Shared Interrupt Mechanism. The shared interrupt mechanism is a way of using the

single interrupt line available to the PCI card efficiently. It allowsthe serial ports on the PCI Multiport Card to share only one IRQline. Latching of the first asserted interrupt and a priority encodingsystem which queues any subsequent interrupts, allows the driversoftware to service the ports in an intelligent and orderly manner. This prevents one port dominating the interrupt line at the expenseof other ports.

Configuring PCI Multiport RS232 Cards. The PCI Quad and Lynx cards are fully “plug and play”,

and require no hardware configuration. They can be installed"directly from the box".

Installing A PCI Multiport Card. STEP 1: Turn the PC off, remove the plug from its socket anddetach all PC peripherals - mouse, keyboard etc.

STEP 2: Remove the case.

Step 3 - Remove Blanking Cover.

Choose an empty PCI expansion slot.Remove the blanking cover protecting theslot on the PC back panel. KEEP theblanking cover screw safely for later.

SOFTWARE CONFIGURATIONGUIDE

Introduction. This section describes the software installation procedure

allowing the PCI Quad RS232 or PCI Lynx 8 Port RS232 to beconfigured within the DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95 andWindows NT operating systems.

The setup procedures in this chapter assume that your PChas only COM1 present.

Note: Due to the nature of the installation procedure, there is littleor no difference between PCI Quad RS232 and PCI Lynx 8 PortRS232 installation methods. Instances where differences do existare clearly marked.

Configuring Ports in Windows 95 and 98.Although covering the installation of PCI Multiport cards

into the Windows 95 operating system, the procedure is also valid, with only minor differences, in the Windows 98 Operating System.

The Windows 95 environment now supports up to 255standard serial ports, RS232, RS422, RS485 etc.

To obtain a trouble free mix-and-match of the COM ports:

• Power up your PC after inserting your card or cards, as shownin Chapter 2.

• Windows 95 should then load normally. During the bootingprocess, Windows 95 will detect the card and you will brieflysee a message box indicating the detection process.

Page 17: Hardware Manual - Farnell element14the companion software package for our range of serial port cards. Chapter 2 - PCI Multiport Specifications, gives details of the PCI Quad / Lynx

PCI Quad / Lynx 8 Port RS232 Software Configuration

Chapter 3 Page 11

• Windows will then display the "Update Device DriverWizard", which asks you to “insert any disk which came withthe PCI card”. Insert the installation disk for Windows 95provided with the PCI Quad RS232 and click Next.

• The Wizard should then come up with the message: "Windowsfound the following updated driver for this device: PCI QuadRS232". Click Finish.

• A "Copying Files…" window should now appear. Click OKwhen it asks you to insert the disk.

• After copying the files Windows 95 will then detect each of theserial ports in turn and install them as MultiPortcommunications ports.

If you then use the Device Manager (by clicking on’System’ in the Control Panel) a window similar to one of thefollowing will be displayed:

PCI Lynx 8 PortRS232 users: Thismessages displays as"PCI Lynx 8 PortRS232 Card."

• Clicking on the Serial Solutions tab (for a PCI Lynx 8 Port),will display:

Some communications applications require the serial portsthey access to be as named COM 4 or lower. The COM portassignment may be changed, simply by selecting a new COM portvalue from the pull down menu relevant to the port. However,COM port usage other than those for the selected card itself are notchecked, so it is advisable to first check which COM ports are inuse - port availability can be checked by viewing the DeviceManager:

All COM ports present will be listed under the entry "Ports(COM & LPT)." The above screenshots indicates that COM2 - 4and COM9 and above are not installed.

Selecting The Maximum Baud Rate. The baud clock determines the maximum rate at which the

serial ports of the PCI Multiport card can communicate. Thestandard PC serial ports allow baud rates up to a maximum of115,200; however, both PCI Multiport cards can be set to use baudrates of up to 230,400 and beyond.

• Double clicking a card entry under the "Multi-FunctionAdapters", in Device Manager and select the Serial Solutionstab. The Maximum Baud Rate settings are located at thebottom of this window:

The default Maximum Baud Rate Setting is 115,200 baud, which provides full backward compatibility with standard serialports. Any change to the baud rate settings here will affect allof the cards ports. Table 3-1, below, lists the baud rates availableat the various Maximum Baud Rate Settings. Setting the card to ahigher baud rate requires connection to a device that supports thishigher rate. Whatever setting you use will be stored by the PCIMultiport configuration software and set up again the next timeWindows is started.

It has been found during testing that the PCI Quad / Lynx 8Port RS232 will operates correctly up to 230,400 baud at distancesof up to 10 meters.

The IRQ = 11The I/O address = 0140The SISR = 0104

NEWCOM.SYS Parameters. The NewCOM.SYS device driver included with the PCI

Quad RS232 driver software is used to set up the card in DOS andhas the following syntax:

NEWCOM.SYS /A port address, /L SISR, IRQ, range /B numberbuffer /S buffer /H hardware handshake

Where /A port address specifies COM port number followed by ahexadecimal address in the form /Ax,y where x is COMport range and y is I/O address.

/L SISR, IRQ, range specifies SISR address, card interrupt andCOM port range. The COM port range specifies the COMport(s). Range may be a single port OR a range of ports.

/B number buffer is used to set the number of pairs ofbuffers to be allocated to ports and is a decimal number inthe range 1-maxport.

/S buffer Set size of all buffers in bytes, buffer is roundedto the nearest power of 2 and must be a decimal number inthe range 32 to 32768. For any serial port opened twobuffers of size buffer are allocated, one for input and theother for output.

/H hardware handshake selects which hardware handshake

Page 39: Hardware Manual - Farnell element14the companion software package for our range of serial port cards. Chapter 2 - PCI Multiport Specifications, gives details of the PCI Quad / Lynx

PCI Quad / Lynx 8 Port RS232 Software Configuration

Chapter 3 Page 33

type to use on the specified ports. This is used in thefollowing manner: /H range, hs where range specifies theCOM port or ports and hs selects handshake type.Handshake types available are:

Type 0 RS232 DTR/CTS - The PC only transmitswhen CTS is input true. When the PC is able toreceive its sets DTR output true. The DSR andDCD inputs are ignored. The RTS output lineis set true just in case the external serial deviceneeds a true signal.

Type 4 3 Wire Handshake - Really no handshake at allsince the PC transmits irrespective of thehandshake lines. The 3 wires are TxD, RxD andGround, no other lines are required. Thus theCTS, DSR and DCD inputs are ignored. The RTSand DTR output lines are set true just in case theexternal serial device needs a true signal.

Note: If hardware handshaking is not specified in theNEWCOM.SYS parameters, type 4, 3 WireHandshake is selected automatically.

Configuring and Installing NEWCOM.SYSTo load the Serial Solutions for DOS device driver an entry

needs to be added to the CONFIG.SYS file. Any simple text editor,EDIT for example, can edit the CONFIG.SYS file for example. Theinstallation procedure given below is for a PCI Quad RS232 asCOM 5 - COM8 and a PCI Lynx 8 Port RS232 as COM5 - COM12

The parameter required by the NEWCOM.SYS driver arethose returned by the BBCARDS.EXE application earlier. A briefexplanation for the parameters required by NEWCOM.SYS follows:

Port Address./A5-8,0140

Page 40: Hardware Manual - Farnell element14the companion software package for our range of serial port cards. Chapter 2 - PCI Multiport Specifications, gives details of the PCI Quad / Lynx

Chapter 3 Page 34

COM ports 5,6,7 and 8 are defined, with an i/o addressrange that begins at 0140h and all subsequent ports have an i/oaddress that is 8 higher than the previous. i.e. if COM5 has anaddress of 0140h, then COM6 will have an address of 0148h,COM7 an address of 0150h etc.

PCI Lynx 8 Port RS232 Users: /A5-12,0140

SISR, IRQ, Range./L 0104,11,5-8

0104h is the i/o address SISR, 11 is the IRQ and since theCOM port range is COM5 - COM8 range is entered as 5-8.

PCI Lynx 8 Port RS232 Users: /L 0104,11,5-12

Number Buffer./B8

8 buffers are defined, though only four ports are in use -this is because buffers in DOS are assigned in a sequential orderfrom COM1. Since the PCI Quad RS232 has been assigned COMport values of 5 to 8, all preceding COM ports, must have buffersassigned to them also.

PCI Lynx 8 Port RS232 Users: /B12

Buffer Size./S512

Buffer size set to 512 bytes.

Hardware Handshaking./H,4

Type 4, 3 Wire Handshake selected for all ports.

Modifying Command Line Parameters. When "assembled" the NEWCOM.SYS command line

looks like…

DEVICE=NEWCOM.SYS /A5-8,0140 /L 0104,11,5-8 /B8 /S 512 /H,4…and should be entered into the CONFIG.SYS file. Once you aresure that these parameters have been entered correctly, restart yourPC and your PCI Quad RS232 should be ready to use immediately.Sample terminal applications are provided on "Serial SolutionsDisk 1 & 2" enabling communications to be established to yourperipherals quickly and easily.

PCI Lynx 8 Port RS232 Users: When "assembled" theNEWCOM.SYS command line looks like:

CABLING.

Introduction. This chapter gives details of the 9 and 25 pin RS232 pin outs, cabling and connections, with information on how to connect theserial ports of two PCs, how to make a selftest loop back connectorand the pinouts of the PCI Quad and Lynx 8 Port RS232 card

The RS232 Standard. The RS232 standard is ancient in computer industry terms.

Introduced in 1962, it is now widely established. RS232 is a slowspeed, short distance, single ended transmission system (i.e. onlyone wire per signal). Typical RS232 maximum cable length is 50feet with a maximum data rate of 20K bits per second.

9 Pin D Serial Port RS232 Cables. To connect to the AT style RS232 Serial Port you will need acable terminating in a 9 way female D connector. It is soundpractice to use cables with screws fitted that will allow you tofasten the cable securely to the PC card. In general, you will need to make up a "cross over" cable tocorrectly interface the PC to the RS232 port of another computeror device. Traditionally, making up the cross over cable has beenconsidered a black art. However, provided you have the pin outsand handshake requirements of both sides of your RS232

Page 44: Hardware Manual - Farnell element14the companion software package for our range of serial port cards. Chapter 2 - PCI Multiport Specifications, gives details of the PCI Quad / Lynx

RS232 Pinouts and Port Cabling PCI Quad / Lynx 8 Port RS232

Chapter 4 Page 38

connection, the cross over cable becomes a matter of commonsense. The cross over cable is simply to ensure that the rightsignals going out of one RS232 port go into the appropriate linesof the other RS232 port.

9 Pin D Serial Port Connection To Another PC. Suppose we want to connect the AT style 9 pin D Serial Portto the serial port of another IBM PC. See Figure 4-3.

1) Connect the earth lines. Line 5 of Serial Port 2 to lines 1 & 7 of the other PC. This gives the two devices a common earth level.

2) Connect the Transmit and Receive lines together. Line 3, TXD, Port 2 goes to line 3, RXD, of the other PC. Line 2, RXD, Port 2 goes to line 2, TXD, of the other PC. This allows each to receive the data transmitted by the

other.

3) Connect the Port 2 DTR line, pin 4 to the other PC DCD,pin 8 and CTS, pin 5, lines. Also, connect up the other PC DTR line, pin 20 to the Port2 DCD, pin 1 and CTS, pin 8, lines. This allows the receiving device to signal when it can nolonger accept data. The receiving device sets DTR falsewhen it is unable to receive any more data. The sendingdevice reads DTR on its CTS and DCD pins. It should stopsending when CTS goes false.

4) Connect the Port 2 RTS line, pin 7, to the other PC DSRline, pin 6.

Also, connect the other PC RTS line, pin 4, to the Port 2DSR line, pin 6.

This RTS line is used to let the other device know that it isready for data exchange.
