifties, Mountain Ops, Ticket staff and Guest Services who made running our training weekend a whole lot easier. This weekend we have our Youth Members Camp. Stay tuned to ‘This Week’ next week for all the details! If you would like to know more about Disabled Wintersport Australia, please Email Jess at: [email protected], or check out the website. •

A Fun Night

The annual Falls Creek Race Club Auction is on the Saturday 8th of July in The Boardroom at QT

(above FoodWorks) beginning at 7pm. Tickets are available on-line through the Falls Creek Race Club Online Shop and are incredibly priced. For only $25 you will be provided with a wonderful selection of local cuisine. Barry Iddles from Elk is catering and his food will put a smile on your face. Drinks are available at the bar.The race club auction is one of the social highlights of the season at Falls Creek. Our Race Club (FCRC) provides a starting point for young skiers and boarders who want to take the sport a little more seriously but in a fun environment with similarly minded sliders. Whether you’re a holiday program race club kid entering the FCRC for the first year or one of the many World Cup and Olympic athletes who have reached the top echelon of winter sports, FCRC has provided a welcoming start. Proudly FCRC’s alumni includes the current women’s mogul World Cup Overall Champion - Brit Cox.Essentially the auction is a significant fundraiser that helps children along their pathway as skiers and boarders. The support of many of the local and Melbourne snow industry businesses is vast and continues to be. We’ve managed to generate donations that will be auctioned that include and are not limited to: 1) Seven nights accommodation in Hakuba; 2) Resort Entry Season Passes for 2018; 3) amazing support from the Falls Creek and Mount Beauty restaurants will see many dinner vouchers available to the highest bidder; 4) return airfares to Japan and Falls Creek Lifts has generously donated many

sought after items. All of the funds generated on the night are reinvested into the club’s facilities to help the athletes reach their goals.Steve Lee, now operator of Backcountry Tours, hails from the FCRC and will host the auction evening in his entertaining, relaxed and fun style. He also reached the pinnacle of ski racing, beating the world. Thank you Steve for your ongoing contributions. Finally, the FCRC Auction is open to all. Come along for a good time, support the club to raise funds and hopefully get a seriously good deal on something connected to snow! And, it goes without saying that the Falls Creek Race Club families contribute to the winter community at Falls Creek in many ways.

Update - Trivia NightThe FCRC trivia evening was held last Monday with a purely social purpose. The trivia night allowed all families to meet the coach of their child in a fun setting. Thank you to Fraser Wilkinson for his efforts to organise a great range of questions that had everyone involved and to Steve Lee as host. Competition was fierce and congratulation to the Zukis Mob who threw everything in to claim the big prize. Thanks everyone. • Mike Gould, Secretary, FCRCPS: Rossignol Cup and Cranky Charlie this coming Friday 14th to be followed by presentations and a BBQ at the Race Club about mid afternoon. •

CROSS COUNTRY NEWSCROSS COUNTRY NEWSat Howman’s Gap for the winter and is training for next seasons World Cup circuit. I caught up with Mark during the week to learn about his way into skiing. “I actually swam competitively until I was 18 and for a long time my dream was to represent Australia in swimming. Giving up swimming was definitely a hard decision but looking back now I’m glad I did which left the door open for cross country skiing” says Mark. Growing up in Albury, Mark’s family was “heavily involved in the Wangaratta Ski Club at Hotham.” Mark has many “great memories of weeks at the ski club skiing and running around with other kids.”Humble beginningsIt was an early upbringing among the mountains and on the snow that meant when Mark “finished swimming and went off to uni,” he realised that he had such a healthy and motivating background with skiing that he found no problem converting fully to Cross Country. His swimming then complemented very well the move to skiing as he not only took fitness but also he developed important competitive energy. “We had a really high performing group of kids for a country swimming club and outperforming expectations fed the group motivation.” With his first season overseas being after his first year of uni,

As the Victorian Junior Championships approach next weekend, the Junior National Team

Camp has just finished, and the Victorian Junior Team Camp is underway. This week I thought I’d really get to know some of our current junior skiers and the weird and wonderful ways of how they got into the sport. In Australia, every kid gets dropped off by their parents at the local swimming pool at some point in their childhood and, like throwing eggs at the wall, some will crack and say they’ve had enough, and very few will continue. However, with skiing being such a minority sport in Australia, the kind of formula required to produce passionate and talented young skiers becomes an intriguing concept to explore. The Dynamic Mark PollockPerhaps one of the swimming eggs that almost didn’t crack was now Senior XC Team and World Cup Athlete Mark Pollock. Mark, after recently missing a promising European season due to Glandular Fever, is now living

Mark’s journey seems like a late one. However, interestingly a formula of good XC foundations, swimming fitness and swimming mentality has put him in good stead for a career in the sport. Now, having established himself upon the XC scene, Mark has no regrets, saying that his favourite part about it is “when you get a group of friends putting the hard yards and pull off a bunch of (personally) good results in the overseas scene.” Another favourite is spending “four months of the year travelling with your best mates.”

CROSS COUNTRY NEWSA starkly different avenueI want to compare Mark with the ‘late’ Stella Ajani. I say “late” because she has recently taken a break from skiing on the National Team to become a future prime minister at ANU in Canberra (maybe it’s a long-term strategy to get more funding into skiing), however what is most interesting is that Stella’s family had no skiing background and until Stella was 12, she had seldom been to the snow.“I used to be a competitive gymnast and trained about 20 hours per week. I’d been competing since I was five.” Eventually Stella felt confined within the gymnasium and had desired to be out in nature. The wonders of a good programStella’s school was Ivanhoe Grammar - a school known in the skiing scene for its excellent program. For years, it has converted happy and healthy young girls into strong skiers - Stella started when she was 12 years old. “I’ve had heaps of national team members to look up to throughout my skiing career. My support and inspiration has been through the people in team Ivanhoe.”The magic of Kangaroo HoppetBack home, in the lovely Mount Beauty, Jarrah Forrer was born sixteen years ago, a boy who “would run around the mountains and cycle up and down pretty valley” with his red hair like a wild wolf child. He competed up to national level in both running and cycling and could have easily gone all the way with those sports. “I was close to choosing cycling” says Jarrah however the ‘saviour’ and only constant was that he had always loved to race the Joey Hoppet since he was five years old. “I loved racing the Joey each year and my results weren’t bad and one year I thought - if I skied a bit

more, I could be pretty good.” So Jarrah did that, and competed in his first World Junior Champs this year in Park City, Utah, USA.Get on some skis and seeHave you got kids who are fit, healthy, and love the outdoors? If you do, then cross country skiing could be the sport that fate decided for them. Exposure is of course the key ingredient and it can be found or introduced in many ways. For the five million children in Australia, only a small percentage will have a chance to discover XC, and we like to think they are the happiest of all.

What is on this weekend? This weekend marks the unofficial start of winter for the cross country trials with a storm of snow blasting the Aussie Alps for the last week. The Snow Trek & Travel High Plains Tour (2.5/5/10km) race is on Saturday and is a must do as it collects great holiday competition and crowds each year. Pray for good weather. On Sunday the YMCA Howman’s Gap VIC Relay Champs are on. For both events, Len Budge is the main man on 0417 352 845. Hope to see you there. • Seve de Campo

Elk @ Falls

Adrenalin, perfectionism, homicide and food! Barry Iddles is back at Elk for his eighth winter at Falls Creek.

Elk has had a little facelift over summer with a lick of paint and notably new unisex toilets that now include wonderful Aesop hand wash. The huge open hearth in the middle of the dining room ensures it is as warm and welcoming as ever. Elk offers a $25 Early Bird special for those who like to dine from 5-6:30pm. Saturdays offering was a T-bone with chips and salad however the menu changes regularly.Barry spends most of his time over summer down on the Mornington Peninsula working his magic in the food business down there. In his years at Falls Barry has made quite an impact, Winterhaven was his base at Falls for four years, expanding to open Elk (the former Julian’s) in 2012.

tireless efforts to provide an outstanding experience. Barry is also a warm and generous individual who enjoys sharing his ideas and helping others to do their best. When designing menus Barry has made an effort to cater for those with intolerance to gluten and other digestive issues. Guided by his own experiences, he makes the most of fresh simple foods and generally avoids relying on too much bread, potato, pasta and other starchy foods. Barry describes the menu at Elk as ‘Snippets from my travels.’ Casting an eye down the list of dishes it would appear that Barry has been spending time everywhere from Morocco to Vietnam. On the night we dined at Elk we chose entrees of Salt & Pepper Calamari, (succulent and not too spicy) and Prawn Potsticker Dumplings (fresh, tasty and yum!). The mains we chose included Grilled Barramundi with Balinese Marinade (served on crisp green beans with herbs and beansprout garnish this

When Barry arrived at Falls Creek his approach to marketing and menu was a breath of fresh air. Many venue operators emulated his approach after tracking his success and the result was a boon for the village as a whole. Barry has been instrumental in events such as the Longest Lunch held in early autumn and the Falls Creek annual Progressive Dinners which encourage the local restaurateur’s to work together once again for the benefit of, not only diners, but everyone involved in the food business locally, including producers. Barry’s enthusiasm, creativity and self-confessed perfectionism are behind his

dish is fabulous) and the less exotic Veal medallions (tasty traditional tucker). We chose a very unlikely side dish; Roasted cauliflower with hummus, raisin and pine nut gremolata. I think this dish really showcases what Barry is doing at Elk. It is the kind of dish I will try and emulate at home, it was so good! I have always been a fan of Barry’s awesome bowls of chips that come with oodles of aioli or jalapeno mayo; these are still on the menu but I felt a million times better eating the cauliflower - who would have thought?Barry has a twin brother 20 minutes older. Ron Iddles is arguably Australia’s most renowned homicide detective with 23 years in Homicide and a 99% conviction rate. Now retired after a lengthy and successful career in the Force, it would be hard to find two siblings with more different and divergent careers. The brothers grew up on a dairy farm in North East Victoria, both developed a strong work ethic and an appreciation of where good food comes from. When it comes to creating menus the question is often posed “What would Uncle Ron eat?” The reason is that the legendary detective enjoys good, wholesome traditional food just like 60-70% of the dining population. Running a successful restaurant depends on giving people what they want.It would be hard to find a harder working guy in the business. Barry left Falls Creek at the end of the season last winter and within a week had opened 360Q down at Queenscliff, conquering the other side of the bay in Melbourne. As a result of his enthusiastic marketing 360Q was packed to the rafters right off the block. Barry

took a seasoned team to this project to get it up and running to ensure that there were as few opening night glitches as possible. His perfectionism and attention to detail is noticeable and combined with the need to be busy and a love of running on adrenalin the results are a win for us all. It is easy to see that Barry has the same attributes that led to his brother Ron being dubbed “Australia’s greatest detective.” I have no doubt that opening and running a restaurant (or several) is every bit as stressful and demanding and all about

As Barry says “my job is harder, Ron deals with dead people while I have to deal with live ones!” More often than not they are hungry, tired and tipsy and his job is to please them all. photo business at Falls Creek. The introduction to ‘The 35mm Photographers Handbook’ by Julian Garrett and John Calder says “The first million photographs were the hardest to take - but we’ve done it…” That was in the print film days. There is every chance that Mike and his team of professionals have achieved a similar milestone -but we’re not sure who’s counting. From the days of print to the digital age and now being able to offer a Virtual Reality package the Top Shots team have continued to develop and grow their quality product.A favourite line of Mike’s is “The business of life is the acquisition of memories!” and that’s the business he and the team are in. They work hard to capture your treasured holiday memories! There are several ways you can take advantage of their service. From the Professionals

What makes a good photo? Well there-in lays a good question. A good photo is a good piece of art.

A good piece of art does not come easy and a good photo usually takes a little more than your happy snap ‘selfie’ on your phone.Composition is critical. You all know the old shot of the family with that telephone pole growing out of dad’s head. Or the group shot with number one daughter looking the other way. Yup, everyone has a phone (with a camera in it), but what gets you the best shots. Background is important. Back-lighting can make your subject dark. And there is another little aspect to taking photos in the snow that takes a little getting used to. It is the incident light. Normally all light comes down (from the sun), but in the snow there is much more incident light - light reflecting from the snow and changing the natural and recognised accepted shadows that we are all used to. Taking your family photo in the snow with your phone may work - but it may not!You have made a fair effort to get to the snow and enjoy the fabulous outdoors. Wouldn’t it be great to go home with at least a couple of super shots for the album - or the website, or the face book page, or the family?Mike Pischetsreider is now going in to his 23rd season of owning and running the Top Shots

Spion Kopje in the background. Here the photographer (on the ground with the orange jacket) will call out a number - and that is your identifier to help find the shot in the shop. Try getting that with a phone!Top Shots will do Park Jumps, family portraits, Snowclub photos, Junior Workshop and all kids’ races. Private Photo Shoots are available. Take out one of the team for a ski/board run or a 20 minute portrait session. A Pro Photography shoot includes 50 plus images on a USB stick for $128. Great value, but bookings are required. You can tell these guys are professional. They have the right gear, the big lenses, the ability to ski and or board and they love looking after people - giving you an extra dimension to your holiday in Falls Creek. They can also compose a photo pretty darn well.Call into the shop in the entrance to Cloud 9 and have a look at some of their fabulous work. - including some shots of our fabulous brumbies on the Bogong High Plains. •

George Calombaris

One claim to fame is that George has collaborated with Qatar Airways as they introduced the new A380

service to Melbourne. People’s taste buds change at 30,000 feet and George was asked to create an impressive in-flight menu featuring his signature Greek inspired dishes.Quoting from a great article in the Restaurant and Catering magazine by Michael Harden, George was awarded Young Achiever of the Year, but could be termed ‘over-achiever of the year.It is refreshing, then, to discover that, despite this level of success over a relatively short space of time, George Calombaris remains remarkably level-headed, someone who does not take any of his achievements for granted and seems to be genuinely enjoying the ride. Every point in his career - both high and the low - is described as “an amazing experience” and his remarkable drive seems to stem from his absolute passion for food and restaurants rather than any ego-driven quest for fame.“My love for food comes from my mother and grandmother, while my attitude and business ideas come from my father,” he says. “With my father it was all about hard work and that is why my brother and sister and I have been successful - because we apply what he taught us to everything we do.”George has done stints on Master Chef, runs a couple of restaurants in Melbourne, another with a mate, and also has one on Mykonos. And, at the time of interview with Michael, was in the midst of completing his second book. Now among this busy schedule George has found some time to visit Falls Creek where he will be hosted by the inimitable Barry Iddles at Elk. As per the detail in the Elk advert, the night is this Sunday, 9th July. Cost of dinner is $60 and bookings are essential. Snow ChainsIt appears that some people are actually driving to Falls Creek and forgetting to get some snow chains for their vehicle before they head up the hill. Now this is not a smart move and we’ll explain why. Snow Chains are vital for safety and grip whenever there is snow and or ice on the road. Those last few mornings we’ve had, there has not been any snow, but lots of ice, black ice that is particularly hard to see. Also, snow chains fitted to a vehicle going down hill in icy conditions will give you more control and grip and all the four wheel drives in the world. The good news is: Victoria Police are planning to run a number of operations in relation to snow chain compliance. These operations will happen even more so when the forecasted snow is arriving. The importance of having and the ability to fit the snow chains cannot be understated. It is not unusual to be required to fit chains in the dark of night, and usually when it is MOTORING TIPS

Drive to the Conditions

That means slow enough to avoid any mishap - like losing your steering because your front wheels lock-up when you put the brakes on - and you slide in to a ditch (at best).Get rid of all the snow from your car - it’s dangerous!Carry chains (for your drive wheels), gloves (for your hands), mat (to kneel on), torch (to see) and knowledge (to know how and when to fit chains).

snowing. What the team in charge want is for motorists to safely find a chain fitting bay (and there are lots) and fit their snow chains before continuing. What we don’t want to find is people that they are stuck in the middle of the road, struggling to fit chains, most likely blocking other traffic and generally causing chaos and potentially an accident. There are some serious penalties for doing the wrong thing. Have a look at these!Disobey information on a road access sign: (fail to carry snow chains). Road Rule 97(1) - $159.00.Fail to obey no entry sign (fail to fit snow chains when directed or sign posted). Road Rule 100 - $317.00 and Three Demerit Points.Alpine Resorts (Management) Regulations. Failing to carry or fit snow chains: $634.00.There you have it folks. Not having snow chains and not fitting them when directed could be quite expensive. THE GOOD OLD DAYSKeeping Warm

In the early days, skiers mainly wore woollen gloves, sometimes they had the luxury of leather but the majority

of skiers wore wool. One of the major issues with this was of course the cold. So how did one keep their fingers and hands warm? In the 1950’s a company called Peacock and Gold brought out a lighter fuel hand-warmer. Today of course, we have disposable hand and foot warmers like the ones pictured, made by XTM.The concept behind the Hand Warmer is that through the combustion (ignition) of lighter fluid (light petroleum distillate) it becomes a catalytic heater, relying on a catalysed

chemical reaction to break down molecules and create heat. They could be re-used by simply refuelling. Typical models were able to generate heat for up to a whole day.The devices could get pretty hot. Not hot enough to set paper on fire, but hot enough to give a nasty burn if sustained contact against your skin occurs. The construction of the device is very simple: there’s a rolled wire mesh (very fine) that fits on top of the reservoir body. After you fill the reservoir with lighter fluid, it sits for a few minutes so the vapour pressure builds up. The device ignites by heating the grill with a match or lighter until it glows red. There is no open flame, and the mesh is not a

wick. Once hot, the device was placed in a little bag and then simply placed into your pocket or into the inside of the glove. In the Falls Creek Museum we have two examples of these lighter warmers that were generously donated to us by Ms Noelene Lee whose mother gave them to here when she came to visit Falls Creek in the early 60’s. Thank you Noelene. If you have any items like this that you think would look great and tell a little bit more of the Falls Creek story please contact the museum at [email protected] or check us out of Facebook. See notice on page two for opening hours. •

ACTIVITIESfantastic ski/snowboard demonstrations, equipment and machinery demonstrations, followed by a fantastic Fireworks display. The Night Show starts at 8pm every Thursday and goes for about 25 minutes before the fireworks kick off. The best spot to enjoy it all from is at the bottom of the Summit outside the Frying Pan. If there is not enough snow to run the full show, the fireworks will still go ahead. Two other events have been mentioned elsewhere in this publication. The first is the Blue Light Disco for kids y to 14 years. This will take place in the Boardroom (above FoodWorks) from 7pm until 10pm on Friday 14th July. The other is the Telluride Mountainfilm On Tour which will take place in the QT Function Room on Sunday 30th July. The Falls User Guide, which can be downloaded to your phone, has a brilliant new feature - The Arts and Heritage Trail. There are six points around the village of interest and as you visit each one, you will learn more about this wonderful community and its heritage. It starts and finishes at the Falls Creek Museum - a great place to spend a few hours.

More Fun For All

OK, at the time of going to press, there have been many terms bandied about as to how much,

where, when and by whom. We know our snow-makers are working their little butts off, and He who must be obeyed is trying his darndest - and that’s the reality of it. What we can do is be thankful for what we have, be respectful of each - especially in the queues - and enjoy the crystal clear fresh air and the wonderful environment. The Twilight Tuesday is a fun family affair in the Village Bowl. From about 3:30pm until around 5:30pm, the Village Bowl will be the centre of entertainment. Street Stalls, Pete the Snow Dragon, Fire Pits, toasted marshmallows, games for the kids and the occasional beer tasting (for the big kids) is all part of the fun.Keep your ears posted because this may also go ahead on the Thursday - prior to the night show.Renault Night ShowThe fabulous Falls Creek Summit Renault Night Show has pulled in the crowds for many years now - displaying many of the resort’s talents through

Now, what else is there to do?The Activities Desk in Falls Creek Sports in the Village Bowl is a good spot to check in with while you’re here. The guys and gals can you give you info on the latest activities or you can explore the list on the back of the pocket sized Trail Map you should all be carrying. •

PROPERTY OF THE WEEK

16 Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK Winter 2017 Edition FIVE

As an all-year-round resort and holiday destination, Falls Creek has a lot to offer. World class mountain bike trails have been constructed in the resort and more will be opened up in the next couple of years. This has led to lots of fun for locals and adds amenity and attraction for visitors. We then have the fully sealed Bogong High Plains Road giving access to the fabulous high plains, the Mitta Valley on the other side - including the Blue Duck and Payne’s Hut.A comprehensive suite of events makes summer in Falls Creek a nice time to be here. The Dragon Boat festival; the Alpine Challenge; the Peaks Challenge Falls Creek and the World’s Longest Lunch are highlights of the summer - as are the 12°C cooler temperatures on those stinking 40°C summer days in the city.Zali is sold walk in walk out, has a good rental history and is well priced. Phone the agent to arrange and inspection today. Christa at Zirky Real Estate, Mb: 0402 277 808. •
