Progress Association President’s Report...

February was a month of starting to deliver on promises and planning for the future.

Achievements for the month were:

The ceiling in the Hall being repaired—Thanks Daryl

Fans put in the can shed roof—Thanks Daryl

Hall painting started—Thanks Daryl, Ferd and Kevin

Council visit—Trevor Aldridge and I toured the town with Nick and Jason from Council believe we will get good support from the Council and we have promised to do our bit to make it all work.

Things we are working on:

Table and chairs put back at Boat Ramp – Council to install

Toilet block at Boat ramp – Discussion has taken place with shack owners in the area but more work to be done and funding required so it is still a work in progress. Residents will be consulted with as we proceed.

Tree removal at several road junctions for safety purposes - Council approved

Reduction of sand invasion to shacks at Boat Ramp – Council to assist

Playground uplift – Council assisting

Other items as per our Minutes from February Minutes

The big “Dead Tree” clean up has been approved by council and they will assist us, so can I ask as many people as possible to register as volunteers. We have a small team who are going to start the work as soon as the fire sea-son ends but they will need help. We will be arranging a working bee in early May so sharpen your chain saws, hook up your trailer, bring a ute or if you have a tip truck that would be fantastic. I will let you know the date after our next meeting on the 19th March.

March 12th is a big day. The fishing competition. Let’s hope the weather man is kind as we have some great cash prizes and wonderful raffle prizes from generous sponsors. It should be fun and I will be there with my crew (Son and Grandson) trying hard to catch the biggest fish in all categories.

Shop update – I have had a discussion with the owners who inform me the business is doing well. It is quiet after the hectic holiday period but a reminder they have newspapers, fuel, bait and tackle, ice-creams, general supplies and take away or eat in food and coffee. The Progress Association continues to support the shop wherever possible. Joanna has asked me to apologise in advance if the shop is expectantly closed for a few hours should the baby arrive in a hurry and until they can get replacement staff to cover. I told her that we have very considerate people in Hardwicke Bay and having a baby is a very good excuse. Again let me say how good it is to have a Professionally run shop so keep supporting and if you are a local who has resisted going to the shop for whatever reason – PLEASE give it a go and you will be pleased.

Again thanks for the continual support from many people and offers to help in the last month as we strive to improve our Piece of Paradise.

At the hall...

Meet the Committee ...

Committee member Barbara Winter has been married to John for 65 years and has 6 children, 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren! John was an upholsterer for 50 years and Barbara had a ballet school for 45 years. The couple first came to Hard-wicke Bay 34 years ago for holidays and became permanent residents 24 years ago. Both John and Barbara have been on the committee and previously served as treasurer and secretary for 9 years.

A few of Barbara’s likes include:

Going camping and over the years the couple have managed to camp all through Australia.

Barbara really enjoys the monthly community dinners at the hall as it is an opportunity to catch up with people.

Barbara used to enjoy doing exercises at the hall 3 times a week but that has come to an end and she would love to see it start up again. Please see Barbara if you’re interested!

We asked Barbara what she would like to see for Hardwicke Bay in the future:

For everyone to be more community minded like we used to be.

What’s Been Happening…

If you’ve been fishing lately and launched your boat from the boat ramp you

would have noticed we have new permanent cardinal markers installed to

assist with navigating safe passage from the beach. These were installed

mid-February 2017.

Whilst our beach is not considered a channel, Department of Planning,

Transport and Infrastructure took into consideration the number of fishermen

navigating from the beach through the reef and deemed it appropriate to

provide fixed markers consisting of a pile with a day mark (green / red) and a

solar light to assist in marking the extent of the reef and giving a guide for boat

users to know when it is safe to travel north or south. Not all fishermen launching from Hardwicke Bay are familiar with the safest route

out from the boat ramp so we must thank Graeme Bridgman for all his work in making this happen.

Behind every angry woman stands a man who has absolutely no idea what he did wrong.

And finally….

The wife left a note on the fridge, “It’s not working . I can’t take it anymore. Gone to stay with my mother!”

The husband opened the fridge, the light came on, the beer was cold…

He wonders to himself, “There’s nothing wrong with the fridge, what’s she on about???”

Never make a woman mad…. They can remember stuff that hasn’t even happened yet.

A wise man once said… nothing!

Some things are better left unsaid… I usually realise it right after I say them.

Life is short…. Smile while you have teeth.

Been there done that… then been there several more times and done it again, because apparently I never learn.

YP Waste and Recycling Calendar... Hardwicke Bay is area two in the waste schedule (represented by the dark yellow dates for rubbish and recycling) and collection is

on Wednesdays. Garden organics are scheduled monthly (represented by the dark green dates) and collected on Thursdays If you

require your bins to be brought in after collection please email [email protected] to arrange.

Also, don’t forget to keep your bottles and cans out of your recycling bin and place them in the blue bins available around the area

(let us know if you don’t have access to one) so the money raised from returns can go towards improving our town. Every 10c

counts and we thank Ronnie and the other volunteers for collecting and managing the recycling! We couldn’t do it without you.

Easter is coming up in April and progress will be hosting

the annual Easter Pancake Breakfast and markets. Do you

have anything to donate for sale, or are you interested in

having a stall? Contact [email protected] to

We look forward to seeing everyone at the hall for

breakfast and an Easter Egg hunt for the children. More
