Progress Association President’s Report... Well, not much to report on this time of the year in Hardwicke Bay! With the turn in the weather, everything slows down and visitors become rare. Still, in between the rain we have had some glorious autumn days with a few boaties heading out to try and get some early winter whiting. The country has had a much needed drink, with rainwater tanks filling up and paddocks turning green. Everything looks refreshed.
Our current projects are all on track to be completed within the next few weeks and months. The bike track in Progress Park will be formed next Saturday, the playground extension is completed with the fencing to go in very shortly and the rock wall around our entrance sign will go up by the end of June. That only leaves our replacement beach shelters that have been held up by the engineering plans – the engineer doing them decided to get married and went on a honeymoon – obviously not dedicated to our project! Nevertheless, we will definitely have them up when they are needed by early summer.
Have a look at the event at the hall advertised in this edition – free sausages at Friday night drinks on the long weekend. Come along and see our latest purchase for the hall too – a new wooden bar! See you there.
Ashley Gordon
President
It was recently noticed that our townships AED (Automated external defibrillator)
(or heart kick start machine!!) that is located on the wall of the shop here in
Hardwicke Bay - was not registered. If the machine is registered with SAAS (South
Australian Ambulance Service) when someone calls triple zero due to a medical
emergency and a heart problem is suspected, they will now be advised that there
is an AED at the shop that may assist until the ambulance arrives. This oversight
has now been rectified and the machine is officially registered.

A few early pioneers of Hardwicke Bay
The expansion of the township of Hardwicke Bay, north of the
Cutline, that has made Hardwicke Bay the town we know today,
began in 1971 when Darryl and Dianne Rohde, who were looking to
build their first home, approached the landowner and divided a
corner off of Section 262, Hundred of Minlacowie (corner of Beach
and Northshore roads). Six years later Arthur (Mick) Moore and his
wife Phyllis (nee Boundy) went on to subdivide part of their farm,
beginning with the further subdivision of Section 262 and Section
253N, the land south of Beach Road encompassing Progress Park,
followed by Section 263, along Moore’s Drive, a few years later.
The substantial stone home on Progress Road, currently owned by
the Honner family, is situated on Section 253S. This section was
purchased in 1923 by Walter Marquand Le Poidevin and his wife
Harriet Ann (nee Boundy), grandparents of long-term Hardwicke Bay
resident, Daph Koop. Walter and his sons, Walter Henry and Clifford
Boundy Le Poidevin, built the house that still stands today in 1925.
WM Le Poidevin & Sons were well known for the construction of con-
crete water tanks, many still stand in the local area. The large tank adjacent to the Honner home was erected by them in April
1925.
Excerpt from a letter written to the children’s pages of the Chronicle in 1911, by Walter Henry Le Poidevin, when he was 12
years old. “Hardwicke Bay, Brentwood…I go to school with my brother Clifford, and I am in the fourth class. We have two miles
to walk…I can’t tell you much about Brentwood because it is such a small town. There are two blacksmith shops, school,
church, store and institute. Hardwicke Bay is a nice beach for sea shells, and especially nautilus shells. My grandfather lives
close to the sandhills. He is a large farmer and in the holidays Clifford and I help our grandfather with his sheep…”
Walter’s grandparents, Henry and Harriet Boundy, after moving to the
area in the 1870’s built their first house of mud on Section 19 in the
paddock now owned by the Walton family.

There have been three recent reports of abalone poachers near Hardwicke Bay. The first incident occurred about 2
months ago north of Moores Drive near the Pt. Minlacowie boat ramp when local police caught two men poaching
undersize abalone and exceeding the daily bag limit. Another group were seen poaching abalone on Flaherty’s
Beach about 6 weeks ago, about 1 km south of the boat launch area. Unfortunately, they escaped before Police
and Fisheries could arrive.
Just last week, two men were caught with
256 undersize abalone (see photo) in a
joint Fisheries and Police operation that
resulted in one being arrested and one
being reported. This time, they were
about 1 km north of where the asphalt
ends on Moores Drive.
If anyone sees suspicious activity, which
would include vehicles parked in unusual
locations, possibly with a lookout with
that car, perhaps number plates obscured,
snorkelers in the water just offshore
around shallow reefs – please call
Fishwatch on 1800 065 522. Do not ap-
proach the people – these are serious
criminals involved in organised crime!!

A huge thank you to one of our local companies, Redding Crushing, who have donated 56 tonnes of soil so we can create a bike track in Progress Park for the local kids. Shane and Belynda Redding operate from Mt Rat just past Minlaton and deliver gravel and soil products all around the peninsula. At the moment they have their crushing plant just past the end of Moores Drive near Hardwicke Bay, so it is an ideal time to order gravel for your
yard as cartage is a minimum being so close to us. They can be contacted on 0409 099 477 for orders. Thanks again Shane and Belynda!! The Progress Association have listened to those that had concerns about the bike track and have ensured the following will occur: The track will be constructed of clay based earth that will set like concrete and will prevent dust. No trees or shrubs will be removed to construct the track. "No motorbikes" signs will be erected. The track will be in the centre of the scrub area of Progress Park so it is not near adjoining properties.
The track is being formed by a local bobcat driver in the next week or so.

Enforcement of Dog and Cat Microchipping Laws
17 MAY 2019 Yorke Peninsula Council
New laws introduced on 1 July 2018 made it a legal requirement for all dogs and cats to be microchipped by 12 weeks of age, or at
the point of sale. This includes all dogs and cats, including those that were born before 1 July 2018.
Currently, approximately 700 dogs across our region are still not microchipped. As a gentle warning, from 1 July 2019 an audit will be
conducted on dogs and cats that are not microchipped, and fines will be issued to owners that are not compliant.
Please do not let this happen, be responsible and get your pet microchipped.
