PELLA, IOWA — Vermeer Corporationcompletes its family of mini skid steerswith the addition of the S450TX. Thenewest member of the Vermeer® miniskid steer family is well suited for rentalcustomers, as well as landscapers andgeneral contractors who need a compactmachine that can perform varioustasks. With its ability to accommodate awide range of attachments, the S450TXis one of the most versatile machines acontractor can have.

A 500-pound SAE rated operating ca-pacity with a 1,430-pound tipping ca-pacity gives the S450TX a lot of musclefor its size. Vermeer has incorporated afour pump hydraulic system, whichprovides performance and efficiencywhen powering attachments. A singlepilot operated joystick is now integratedinto the S450TX platform, which makesthe machine easy to maneuver and op-erate in comparison to manual controlsystems.. The operator can also experi-ence a smooth range of operation with-out having to balance the engagementof two separate controls.

The S450TX offers the customer theability to customize the machine withthe choice of engine and track options.A Kubota 24.8 hp diesel engine pro-vides excellent torque performance de-signed for those who use attachmentsrequiring greater engine torque. A

Kohler EFI 27 hp gas engine will beavailable later this year. The EFI enginehas a number of benefits, such as low-er fuel consumption, easier mainte-nance, improved starting due to theelimination of the choke and cleaneremissions. A narrow 7-inch track pro-vides a smaller machine footprint fortight work areas, such as landscapingapplications and residential construc-tion. The standard 9-inch wide track of-fers reduced ground pressure for in-creased flotation and stability.

The S450TX is designed with a springcushioned platform that keeps opera-tors out of the mud and debris. Theplatform features cushioning on thefront and side for additional supportwhen working in rough terrain. An op-erator presence system suspendsground drive and attachment motion ifthe operator steps off the machine. LEDlighting for warning lights offers excel-lent visibility and longevity. With a rearpanel and side shields for greater serv-ice access, S450TX operators are of-fered quicker maintenance and lessdowntime on the jobsite.

by Jon M. CaseyIt won’t be long before one of Amsterdam, New

York’s more prominent reminders of times past, willbe gone forever and a grass covered, empty lot willtake its place. Amsterdam’s Chalmers Knitting Milldemolition and site restoration project is scheduledfor completion by early spring. With the final demoli-tion work currently underway, the workers fromRitter & Paratore Contracting, Inc. will soon be ableto say, “Another job well done!”

According to Site Superintendant, Steve Brooks, the challenges of taking down the Chalmers Mill havebeen routine for the most part, but have offeredinteresting insights into the construction methodsfrom a bygone era. Chalmers Mill, having been builtover several years during the early 1900s, was pri-marily composed of two structures, an older brickfacility and a newer, larger concrete building thattowered seven stories above the nearby MohawkRiver.

The project was awarded on Jan. 4, 2011, and aftersome initial, unforeseen delay, the work began June1, 2011. Brooks said that the first priority at the sitewas to take care of the hazardous waste abatementand soil remediation that goes along with the demoli-tion of older buildings of this kind.

“We had MCES Environmental remove two existing20,000 gallon fuel tanks and our sister company,Midlantic Environmental, Inc. did the asbestos andlead abatement for us,” he said. “Once those twophases of the project were done, we have been pro-ceeding at a very good pace.”

The removal of the hardwood flooring has beenespecially interesting, primarily because of itsstrength and durability over the years. Brooks saidthat in order for the crews to effectively remove the4-inch thick, heavy wooden material, they needed tolift a skid steer loader up to each floor with a crane,so that as crews would remove the boards from theinterior framework. Once the material was loosenedinside the building, the loader could safely take it toan exterior wall opening for stockpiling at ground

As work began, the historic Chalmers Mill in Amsterdam, NY showed the signs that more than 20 years of vacancy and neglect brought.

level below. After the wood was stockpiled, it was ground into

cover fill material for Ontario Landfill. Brooksestimates that there was about 3500 tons of wooddebris recycled as a part of this project.

Amsterdam City Engineer, Richard Miller, said he isextremely pleased with the progress that Ritter &Paratore Contracting, Inc. has made since the projectbegan. He said that because of the mild winter, anydelays that might have been encountered along theway have been made up, and little in the way of aproblem.

“We are very close to being on target with our com-

pletion date,” he said in a recent phone interview. “Wehave enjoyed working with the companies that havebeen taking part in this project.” In addition to Ritter& Paratore Contracting, C.T. Male Engineering andSaratoga Associates have worked well together toprovide engineering, testing and air monitoringthroughout the entire project.

Miller said that there are currently no plans for anew structure at this location. He said that when thedemolition and backfilling is complete, a layer oftopsoil will cover the site and grass will be planted asa cover. He noted that the concrete material takenfrom the structure, will be ground and used as a 6-

inch minus fill material to bring the site up to grade. At it’s highest point, the top of the building’s eleva-

tor shaft, Chalmers Mill stood 109-feet tall. Rooftoplevel was at 94-feet. Nevertheless, with Ritter &Paratore’s Komatsu PC600 excavator, outfitted with aconcrete shear attachment at the end of its 105-foothigh reach boom, the demolition crew has no trouble“nibbling” away at the upper floors of the structure ona daily basis. Within a few weeks, the mill that onceemployed more than 600 workers, who manufacturedlong underwear and other similar garments duringthe first and second World Wars, will soon be nomore. Scheduled completion for the project is some-time in early to mid-spring.

Brooks said that Ritter & Paratore Contracting, Inc.has come to specialize in projects of this kind duringtheir 30 years of doing business. New remote operated Creep Drive al-lows operators to control the Stone

Slinger and maneuver the truckfrom outside the cab.

MISSISSAUGA, ON — W.K. DahmsMfg. Ltd. has successfully launched anew generation of remote controls forStone Slinger truck conveyors that candramatically reduce the time to unloadand place aggregate loads with precision.

The new Stone Slinger™ Creep Drivesystem provides operators with a re-mote control feature that not only con-trols the speed and direction of the con-veyor, but allows the operator to re-motely maneuver the truck itselfaround the jobsite. The operator now

has a single set of controls to run theconveyor and reposition the truck forideal placement of the material, withoutreturning to the truck. The truck andthe Stone Slinger become a fully inte-grated material delivery system.

Scott Nelson, manager of W.K.Dahms, reports that the first of the newStone Slingers equipped with Creep Dri-ve was delivered at the end of August toJohn Da Silva of Rock Concrete Form-ing Ltd. in Mississauga, Ontario. Afterputting the Stone Slinger through itspaces for a full season, Da Silva says, “IfI was buying another truck, I wouldn’tget anything else — no question!”

According to Da Silva, his investment

in the Creep Drive feature has paid offwell. “On a typical weeping tile job, thedriver has to go back and forth to movethe truck four or five times. And, eachtime, when you get into the truck, youhave to turn the PTO off, drive thetruck, put the air brakes on again andrestart the PTO. It’s the time saving thatpays you back.”

The right place to beBy using the remote control to move

the truck, the operator remains outsidethe cab to keep the material flowing un-til the load is completely delivered. DaSilva says that getting out of the truckis the right place for operators to be.

Hey Fred -We are a contractor

who is looking to out-source our payroll. I’velooked at the big guys, but they don’t addresscertain issues like multi-ple states and localitiesand certified payroll re-porting. Isn’t there any-thing out there just forour industry?

- Scott

Hey Scott-Good news — payroll

services geared specifi-cally toward the con-struction industry DOexist, and can substan-tially simplify your pay-roll. All payroll servicescan handle basic payrollprocessing tasks likechecks, direct deposit, tax filing and W2s. But

construction specificservices can handle thenuances of processingconstruction payroll.

How do you find a pay-roll provider that catersto construction? Start byGoogling related termslike “construction payrollservice” or “payroll forconstruction.” Once youfind providers, look to seeif they can provide thefollowing items:

• Multiple states andlocalities, multiple jobsand pay rates. Construc-tion specific payroll serv-ices are able to calculate

payroll for employeesworking in multiplestates and localities, onmultiple jobs with multi-ple pay rates — all in thesame period.

• Construction report-ing. Reports are usefuland necessary tools inhelping contractors man-age their jobs better, and agood construction specificpayroll service will createthese reports for you —sometimes even for free! Some of these reports in-clude: Certified Payroll,New Hire, EEO MinorityCompliance, Job HistoryDetail, Workers’ Compen-

ROCKLAND, ME — Tocelebrate the plowing in-dustry in Maine, FisherEngineering recentlygave snow plow opera-

tors the opportunity towin a custom painted“Plow Maine” FISHER®XtremeVT snow plow.

Walter Gogan of Levant,

Maine, is the winner.Gogan is the owner ofWalt’s Lawn Care, a land-scaping and snow removalcompany that plows both

residential and commer-cial accounts.

Upon hearing the newsthat he had won theplow, Gogan was ecstat-

ic. “I could hardly believeit, at first! I love it!”Gogan exclaims. “I’ve al-ways been a FISHER guyand I’ve really wanted asecond plow, so winningthis was unbelievable!”

The “Plow Maine”XtremeV is Gogan’s firstV-plow. On making theswitch from a straightblade to a V-plow, Gogansays, “I’ve always likedmy nine foot FISHERstraight blade, but nowthat I have a vee, I canonly see myself buyingvees for now on.”

As for the custom “PlowMaine” paint job, Gogansays, “It took some get-ting used to at first, butonly because I’ve alwaysbeen partial to FISHERyellow. But going downthe road, man, a lot ofpeople stop and stare atthis plow!”

“You get out here and you can see every-thing. We are always working in verytight spaces. You can watch the wheelsand the ground more closely than ifyou’re steering from the cab. You won’tever put the truck into a pothole or aditch, so you never have to wait for an-other truck to come and pull you out!”

The Stone Slinger Creep Drive adds acomplete hydrostatic drive system to thestandard powertrain of the truck. A hy-draulic driven gearbox is inserted into

the driveline. A CAN Bus panel controlsall hydraulic and operating functionsand communicates with the remote, which the operator carries in a sling.

Jobsite safety designed in Nelson explains that safety was a key

factor in Dahms’ design of the system.“The maximum speed the truck canachieve under hydraulic power is 2.5km/h — a comfortable walking speed.

The heart of the Creep Drive system is this CAN Bus panel which controls the hy-draulic drive system and communicates with the operator's remote control console.

The control circuitry re-ceives constant feedbackon the actual wheel speed

from the truck. If thetruck’s on an incline, thehydraulics will brake its

speed automatically. Sev-eral fail safes are built inas well. If the wheel speedexceeds 4 km/h, the CANBus will shut down andstop the truck completely.”

Lower costs, better results

Da Silva finds that theCreep Drive leads to betterjob quality, too, with lesswasted material. Operatorsnaturally tend to avoid ex-tra walks back to the truckif they possibly can. Bymaking it easy to move thetruck into the best loca-tion, Creep Drive helps op-erators to distribute thematerial more preciselyand consistently with no

Gift from Upstate Shredding — BenWeitsman is largest the organization

has received from private party to date

The disastrous floods of September2011 have left far reaching scars on theentire community of Tioga County, NewYork. The floodwaters ravaged propertyand possessions, closed public build-ings, damaged private homes andcaused millions of dollars in loss.

To help one vital community organi-

zation rebuild, Upstate Shredding —Ben Weitsman donated $35,000 to theBoys and Girls Club of Tioga County.

“This organization provides a valu-able safe haven to the children of ourcommunity,” said Adam Weitsman, president of the company, who wasjoined by his wife Kim in making thedonation. “It is important that they beable to continue their important mis-sion, offering positive programs and a

safe place to congregate after schoolfor our children.”

“Adam Weitsman’s grandfather start-ed the Boys and Girls in 1945 as a placeof sanctity for boys. Since Mr. Weitsmanfirst brought his vision to life, the Clubhas grown to include not only boys, butgirls, adults and senior citizens,” saidVal Demkovich, executive director of theTioga County Boys and Girls Club. “It istruly a family center and is a staple of

the Tioga County Community. I speakon behalf of the Club members, myBoard of Directors and myself when Isay that we are truly and sincerelygrateful to Adam and Kim for makingsuch an outstanding contribution to theClub. The Club today still provides thesanctity that Ben Weitsman envisionedall those years ago for many youth inthe County.”

Since the floods, theClub has seen a signifi-cant increase in de-mand for its services, the director said, withas many as 65 youngpeople taking advantageof its afterschool pro-grams each night.

During the flood, Up-state Shredding — BenWeitsman donated$100,000 to help provideimmediate relief to peoplein the community, pro-viding food, fresh water, shelter and other necessi-ties. After the flood waterreceded, Upstate Shred-ding — Ben Weitsmanopened its yards to ac-cept all waste materials,at no cost, gathered dur-ing cleanup, not just re-cyclable metal, from thebattered community.

Demkovich said the do-nation is the largest pri-vate donation ever re-ceived to date by the or-ganization, and is likelygoing to be one of themost significant sourcesof income for the club in2012. State funding andother foundation fundinghas suffered, with the or-ganization expecting toreceive half of the fundingit had received in 2010from organizations likethe United Way and theOffice of Justice. Thefloods compounded thisproblem — not only didthe organization suffer aloss of $20,000 in proper-ty when a shed was de-stroyed, but the OwegoAppalachian ElementarySchool, where the Boysand Girls Club operatedits “Club Positive SchoolAge program” has closed.Club Positive is the orga-nization’s New York Statelicensed child care pro-gram and a significantsource of income for the

Boys and Girls Club.

Now, the group is look-ing for a new home for theprogram, or will have toconduct costly renova-tions to its building toachieve state compliance.

“The Office of Childrenand Family Services hasbeen very generous inworking with us howev-er, it is necessary for usto either renovate ourbuilding to meet re-quirements,” saidDemkovich. “Club Posi-tive is the only regular, weekly source of rev-enue for the Club andclosing would signifi-cantly impact our abilityto continue operationsof the Club in its entire-ty. Our only option ap-pears to be to make ren-ovations to the Club tomeet requirements forpermanent licensing. The Club is old, and therenovations will be cost-ly, money the Club sim-ply does not have. Thepossibility of losing ourchild care program hasbeen very real and it’simpending inevitablyhas loomed above ussince September.”

The donation receivedfrom Upstate Shredding— Ben Weitsman “will goto sustaining the Clubthrough making theneeded renovations forClub Positive and/orfilling the gap in our2012 budget and settingthe Club on stronger fi-nancial ground,”Demkovich said.
