1. Discuss the validity of Michael Jackson being given the distinction of the best musical act of the 1980s. Do you agree or disagree. Justify your answer.

2. How did the role and influence of female artists compare and contrast to males of the 1980s? How did these female artists compare to other female artists of the 60s and 70s?

3. What songs from the 1980s did you recognize? What makes these songs distinct and popular still today? How does a song become ‘iconic’ or ‘timeless’?

4. Based on the music of the 1980s, what conclusions can be drawn regarding common attitudes in society and popular culture? How have attitudes shifted from previous decades?

5. 1980s music has been defined through big hair, over the top fashion and an emergence of androgyny. What is androgyny and what does its appearance tell us about society and popular culture in the 1980s? Are there examples of musicians who express androgyny today? Explain.

Beatles, The Stones, U2 etc. Can one band profoundly affect the music industry again or has too much changed?
