COMMODORE’S
COMMENTS
Ahoy fellow Club Members,
Last week I was shocked to open my mail and find a letter addressed to someone referred to as Commodore Fortune. At first I thought it was from my Mother, as she has started calling me that after I sent her the Anchorline with my pic-ture in the cover (Thanks a lot, Gene!). Lo and behold, the letter wasn’t from Mom, it was from the Commodore of the New York Yacht Club. Yes, the New York Yacht Club.
I am delighted to announce that we are again one of only 30 clubs invited to send a team to compete in the NYYC Resolute Cup Regatta next September. No doubt, our intrepid team of Sean Clare, Steve Lemay, Mike Osborne and Anthony Passafiume made a bigger impression than they thought. Nice going, guys. More on that as it develops.
It got me to thinking. The NYYC has had a board and members consisting of big time bankers and financiers; giant law firm partners; national newspaper and magazine publishers; mayors, governors, senators, generals and presidential cabinet members. Here at Harbor Island, in our boardroom you’ll find chaplains, salesmen, mechanics and teachers, among others. In New York and at their Newport Station, they have a large staff – here we have a dedicated group of people who embrace a DIY philosophy. What makes us really special is – I believe, our volunteer spirit.
Next time you’re in the Clubhouse, notice that it’s clean and stocked. A volunteer leads that, yes; but, many take it upon themselves without being asked. When a boat breaks from a mooring ball, we don’t call the Coast Guard – mem-bers jump in to handle the rescue. If something’s broken, our last resort is to call a repair service – the first folks we go to are the many handymen and people who know one end of a screwdriver from the other. Yes, it’s the water and sail-ing that bring us together; but, it’s this caring and working freely for the Club that keeps us together.
And, the next big togetherness will be the March Winds Regatta on the 5th. Then the Spring Cleanup Day on the 12th followed by the Cully Cobb 50k on the 26th. April is also a big month, starting on the 2nd with the Bilge Sale benefiting the Sea Scouts and the Nashville Sailing Foundation, our sister organization that operates the Sail Camp; followed by the OL Schulz Alive Hospice events starting the 8th with the Splash Party and continuing the following two weekends with racing. Boy, I can’t wait for the weather to turn and for March to get here!
See you at the Club,

2016 Sail Camp Registration Information
HIYC at Cool Springs Galleria—Getting Ready for Sail Camp These four Sail Camp counselors - from the left Fred Crumbo, Ella Cameron, Jesse Leuz-inger and Peter O’Brien have worked at Sail Camp for several summers. A few weeks ago, they helped Nashville Sailing Foundation Board Members Nelson Miller and Marc Fortune staff a booth at the Summer Camp Fair in Cool Springs. Among the 60 camps recruiting summer campers, ours was the only one dedicated exclusively to sailing. Many visitors were surprised to learn that there was any sailing in Nashville, much less a Club with a dedicated month of sailing instruction for kids.
This year the day camp begins the week of June 6 and will operate Monday through Fri-day for four weeks. Even if you don’t have little ones enrolled, stop by around 5:00 on those four Fridays to see each camper receive their specially named award as well as any ribbons they’ve earned by winning some of the races the counselors put on. If you do have your own aspiring sailors between 7 and 14 years old, sign them up and get them on the water. It’s never too early. Registration can be accessed through the Club website or found on this link: http://www.nashvillesailingfoundation.org/
“We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails”
—National Hospice Regatta Alliance
The O. L. Shultz Regatta benefitting Alive Hospice began a new tradition at HIYC in 2014. HIYC partnered with a Middle Tennessee non-profit organization, Alive Hospice, which helps patients and families embrace life and focus on moments with the people they love, and also served the family of beloved past HIYC Commodore O. L. Shultz (1978)
We became part of a national organization, The National Hospice Regatta Alliance, which directs Regattas to raise money and awareness for local hospices from East coast to West Coast, and Canada. HIYC and Alive Hospice both took a leap of faith to rename the former Tennessean Regatta, create new events and fundraisers, and establish a true community and sailing fellowship—true to the Corinthian Spirit.
The O.L. Shultz Regatta now kicks off with a fun night of food, dancing, and silent auction at the Splash Party, draws more than 65 sailors for two weekends of racing, and has raised close to $100,000 for Alive Hospice, which also offers community grief support and provides services regardless of ability to pay.

“O.L. and Elsie shared a major life interest in sailing, both at Harbor Island Yacht Club and in the islands of the Carib-bean. Anne and I joined them on their sloop, Respite, for the Hundred Mile Race on Kentucky Lake many years ago, and over twenty-seven years later, we still have pleasant memories of that adventure” Fred Beesley, HIYC Treas. The Warterfield March Winds Regatta March 5, 2016
Complete Notice of Race available Online
INVITATION - Harbor Island Yacht Club cordially invites you and your crew to attend the Warterfield March Winds, March 7, 2015, on Old Hickory Lake in Old Hickory, TN.
HISTORY - The Warterfield March Winds Regatta, held on the first full weekend in March, bears the name of Charley Warterfield who died unexpectedly in December, 1998. This remarkably talented architect and sailor served as our Commodore in 1983. Bob Cotton followed Charley as Commodore in 1984. Together, they reflected on the fact that our club had no organized sailing event during the very month of the year most noted for wind. The Board of Governors responded favorably to their proposal to establish the March Winds Regatta as a permanent cruising class sailing event to be held as a two day regatta early in March. Since the inaugural March Winds Regatta (won by Chuck Konesky), the tradition has continued that the retiring commodore take responsibility for serving as regatta chairman for the event.
SAILING INSTRUCTIONS - The Sailing Instructions will be available at registration. A draft is available at www.hiyc.org.

INVITATION - Harbor Island Yacht Club cordially invites you and your crew to attend the , March 26,2016 on Old Hickory Lake in Old Hickory, TN.
HISTORY – In 1999, HIYC members decided to honor Dr. Cully Cobb; one of the founding members of the club. Throughout Cully’s many successful regattas through the years, he continued to be a perfect example of what we at HIYC strive for and hold as the true Corinthian spirit of our Club’s Mission. He served this club and the community in so many ways, it is impossible to list them. Dr. Cobb was also one of the most successful racers nationally in Lightnings as well as in other dinghy classes. Locally, he enjoyed many successful outings in his beloved Swiftsure 33, ”Chloe.” Come out and race! Share in the honor of his memory by participating in the Cully Cobb 50K!

I grew up in Kingwood, TX and was first introduced to sailing through Sea Scouts. I was instantly hooked. When I moved to Evansville, IN in high school I continued to pursue sailing through Sea Scouts and would sail on KY lake on a S2 7.9. After high school I went on to Indiana University and joined their club sailing team. We did some competing on 420s on the great lakes. I then took a brief 2 year hiatus from sailing and went to the University of Missouri to pursue my Masters of Education in Counseling Psychology. I have been living in Nashville for a year and half working for MNPS as an elementary school counselor and have been sailing with the V15s. I am excited to become more involved in big boat sailing at HIYC!

Marshall Burstein is originally from Philadelphia. Marshall moved to
middle Tennessee (Warren County) approximately four years ago for
his career. Now, he is moving closer to Nashville. Marshall is an ad‐
venturer and he enjoys spending his weekends at the lake. Marshall is looking forward to
making sailing a recreational hobby and, of course, learning the ropes. Marshall has trav‐
eled to 33 states and would like to cross the other 17 off his bucket list. Marshall is not a
stranger to water as he has experience water skiing and wakeboarding.
