“Around and About in Harbor Club”by Judy Stultz
The New Year brought us one of the coldest weeks in Georgia’s recent history. Snow, sleet, ice, frigid tem-peratures and treacherous roads kept many Harbor Club residents housebound for a week in January. World Travelers abound here in Harbor Club at any time of the year ~ but this winter they seemed to have left in droves ~ Janie and Bob Legg are forever cruising ~ from Auckland, New Zealand to San Francisco in De-cember, then to Tahiti and the French Polynesia Islands in January and off again in March to cruise from the US East coast to Bermuda and Barcelona. Leigh Lofgren spent the New Year celebrating with her father in Sydney, reveling in Australia’s summer climate. Perfect timing for Wendy and Pete Foster as they headed for sunny days and balmy nights in Costa Rica and Hawaii. Rita and Walter Jones cruised for a month, sailing to ports in Chili, Argentina and Brazil. Getting away from blustery February, Linda and Steve Weiser and shipmates Kay and Tony Dejno set sail for the Bahamas, with stops in Aruba, Curacao, Panama and Costa Rica. Another cruising couple, Peggy and Dave Borchelt took a 14 day journey through New Zealand and Australia in March ~ visiting fascinating ports of call along the way. Lynda Grant joined Vicki Hall in March, trekking all the way to Cambodia to visit Vicki’s daughter, Taylor, who is serving in the Peace Corps there. Lynda, the Ultimate Travel Maven, stayed on to tour Vietnam and Thailand. Bright spots in the winter landscape ~ the Valentine’s Dinner Dance and Saint Patrick’s Day Celebration at the Troutdale gave us a reprieve from the post holiday blues. HCLL On the Go. Future artists prepared for their craft with a course at the “Splash of Paint” in February. A visit to Scott’s Antique Mall in Atlanta in March was a chance to haggle, buy or just people watch. A St. Augus-tine three-day getaway in April will give the ladies a chance to tour, dine, shop and get in some beach time. Kudos to our multi-talented artist, Leigh Lofgren, who won honors in her first Photography Show by taking first prize in Wildlife and in Humor and 2nd prize in Flowers. Our own Diane Gburek was a featured player in the Plaza Arts Center presentation of “12 Angry Jurors” in March. Harbor Club fans cheered her on at the Sunday matinee. Congratulations to the HC Outreach Committee ~ their “Guys & Gals” Card/Game Party raised over $2,000.00 for local charities. Those hardy souls of the HCMGA ~ bundled in parkas and gloves ~ to trudge the course this winter. Should be sunny skies as they host their Member/Guest Tournament in May. Wet weather awaited the Harbor Club LGA’s season kickoff on March 31st. 2011 officers, Val Ledyard President), Marie Madsen (Tournament Chair), Kathy Kurelic (Play Day Chair) and Carol Gordon (Treasurer) are looking for perfect spring weather for their Member/Guest Tournament in May. Something new ~ The Camera Club ~ headed up by Leigh Lofgren and Jack Ledyard held their inaugural meeting in March with 14 interested photographers in attendance ~ they’ll meet every fourth Tuesday of the month. Field trips and speakers are being considered. The Fifth Annual Harbor Club MGA Memorial Scholarship Tournament is set for June 11th. This event will honor the memories of past MGA members by awarding scholarships to deserving high school golfers in the Tri-County area. Be sure to sign your team up early.
Spring is here with summer soon to follow ~ time to be out and about ~ enjoy the season!

Harbor Club Ladies Party Bridge Group welcomes all interested players for fun and fellowship. The group meets in the Oconee Room at the HC Clubhouse at 10 AM, and meet regularly on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Harbor Club Tennis NewsThe LOTA Ladies League is back for the Spring season from Saturday March 12 through to May 4 and both courts will be used every Saturday from 9am until noon at Harbor Club. Please remember to check the standing reservations sheet located inside the glass cabinet by the courts and use the sign up sheet to book a court and time for casual play at times not already reserved. Please do NOT take the balls from the score posts and report any mis-use of the courts to HC Security or Administration. Racquet stringing, contact HC resident Steve Weiser on 706-453-0799. Soothing Touch Body Work“Soothing Touch Body Work” sessions are now being offered to the Members of Harbor Club by Diane Gburek. A “Sooth-ing Touch Body Work” consists of various massage techniques to relax and restore tired and sore muscles, ease lower back pain, stimulate blood flow, reduce stiffness in the neck and shoulders, and bring out a general sense of calm and well being. Di-ane delivers her sessions in a highly professional manner, applying the standards of massage draping and privacy during the client’s experience . The “Soothing Touch Body Work” is delivered in an environment accompanied by peaceful music, low lighting, and delightful scents.

Summer Water AerobicsDeep Water Aerobics will begin June 1st. Regular sessions take place every Monday, Wednes-day and Friday at 8:30a.m. Participants must provide their own equipment: a water buoyan-cy belt, water barbells and a noodle, kickboards are optional. There is a fee of $5 per session. Participants can obtain a discount by paying in advance. Call Millicent Zamirowski 706 207 4731 for more information.
Swimming Lessons Stacy Hall has 20 years experience in teaching swim. Classes are available for beginners to advance swimmers. If you are interested in signing up a child, please call 706-453-1381.

Harbor Club Camera Club Following an idea that formed earlier this year and after discussion with my co –conspirator Jack Ledyard, we are forming our very own Camera/Photo Club within Harbor Club.This is open to anyone interested in photography and would cover a wide range of topics, discus-sions, ideas, tips etc. The group will meet on the last Tuesday of every month. Our first meeting was held on Tuesday, March 8th. During this meeting we discussed organizations, publications , websites and software for photography and cameras. The idea for the group is to bring in experts periodically, have our photographs exhibited within the clubhouse, take field trips to various locations, and get together occasionally with the photo club in Eatonton. Harbor Club Men’s Golf AssociationJanuary eighth was the start of the 2011 MGA year. We kicked off with our annual awards night and installation of new officers. A great time was had by participating members and their wives.
On January 29th we had 42 members play in the inaugural Red Ball tournament. The purse was $420.00 with the following team winners.

On February 5th a good group of Harbor Club members gathered at the Clubhouse for the Chili tasting. There were seven entries of original recipe chili. Each one was excellent by itself. The Judges from Troutdale consisted of Rob, Darrin and Anthony. FROM THE PRO SHOP…There will be new spring merchandise arriving in April and May from Adidas, Antiqua, Ashworth, Tehama, and Izod G. Also, we have added ALOE SUN CARE PRODUCTS to the shop.
For those looking for game improvement equipment, we have new DEMO clubs available to evaluate. Our annual DEMO DAY is scheduled for Saturday, April 16, 2011, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. The vendors scheduled to appear are Bridgestone, Cleveland, Cobra, and Titleist.
The 2011 MEMBER/GUEST is rapidly filling up. As of print time, we have 40 teams registered to play. This pre-mier event is set for May 12-14, 2011.
“Get Golf Ready” clinics are on Wednesdays at 11:00 -12:30 pm, and Saturdays at 3:00 – 4:30 pm, for those players wanting to brush up on the fundamentals and improve their techniques. The clinics are $ 15/player; and, you can call the Pro Shop to sign up at 706-453-4414.

FROM THE LESSON TEE… …“Cash in Your Chips”
Good chipping is as much about preparation as it is technique; which is why I view most greenside chips like I do putts. Before, I settle on a plan of attack, I evaluate several factors--my lie; how much green I have to work with; and the slope and speed of the green. The most critical assessment is the lie. Whether the ball is sitting up or nestled down in the rough, or on an uphill or downhill slope, determines how I will play the shot.
BALL SITTING UP: LET IT RUN.• Move your hands forward of the ball to ensure crisp contact and a low, running shot.• Swing the club back with your arms and shoulders—no wrists—as if you’re hitting a long putt.
BALL SITTING DOWN: POP IT UP.• Open the clubface and move your hands, even with the ball. This will create more loft.• Hinge your wrists to promote a steeper angle of approach and more clubhead speed.

“Divots”Recently many members have had questions regarding divots. The term “Divot” is defined in two ways. The first is turf that is removed during the golf shot, second being the indention left after the shot. Now the question is “how do we properly fill the divot”. The answer lies at your club’s preference. Bentgrass fairways require that the turf displaced must fill the divot. At other clubs a mixture of seed and sand will suffice. For Bermuda grass, sand is required due to the lateral growth of the grass. The amount of sand should be parallel to the grass. If it is a little below parallel it is fine. It should never be over parallel and can cause damage to mowers and the mower blades. We appreciate your continued support and help in maintaining our course. As always please fix you ball marks and observe the cart path rulings for the day.

Security News…The Security team invites all of our residents and visitors to slow down and enjoy the spring colors. Harbor Club is spectacular during this time of the year. Please remember the speed limit is 35 mph on main roads.Deer are being seen often and with increasing numbers. Please be careful around our four legged friends. We have had several close calls and one accident. The new fawns will be born in April and May.Please remember to call security at (706) 453-0931 and inform them when you have service people, house sitters, pet sitters or visitors coming to Harbor Club. The security guard cannot let anyone through the gate without being noti-fied by the property owner. All Guests must stop at the security gate to get a pass. Anyone allowing visitors or con-tractors to use the back gate will have the use of the back gate terminated. The back gate has multiple cameras record-ing and monitoring all vehicles that enter or leave Harbor Club via the back gate. Please accompany your guest if they are using the tennis courts. Ya’ll be safe, enjoy the spring colors.
