Progress Association President’s Report... Hello there. After a very quiet month or two Hardwicke Bay has sprung back into life with plenty of shackies and visitors about. No doubt everyone is enjoying getting away after being shut down for the last two months.

The Community Hall is reopening again as from June 1, as per the Government directions. We are allowed to have 60 people on the premises (30 in each of the rooms and 1.5 metres apart). So Bingo will recommence on Wednesday June 3 and Friday night drinks on Friday June 5. That is the start of the long weekend so if you can, come down to the hall and enjoy our first social gathering in some time!

The volunteers have been busy cutting firewood. We can supply trailers loads or alternatively we have 15 kgs bags of both firewood and lighting wood out the front of the hall. Honesty system applies - $15 for wood and $ 10 for lighting wood. All funds go straight back into the community.

Talking of fundraising, we made over 4k last year from bottle and can collections. I don’t know if that suggests that many of us have significant drinking problems – but whatever the case it is a great fundraiser for our community! Please remember wine bottles are not able to be cashed in, so place them in your yellow bin thanks. And if anyone needs a Progress bin for their cans and bottles, let us know and we will drop one around.

The Progress Association are now working on another small development near the boat ramp car park. We hope to put a viewing platform (lookout) next to the existing steps with a shelter that matches the other two along the foreshore. A single enviro toilet tucked away in the corner is also being considered. We have noticed that many people like to come down to that area and wait for boats to come in, so believe this would be well utilised. Concept plans will soon be drawn up and then fundraising will commence and requests for assistance from the Council and Government will be sent out. Feel free to make a donation towards this at any time.

Not much word on the fishing scene. Some say that have been doing well and others say there are very few about. As all fisherman are compulsive liars (myself included) - one often has trouble distinguishing truth from fiction. I guess the only way to be certain is to get out there yourself and see what is about!

The Brentwood Store and Post Office SA Chronicle and Weekly Mail, October 5, 1878: -

“Minlacowie. A meeting was held in Mr Mudge’s store yesterday evening to consider the

present postal arrangements, and to name the township. Mr James Mudge occupied the chair.

A proposition that the town be named Brentwood, was unanimously carried.”

In August 1890 a farewell was held at Brentwood for the Mudge family who were leaving for Sea Lake, Victoria. Two years passed before Alexander (Alex) Anderson purchased the store which he and his family operated for twenty years. Rupert Allan Wilson, shop assistant of Alex, took on the lease of the store in October 1912. Six months later he married Winnie (Winifred) Anderson, oldest daughter of Alex. The Wilson family operated the shop up until May 1954 when Winnie, widow of Rupert, sold the shop and retired to Yorketown. The store had been held by the Anderson family for over 60 years. In 1950 after leaving school at fifteen, Daph Koop (Southshore), worked at the Brentwood Store for six years. Alfred Wheatley was the manager, his daughter Valma was the other shop assistant. The store was open the traditional five days a week and a half day Saturday, it was always busy. Orders were placed by the local farmers and residents and Mr Wheatley would deliver groceries to Hardwicke Bay and the surrounding area. Most locals ran an account which was settled at the end of the month. As there were no calculators or computers back then Daph remembers adding long lists of prices with pen and paper.

The store kept everything in stock, there was no need to travel to Minlaton, besides the usual groceries; hardware, jewellery, gifts, boiled lollies in big glass jars, a big side of bacon hung in a meat safe above the counter and rashers would be cut on request. Potatoes came in large wheat bags then were weighed out in 2lb (1kg) paper bags. Bread was delivered twice weekly by “Boss” Tilbrook, of Tilbrook Bros Bakery at Minlaton, 100 white high-top loaves which the staff would then individually wrap the loaves in newspaper and write the name of

the order on the newspaper. A single petrol pump had been installed directly in front of the store in 1927. The pump was oper-ated by a hand pump which Daph recalled being quite a workout and customers were always served by one of the staff. Hazel Wheatley, Valma’s sister, operated the post office and telephone exchange which covered the Brentwood and Hardwicke area. Party telephone lines were common, and a certain ring would signal that the call was for your home or another ring sequence for the neighbours down the road. Indeed, everyone who shared the same line could listen in on their neighbours conversations! Every morning one of the staff would place a telephone call to the Minlaton exchange to report the rainfall record of the previous 24 hours, whether it had rained or not. On occasion the “bush telegraph” would be in action with a telephone call warning the store that the “gypsies” were in Minlaton and on their way to Brentwood. Just who the “gypsies” were Daph cannot remember but it meant that a group of people would descend on the store and attempt to distract the assistants while others were stealing from the shelves. The store manager did his best to keep his eye on the goods, but it was inevitable that some items would be missing after the “gypsies” left on their way to Warooka. After Winnie Wilson sold the store in 1954 it was taken up by the Munt family, Doley, Jones and finally the Johnson family. The store eventually ceased operation in the mid 1970’s. The Brentwood Store had supplied the local district for nearly 100 years. In 1987 the Rattley family opened the Hardwicke Bay General Store.

YP Waste and Recycling Calendar... Hardwicke Bay is area two in the waste schedule (represented by the dark yellow dates for rubbish and recycling) and collection is

on Wednesdays. Garden organics are scheduled monthly (represented by the dark green dates) and collected on Thursdays.

Also, don’t forget to keep your bottles and cans out of your recycling bin and place them in the blue bins available around the area

(let us know if you don’t have access to one) so the money raised from returns can go towards improving our town. Every 10c

counts and we thank our volunteers for collecting and managing the recycling! We couldn’t do it without you. Volunteers are a bit

short at the moment so if you can spare an hour or two to help out with jobs like this it would be appreciated a lot!

The wood will be replenished daily and the money from sales collected.

This is an honesty system – cash to be placed in adjacent box marked ‘Firewood Box’.

This is both a fundraiser and a service to the Hardwicke Bay Community.
