MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT:

With the long, hard winter we all have endured, it is natural that our students will be easily distracted once the weather finally warms up and the end of the school year is in their sights. However, it is more important than ever for our staff and students to stay focused on finish-ing the school year strong. The Ohio Achievement Assessments will be administered this month for grades 3-8 and it is imperative that our students are mentally and academically prepared to do well on these tests, which determine the outcome of our State Report Card re-sults. I know that with our highly qualified, dedicated staff and the contribution of our par-ents at home, our students will be successful. At the high school, I encourage our high school students to finish the year strong in order to improve their academic standing.

On another note, I will be holding three community meetings this month to introduce the ar-

chitects chosen for our final phase of construction for the elementary buildings and to solicit

input from all of you on the designs of our new schools. The dates are as follows:

April 8: 7 pm, Lincoln Gym

April 10: 7 pm, Grant Gym

April 16: 7 pm, Roosevelt Gym

Seventh Grade News

Social Studies – Students completed their studies of ancient China and Ja-pan. Many aspects of culture were explored. In addition, students learned about geographic and deliberate isolation. Students then returned to Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire and began looking at medieval times. Stu-dents will study the government and economic systems in place and the role of the church. Students will also create their own coat of arms. Language Arts - Ms. Pollner’s classes are investigating the similarities and differences

between characters who survive. They began by reading the novel I Am the Cheese. They then read three classic stories “The Most Dangerous Game,” “To Build and Fire,” and “Leiningen Versus the Ants” and com-pared the characteristics of the protagonists and antagonists and determined if they helped or hindered survival. Students also completed part two of their legacy projects. They interviewed someone in the community who is leaving a legacy and presented their in-terviews in an oral/visual format. There are certainly many people in our own community who are helping to make the world a better place!

Math - Mrs. Kilgore had a Pi Day Celebration to remember! So many goodies in the shapes of circles, cylinders, and spheres. Students used surface area and vol-ume formulas on their food before inhaling them or taking a to-go bag. Students have also been busy learning pre-algebra properties and operations. Students felt it was like a foreign language at the beginning, but even by the end of one week, their "math fluency" was amazingly quick! We are diving into some linear equations too with some test review as well! Testing - As we continue to prepare for OAA testing, attendance is very important. The reading test is Tuesday, April 29, and the math test is Thursday, May 8. Miscellaneous – Please continue to check Progress Book regularly and contact us with any concerns. Thank you for your continued support.

Eighth Grade News

8th grade science is working on the physical science standards. To enhance the stu-dents’ knowledge and understanding of forces and motion, the eighth graders will have the op-portunity to go to Cedar Point. The trip is on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. Turn in dates will be April 29 – May 5. Turn in times are in the morning before school only, in room 315 to Mrs. Hoy. The cost is $55 and includes the bus and tickets. If a student has a pass, the cost is $17. Students will need spending money for food. Students must be in good standing to qualify for the trip.

Here are the results of the Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair (NEOSEF) held at Cleveland State last week. Mrs. Pesta had 8 students from her class participate and all 8 of them placed. There were 495 projects from 90 schools in the surrounding 7 counties. They spent 3 hours at the fair waiting for possible judging. Each student was judged at least twice and some were judged as many as 10 times by special interest groups. We are very proud of their efforts and accomplishments!

Lindy Warren – physics – 3rd place Calvin Dolatowski – physics 2nd place ($25) Abe Dalisky – physics – 2nd place and 2 special awards: American Statistical Society and CSU department of physics (All together he won $75) Veronica Lee – environment – 3rd place Caitlin Cimino- chemistry – 3rd place Saige Rook – chemistry – honorable mention Layali Banna – health/medicine – honorable mention Claire Walkosak – biology – honorable mention Social studies students took an in-depth look at the Constitution and had the opportuni-ty to creatively share what they learned through raps, videos, posters or booklets. We are now learning the challenges the nation faced and the decisions that were made about how it would govern itself. This includes the precedents set by our early Presidents and the rise of political parties. Also, eighth grade students have the opportunity to participate in a simulation of the Underground Railroad on a field trip to the French Creek Nature Center.

In language arts classes, students were exposed to literature, informational text and film to build background knowledge of WW11. Students have finished reading The Diary of Anne Frank and have studied elements of drama. They will be reviewing key concepts studied this year in preparation of the OAA in April. Math students are finishing concepts related to the Pythagorean Theorem and will continue reviewing the math standards.

Sport Physicals – Tuesday, May 20

th – boys

Thursday, May 22nd

- girls Any athlete who is planning on participating in a Ranger sport next year should mark these dates down. Between the hours of 3:30 and 6:30 in the East Gym at

Lakewood High, athletic physicals will be given. All physicals are good for one cal-endar year. Getting it done at this time will take care of your physical requirement for next school year. Cost is only $10. Payment can either be cash or money order.

No personal checks will be accepted. If you take advantage of this great opportunity, you must arrive the day of the physical with an approved O.H.S.A.A. physical form. You can pick this up in the Lakewood High Athletic Department or from Mr. Ger-

hardt at Harding or go online to LHS athletics.

It must be signed and completed by a parent or quardian. If it is not, you will not be able to get a physical at this time.

Imagine having this done for next year already and at this great price! In addition, all the forms will be turned over to the Lakewood High Athletic Department so next

year you won’t have to worry about this form at all!

Go Harding! Go Rangers! Go Lakewood!

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ELIGIBILITY AND ATHLETICS

respective sport is determined by your previous nine-week grading period grades. You must have passed a total of 5 classes

assigned for the previous quarter in order to be eligible to try-out. Football, Volleyball, Cross-Country, and Fall Cheerleading

(Fourth Nine-Week Grading Period Grades); Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Wrestling, and Winter Cheerleading (First and

Second Nine-Week Grading Period Grades); Track and Field (Third Nine-Week Grading Period Grades). This is a very big

difference for those of you who have played recreation athletics in the past. You must be eligible to participate. If you are

having academic difficulties, talk to your teachers first and then see your academic counselor if further help is needed. Re-
