New solutions for wood furniture and fl ooring

In our modern society, we are both replacing furniture more often and asking new questions of manufacturers. Aesthetics and appearance are always important, but so are environmental and sustainability considerations such as VOC-free and solvent-free preparations as well as clean-air emissions. At the same time, different tastes and styles in different regions of the world dictate that an ever-increasing choice of coatings is required. BASF offers a complete range of dyes, preparations and high-performance pigments that allow manufacturers to creatively meet fast-changing design trends while also complying with tougher environmental regulations. Our solutions include bright, durable and fade-resistant colorants that require fewer layers and which or suitable for the latest rapid energy-curing technologies.

High-performance solutions for laminates

BASF pigments and pigments preparations are also commonly found in many different laminate surfaces around the home or offi ce. They provide high color strength, excellent light and weather fastness and good heat stability. These products are also highly compatible with the main raw materials used in formulations of laminate inks and offer good bleeding resistance and low foaming properties, helping to optimize production processes.

In this industry segment, high durability, cost saving and effi ciency are as important as aesthetics. Our pigments and pigments preparations cover the full color space and are used to create the hard-wearing, brilliant and long-lasting colors and effects that today’s consumers are demanding. PVC inks for fl ooring applications

As well as for laminates, BASF also has a broad portfolio for pigments for the formulation of inks applied to PVC substrates. The pigments from the Cinquasia®, Paliotol®, Cromophtal®, Irgazin®, Paliogen® and Heliogen® ranges provide an extensive option of colors, covering the color space and impart light and weather resistance. BASF’s Microlith® pigment preparation range is especially suitable for formulating inks for PVC fl oors. They include organic and inorganic pigments encapsulated in a resin carrier in a very small particle size, very easy to incorporate during the ink manufacturing process (no pigment grinding required), making them highly suitable for water- or solvent-based and UV-curable PVC inks.

Versatility meets durability

Our state-of-the-art Microlith® pigment preparations are present in many of the latest wood coatings, adding desirable aesthetic qualities with high durability. When used with natural wood, their high transparency allows the beauty of the material to shine through while their excellent durability keeps furniture and fl ooring looking good for longer.At the production level, these stir-in products are very easy to disperse, contain no VOC and are easy to handle. In their solvent-grade versions, they offer compatibility with a large proportion of the solvents commonly used for wood coatings and inks for PVC fl oors.

BASF has been pioneering environmentally friendly products and production processes for many years. Our current product ranges meet all existing environmental legislation and have suffi cient safety margins built in to allow for tighter regulations in the future.

As environmental considerations continue to increase in prominence, we have responded by creating high-quality products that meet the new regulations without compromising performance. For example, our label-free Luconyl® NG and Xfast® ranges are both VOC- and APEO-free while also

conforming to the GHS 2015 standard. Xfast® pigments are totally solvent-free, free-fl owing, low-dusting and almost entirely waste-free with no residue left behind in the packaging. Both ranges have an optimized pigment concentration to meet market requirements.

We are also developing technologies with clean ecotox profi les and extending our search for sustainable and renewable raw materials right through the supply chain. To further reduce the use of VOC, we are developing new solutions that will increasingly replace our solvent-based coatings with environmentally friendly technologies such

as water-based or energy-curable coatings. BASF’s latest advances in water-based coatings for wooden substrates improve color fastness and increase durability while extending their life cycle and reducing their carbon footprint. We have also succeeded in closing the performance gap between water- and solvent-based formulations.

BASF offers an unparalleled variety of pigments, dyes and pigment preparations including organic, inorganic and effect pigments, which cover the full color space and also offer a range of environmentally friendly formulations.

Pigments

Among BASF’s extensive pigment range, our Cromophtal® high-grade organic pigments show very good resistance to light, heat, solvents and chemicals and the portfolio comprises many color shades. Therefore, Cromophtal® pigments are suitable for numerous applications including water-based, solvent-based and energy-curable coatings and inks for laminates and PVC. Heliogen® phthalocyanine blue and green pigments offer extremely good color fastness and resistance to weathering and are especially suitable for use in all types of wood coatings and inks for laminates and PVC. With the exception of Heliogen® Blue L 7460, which is metal-free, all Heliogen® pigments are made from copper phthalocyanine. Irgazin® high-performance organic pigments are created from selected chemical classes with a broad range of colors and are ideal for applications where resistance to extreme conditions and/or excellent coloristic and tinctorial properties with high transparency are required.

Dyes

BASF’s Orasol® dyes are metal complex dyes, soluble in organic solvents and exhibiting good all-round fastness properties. They have particularly good solubility in alcohols, ketones and esters, but are virtually insoluble in hydrocarbons. Irgasperse® dyes are selected metal complex dyes that are especially suitable for wood stains. They are formulated using a special process and are supplied in a 1-methoxy-2-propanol or 1-ethoxy-2-propanol solution. The basic characteristics of these liquid dyes are good light fastness, good resistance to overcoating, very good compatibility with a wide range of solvents, good storage stability, low viscosity, fast drying and ease of use.

Effect pigments

BASF is the market leader in effect pigments. They are used to create a wide variety of special effects, from metallic to pearlescent. One of many examples is our new Glacier™ Frost

very small particle size make them suitable for water- and solvent-based as well as UV-curable formulations for wood coatings as well as inks for PVC applications. They can be used in combination with effect pigments to create very attractive decorative results. Microlith® products are easy to incorporate into the inks or coatings manufacturing process (no pigment grinding required) with optimum stability. They are also a good replacement for organic dyes in applications where transparency and good light fastness are very important. In addition, we offer Dispers liquid preparations for direct use in water-based wood coatings, while our Xfast® products feature low-dusting pigment preparations that can be directly stirred into water-based coating formulations.Our transparent iron oxides and carbon blacks within the Xfast®, Luconyl® NG and Sicofl ush® ranges provide the perfect solution for coloring fl ooring and we produce a range of functional pigments and pigment preparations for specialist applications like solar heat management.

White, which is made of the latest generation of synthetic mica fl akes coated with titanium dioxide. This synthetic mica pigment is absolutely transparent and is free of natural impurities such as iron oxides. Because of this, it offers better luster and brightness than traditional pigments and outstanding sparkle effects in all shade areas. Glacier™ Frost White is the whitest effect pigment currently available. Our Metasheen® product range is a vacuum-metalized aluminum pigment (VMP) that provides high-performance value-added effects for a variety of applications. Their highly refl ective effects are a result of the exceptionally smooth, fl at, mirror-like nature of the fl akes. By simply incorporating Metasheen® pigments into transparent color pigments and dyes, an endless array of metallic colors can be achieved.
