create at least 3-5 discussion questions regarding the influence of music on the era of 1982-present.
4. Be prepared to share your thoughts, reactions and reflections in your groups tomorrow.
Think about:
What do you think is the most important factor in defining a musical artist: success, popularity or legacy?
Review: The 1980s 1. Who were the major artists of the 1980s in the following areas:

2. What were the major trends in fashion and hair in music in the 1980s with bands like Guns n’ Roses, Def Leppard and Bon Jovi?
3. Why were bands like U2 and Bruce Springsteen given the distinction as most ‘commercially appealing”? What does this mean?
4. Why was the collaboration between Run DMC and Aerosmith so revolutionary?

1. Discuss the validity of Michael Jackson being given the distinction of the best musical act of the 1980s. Do you agree or disagree. Justify your answer.
2. How did the role and influence of female artists compare and contrast to males of the 1980s? How did these female artists compare to other female artists of the 60s and 70s?
3. What songs from the 1980s did you recognize? What makes these songs distinct and popular still today? How does a song become ‘iconic’ or ‘timeless’?
4. Based on the music of the 1980s, what conclusions can be drawn regarding common attitudes in society and popular culture? How have attitudes shifted from previous decades?
5. 1980s music has been defined through big hair, over the top fashion and an emergence of androgyny. What is androgyny and what does its appearance tell us about society and popular culture in the 1980s? Are there examples of musicians who express androgyny today? Explain.

artists in the late 90s and early 2000s? How many female Canadian music acts are covered or mentioned in the video?
2. How many different genres were mentioned in the 1990s video? Why do you think that society embraced so many new genres of music in the 1990s?
3. What is ‘grunge’? Who was Generation X? What was the message that the Grunge bands of the 1990s exemplified?
4. Compare and contrast the Backstreet Boys to Nirvana. How was their music defined and controlled through their image?

4. What role does sexuality play in music in the 2000s? Which musical artists do you think redefined “sexuality” in the music industry?
5. What has changed in regards to a musical ‘performance’ (ie. concerts, videos) compared to previous decades? Explain.

in regards to musical success? Explain.

Beatles, The Stones, U2 etc. Can one band profoundly affect the music industry again or has too much changed?
