INTRODUCTION

G: Lance Armstrong once said "Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever."

I: When confronted by hardship and suffering, when its begins to erode away at one's will, eventually it becomes harder to resist the current dragging one into pain and suffering.

INTRODUCTION

S: Oprah Winfrey once said, "Turn your wounds into wisdom". Though this is a common saying, yet, in many cases, this is a feat few strong people can achieve.

T: I believe that hardship and suffering causes one to lose motivation and this along with poverty does not bring out the best in oneself due to poor circumstances

PEEL 1

P: Poverty is a form of hardship and suffering that does not bring out the best in people.

E: People that are living in poverty usually suffer from malnutrition and starvation. They live in terrible conditions and are unable to break out from the poverty cycle. The children do not receive enough education and they would not have the capability to improve themselves. They are not given the opportunity to achieve their full potential and are stuck doing menial jobs.

Eg: An example of this are the children and adults that live in the slums of Mumbai. Children do not go to school but start work at an early age to help provide for their family.

L: Therefore, hardship and suffering brought upon by poverty does not bring out the best in people as their poor conditions deprives them of optimal conditions to attain their full potential.

PEEL 2

P: The hardship and suffering people encounter, especially those that led to failure, acts as a mental barricade for them to start again.

E: As people do difficult things that are exhausting, both physically and emotionally, but in the end do not achieve success, they might just lose motivation to continue trying to achieve success and eventually just give up.

PEEL 2

Eg: Certain people who are diagnosed with cancer, especially tose who had suffered for a very long period of time, would feel like fighting cancer would be impossible and eventually give up. In August Liepold decided she didn't want to spend what time she had left suffering from the effects of chemotherapy. Instead Liepold chose palliative care and signed a do-not-resuscitate order.L: As hardship and suffering causes one to lose their drive and motivation, it does only harm to people and definitely does not help bring out the best in people.

PEEL 3

P: People who endure hardships and sufferings will affect the mental state of people

E: Living in an environment that is discouraging, where people will constantly be under pressure from adverse conditions. They tend to give up all hope which will put pressure on one's mental stability. This will eventually result in severe depression.

PEEL 3Eg: Certain students commit suicide when they do not achieve a certain grade despite studying hard. Chaninard Rungtivasuwan, 21, a fourth-year science student, was found dead yesterday after she leapt from a building in the vicinity of the university. Faculty of Science dean Prof Supot Hannongbua said her grade dropped to 3.18 in the last semester of her third year while she used to get 3.7 to 3.9 in her first and second years.

L: As such mental trauma caused by hardship and suffering inhibits one from reaching one's full potential, it does not necessarily bring out the best in people.
