10th July (Noon)

‘Through The Garden Gate’ Near perfect weather graced Harleston’s Open Gardens weekend of 3rd and 4th June and visitors streamed through the open garden gates. It was a great weekend, thoroughly enjoyed by visitors and garden owners alike. The town centre was alive with friend and family groups planning their route via the trail maps, and deciding whether to take the hop-on, hop-off vintage bus to the

further-out addresses, or whether to take Shanks’s pony! So busy was the event that additional maps/tickets were printed on the Saturday afternoon courtesy of Kieron Robinson, Harleston’s stationer extraordinaire.

‘Through The Garden Gate’ was organised by the Events Team at Harleston’s Future, and Harleston Garden Club. Nicky Stainton, Chair of the Events Group said they were happy to have worked with the Garden Club to create the successful event, and appreciated the “fantastic support from club members and all the garden hosts who welcomed visitors most warmly and went to such trouble to ensure their gardens looked attractive. The feedback from visitors”, she said “was enthusiastic, and it will have added to Harleston’s reputation as a place worth visiting.” Nicky herself counted 250 visitors through her garden and studio on the Saturday alone and reckons most of the 25 gardens received between 170 and 250 visitors each day – just what had been hoped for. “We had 402 visitors altogether through our gate – incredible!” said Carol Wiles.

Lesley and David Rock thought the weekend had been as fascinating and fun for garden hosts as it was for visitors. “You had no idea from minute to minute who would come next through your gate or across your drive! It might have been a friend or local acquaintance: someone from one of our county towns or further afield – even overseas; or a cycling or walking group taking a breather. We met no end of interesting people and enjoyed some great conversations.”

Hidden Figures (PG) Putting a man on the moon is one of humanity’s greatest achievements, but the women who played a part in getting him there have gone unsung. This is the incredible true story of three brilliant African-American women – experts in mathematics, physics and engineering - who made possible the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. A heart-warming celebration of their crucial contributions.

Summer Fun Day What a brilliant day! The Rehoming Centre was very busy with people bringing their dogs and children for this fun day out. It was fantastic to see some ex-Dogs Trust residents come back to say hello too!

There were lots of great things to get involved in, and we had some hilarious moments with the Egg & Spoon Race and Best Biscuit Catcher! (Sponsored by Pooch’s Biscuits).

The display from the Lowestoft Dog Agility Team was very impressive, with some real high jumpers and even a ring of fire! And if you were inspired by that, the Snakewood Dog Training Society also ran ‘Have a Go Agility’ and a Dog Scurry Run, so you could test your canine’s prowess against our other visitors.

We counted over 550 cars and we estimate about 2,000 dog lovers on the day, all helping to raise an astounding £7,206.79!! (and still counting!). It’s an amazing achievement and the staff at Dogs Trust Snetterton would like to thank everyone who put in such an effort to make this a wonderfully successful day.

Especially all the volunteers who made sure there were plenty of tea and cakes to go around!

Roll on next year…

Splat ! On Sunday 4

th June at 2 pm, our 7 year old grand-daughter Lily was enjoying

riding her bike around Harleston BMX track when she fell off her bike on a corner of this children's track straight into a large pile of potentially diseased dog EXCREMENT!!! Lily was completely covered all down one side of her body with that dog poo. To say that she was absolutely distraught and embarrassed would be an understatement.

The whole episode was witnessed by two other families having their picnic nearby whilst watching their own children enjoying themselves.

Even though Harleston Town Council has spent much money displaying legal obligation notices reminding all dog owners of their responsibilities, there are, it would appear, still some criminal owners out there apparently happy enough to totally ignore these notices and jeopardise both the physical and emotional wellbeing of our children.

These criminal offences give all responsible dog owners a bad name.

Angry and Concerned Local Residents

Comment:

Dealing with pet waste is one of those topics that every pet owner must deal with but no one likes to talk about.

The fact is that the majority of community and neighbourhood pet problems result from the inappropriate handling of pet waste.

In addition, pet waste is the greatest source of potential health risk for your pet and your family.

Flies will consume and lay eggs in faeces.

These same flies will then come into your house and then spread disease as they pause on your counter and food.

Need we say more about keeping faeces cleaned up to prevent this cycle?

Can I Give You My Number? I like to think that I am fairly “down with the kidz” – I have been known to employ the letter Z in unseemly places, acknowledge that some modern music is actually quite catchy and I understand what most of the buttons on the TV remote do.

However, I must admit I am beginning to struggle with the sheer amount of different communication platforms now routinely used to stay in touch.

I can grasp the process of answering the phone or even checking voicemails should I have missed a call. I am au fait with text messaging even utilising an emoticon where appropriate :-) What’s more, I can identify between SMS and iMessage! I even (on occasion) apply screen effects to generate firework or confetti backgrounds. Similarly, I take great joy in turning the phone horizontally to hand write messages and draw childlike pictures.

I have embraced the free messaging service “WhatsApp” that allows communication through the data network across devices, operating systems and contact groups.

I am proficient with email services and can manage the balance between business and personal accounts from multiple syncing devices including pc, tablet and phone.

Having used Facebook for many years I can fathom the principles of private messaging, posting on walls, commenting, liking, reacting, poking and befriending! I also have a Facebook business page, through which I can publicise activities and display professional and/or geeky photos albeit, in truth I’m too lazy busy ;-) to update it regularly.

I am aware of the commercial potential that pages on Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest can unlock, although I do not utilise these services. I have resisted the allure of Linkedin (a social network for the business community) simply because I have enough preoccupations to check and update as it is!

I can Skype and FaceTime (Apple’s video calling equivalent) from my phone. As well as monitoring potential calls through the WhatsApp and the Facebook Messenger app. I have Snapchat (a photo messaging app), although I tend not to picturize my daily activities.

I have a website and a contact form whereby customers can send me a message directly from the page. It would be advantageous if I blogged too, maximising my reach and appeal as well as optimising my search engine results…. but I don’t. I am however, practically perfect in every other way!

Fine Foods Store in Harleston The Rustic Catering Co. opened a brand new Fine Foods Store in Harleston on Tuesday 30

th May.

The Fine Foods Store is both a delicatessen and greengrocer selling a great selection of local produce such as wines, cheeses, meats and sweet treats. They also serve sandwiches made to order with fresh artisan bread baked in-store with a mouthwatering selection of cheese, meat and vegetarian fillings.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are delivered daily from local outlets to the Fine Foods Store.

A hamper service is on offer for special occasions such as birthdays and Christmas or to thank a loved one. These are also available to buy for specific dietary requirements such as vegetarian, vegan, dairy and gluten-free so there is something to suit everyone.

The store is run by Paul Renaut, who has a background in catering and is a master baker with 20 years’ experience. He said: “I joined the Tudor Bakehouse when I was 15, which started me on the path to my career so I’m excited to be back in Harleston at this great new venture for The Rustic Catering Co.”

“Buying good local produce isn’t just a modern trend.” he added. “It’s how it always used to be, so we feel the Fine Foods Store will showcase just how good the food grown and made in South Norfolk still is. We’ve researched some fantastic local produce and have more great ideas in the pipeline.”

This latest store adds to The Rustic Catering Co.’s presence in Harleston through their successful outside catering company and The Waffles and Shakes Café in Broad Street, which serves freshly baked waffles with a variety of delicious toppings as well as milkshakes and hot drinks.

What is Contactless? Contactless is a fast, easy and secure way to pay for purchases costing £30 and under. Contactless payments are becoming increasingly common on a range of devices including:

Pre-paid, debit, charge and credit cards

Stickers

Key fobs

Wearable devices, such as watches and wristbands

Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets

The underlying technology for all of these contactless payment devices is the same.

The contactless device contains an antenna so that when it is touched against a contactless terminal, it securely transmits purchase information to and from the terminal.

You can tell if you have a contactless card if you see the following contactless indicator on the front or back of your card.

Contactless image

Contactless devices, apart from cards, will not necessarily have a contactless indicator on them, and may require you to activate them.

For example, you may have a payment app on your smartphone, which requires you to activate it through a passcode or your fingerprint.

You are also able to make contactless payments for over £30 if you have a device that supports this.

You will need to verify yourself on your device before you can make the contactless payment.

For example, if you have a smartphone you may be able to verify yourself through a passcode or your fingerprint on your payment app, and then make a purchase for over £30.

News from the Town Council Dogs on the Recreation Grounds – There has been a huge improvement in the number of dogs on leads at the recreation ground, and I would like to thank everyone who I have spoken to for their understanding and acceptance of the rules that dogs must be kept on leads at all times (except in the dog run area).

Unfortunately, on a less positive note, there was a distressing incident for a little girl recently who fell off her bike at the corner of the bike track and got dog excrement down one side of her body. Totally unnecessary and unpleasant, not only for the child, but for her family too. Please, please clear up your dog’s mess so nasty incidents like this can be avoided.

Littering on the Recreation Grounds – The amount of litter on the recreation ground is still on the increase, and the council would like to remind everyone using the grounds, that there are plenty of bins provided in strategic places for the depositing of your waste items. Our groundsman picked up four bin bags full of rubbish one morning, which, I am sure you will agree, is unacceptable.

Social Room – Just a quick update on how the refurbishment of the social room is going! The painting is nearly completed, and the new floor has been laid. If anyone has a celebration coming up and looking for a venue, by all means feel free to call the gym reception on 01379 852088 to arrange a viewing of the room.

Next Town Council Meeting

Wednesday 19th July at 7pm

in the Social Room in the Leisure Centre.

All are welcome to attend.

Archbishop Sancroft High School There was much to celebrate last half term, as you will read in our newsletter. At the same time it has been one of the most challenging, both personally and professionally, for me and those in our community. On the very first day of term we held a very moving assembly to remember the three young men whose lives were lost so tragically in Pulham. In the final week of the half term we held a minute's silence to reflect on the tragedy in Manchester. One of my friends and headteacher colleagues, Geoff Barton, wrote in a recent article following the bomb attack, a line that resonated with me…….”In house assemblies, in classrooms, in the lunch queue and on the field at break time, there will be a heightened awareness of how lucky we are – to be part of a community, to be with people who care, to be alive.”

Mr Cranmer, Headteacher

Boxing English Championships

Massive congratulations to Freddie Collings. Freddie competed at the Boxing English Championships in Milton Keynes in June. After a number of bouts, Freddie came third overall. Freddie is the third best boxer at his age and weight in the whole of England! Well done Freddie, what an achievement!

P E Department

Pepperell’s Present Plate

We were delighted to invite Chris Pepperell in to present the cooking plate to Daniella Pearce at the end of last term. After a Year 8 cook-off based on Pepperell’s pork sausages, the four winners and the best second place competed in the final blind cook using a chicken supreme.

The five pupils had fifteen minutes to plan their dish and choose from a range of vegetables and store cupboard items. They then had an hour to cook and present their dish for Chris and his daughter Sophie, an ex-ASHS pupil, to judge, based on organoleptic testing.

Daniella made a spicy chicken breast, with seasoned wedges, oven roast vegetables and a cheese béchamel. “This is the second year of this competition and the cooking has improved year on year. We look forward to seeing what the year 7 pupils come up with next year.” said Chris Pepperell. Daniella was presented with the plate during a house assembly and they all received a voucher for the shop and a trophy each to take home.

Mrs Josleyn, Food Tech Teacher

The A Team Produce a Prayer Tree for the ASHS Family

Following recent events, the A Team have been reflecting on the power of prayer and the importance of hope. The A Team have designed and made a prayer tree which has been placed outside the prayer space. Students from all years have been invited to join the A Team in adding their wishes, hopes and prayers to the tree. We hope that it provides students with an opportunity for reflection.

Harleston and District Historical Society At the meeting on 25

th May, members were entertained by an interesting,

informative and humorous talk by Liz Scott on the Living History of Blickling Hall. The first part of the talk was given in the character of a maid at the Hall in the 1930s and described not only the life of a servant but also gave us a picture of the many famous and powerful guests who visited the then owner, Lord Lothian. It was on his death, when British Ambassador to the United States, that the estate passed to the National Trust.

The second part of the presentation showed pictures of the Hall and gardens from earlier times, particularly at the end of the nineteenth century, as well as showing the way in which the present owners help create the life of the Hall in years gone by. After a short break, the evening closed with a short presentation on the month of May in history. The topic was the opening of the first Macdonalds in California in 1940 and how that business has grown from a hamburger stall to one that has 68 million customers worldwide every day.

The Museum is open Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 10am until 12.30pm and has an excellent display on local schools and educational establishments. If you haven’t been yet, it is well worth a visit. Who knows, you may find some family photos there!

This month in History.

During a French crisis over a military and civil revolt in Algeria, Charles de Gaulle was recalled from retirement to head an emergency government. Seen as the only person capable of ending the emergency, he was made the virtual dictator of France for a period of six months. He succeeded in bringing the situation under control but, by agreeing to Algerian independence, he created wide divisions in France which led to a wave of assassination attempts and terrorist activities such as highlighted by Frederick Forsyth’s book ‘The Day of the Jackal’. De Gaulle was President for ten years and saw the creation of the 5

th Republic. He left

office in 1968, the year of student riots, when a referendum failed to give him the support he sought.

He died at his home in Colombey les Deux Eglises on 9th November 1970.

He is today still one of the great French heroes and his name is coupled with those of Napoleon and Joan of Arc.

There are many ways to buy our food today. 60 years ago I remember my mother having to food shop nearly every day from a wide selection of different shops and markets. With the advent of out-of-town supermarkets in the ‘80s we only needed to stock up once

a week. And now, with internet ordering, we can have our order delivered to our door at a time to suit us. Monthly Farmers Markets in the late ‘90s brought back the idea of shopping locally and talking to, and buying direct from, the actual producer - usually once a month. Here in Harleston we are lucky to have both a weekly general market and a Country Market every Wednesday.

At the Harleston Country Market we have beef, bread, eggs, seasonal fruit and vegetables, chutneys, preserves and honey. Our bakers produce meat pies, ready meals, vegetarian quiches and a wide range of cakes, puddings and slices. And we are privileged to have a very longstanding and loyal base of customers. But we are aware that there are those who, for various reasons, can’t physically get to our market on a Wednesday.

That is why we at Harleston Country Market are part of a pilot scheme which is trialling alternative ways of reaching and delivering to local people. Potential customers who perhaps work, are unable to get out because of infirmity or small children or are just unwell. We will keep you posted on progress of this internet ordering and delivery scheme and, of course, let you know once we are ‘live’ and open for business.

Incidentally, we are always looking for new bakers, producers and growers. If you would like to be involved – just come along on a Wednesday and have a chat with the Market Manager. And if you want to order something to pick up from the next Wednesday market just call or e-mail the Market Manager before 6pm on Sunday to place your order.

Market dates for July: Wednesday 9.30am to 11am, King Georges Hall (entrance through alleyway between Broad Street and Old Market Place, parking at the rear) 5

th, 12

th, 19

th, 26

th

Special Events: On Sunday 2nd

July, we will have a large outdoor stall at the South Norfolk Show in Long Stratton.

Down at DC3 There is a famous phrase in the Psalms that says, 'I lift my eyes up to the mountains, where does my help come from'? (Psalm 121).

But after all the uncertainty of the last month since the election, I think we might need to swap that word 'help' for 'stability'. For where does our stability come from? Who can we rely on when it's clear that life changes almost on a whim, or that people can change and alter like the wind?

As Christians we believe God is the rock on which we can depend. Anyone who ever went to Sunday School as a child will know the story of the man who built his house upon the rock and the man who built it on sand.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7 v 24-27)

This was a parable that Jesus told, and it seems as relevant today as ever. When you can't rely on people or politics (or anything!) staying the same in this ever-changing world of ours, we believe you can depend on God! We believe He is the rock on which we can stand and who we can have confidence in, as He never changes and never lets us down.

The 'words of mine' Jesus refers to in this story are his teachings, which you can find in the New Testament, and they really do stand the test of time. Down here at DC3 we believe in the Bible as the unshakeable Word of God, and you can hear teaching from it every Sunday from 10.55am (with coffee and cake from 10.30am as if you needed any more persuading!) Please do come and see us, everyone is welcome.

Harleston & District Wives Group – May Meetings Harleston Wives went on their annual outing which, this year, was to Lowestoft. After all being collected on the bus a talkative journey began by everybody.

At Lowestoft we were dropped off at the Royal Hotel where we were all served excellently with a very delicious lunch. After lunchtime members had free time. While some sat and enjoyed a cup of tea, others either went for a bracing walk along the prom, went along to the shops or ended up in one of the arcades where lots of two pence were lost.

Homeward bound there was lots more laughter and chat after a lovely afternoon out.

Our next meeting, the final for this season, was the AGM followed by a beetle drive. The retiring committee at the AGM, with its present leader Daphne who commented on a very successful year, was thanked by our president Rita. A new committee was elected with a few changes with new leader Jill.

The beetle drive was played with much laughter and competition amongst everyone. The winners were Rose and Val with the “booby” won by Shirley and Pauline.

Bonus ball winner was Jackie and raffle winners included Rose, Shirley and Maureen.

A lovely summer was wished to all and looking forward to seeing everyone in the autumn.

Next season begins on 5th

September with some dates already booked by our secretary Ann.

Harleston - Your Town Harleston is rare in possessing between 150 and 200 very old buildings, dotted along the access routes and amassed in the centre of this ancient market town, almost unscathed from the “great fires” that devastated most of its neighbours. · These houses have layers, for even some that look modern have secrets within. Beneath that 20th Century, Victorian or Georgian façade stands a Stuart, Tudor or Medieval building. Often each era has added an additional room at the front or back as well as a brick face and a roof of pantiles or slate in place of thatch. To journey inside is to travel through the ages. · Harleston is also unlike its neighbours by not developing around the church or castle or alongside the river. Its reason-to-be? Its market place. · Perhaps it was planned this way in Medieval times, but it certainly ringed the old, vast centre with inns and shops which were in turn ringed by yards full of industry, a thriving supply base set in the midst of fertile fields, supplying the needs of both farmers and gentry. · Those droving animals here to sell stayed at the ever-open inns and purchased goods with the profits of their sales. Others came for the meat and other products of both Harleston and its surrounding area as well as those brought by other traders. · (Indeed, it was not just the animals brought to market, for the visitors and traders were a captive market themselves!) · Even Kings, like Stephen, Henry II and Charles II, brought their entourages and armies through the town. This continued into WWII with a legendary meeting between later Commanders-in –Chief, Churchill and Eisenhower held here, whilst the inns and shops rocked with the presence of thousands of USAAF airmen as Harleston was ringed by airfields. · It was also a place for acting against treachery, with the Swan built with the proceeds received for giving evidence against Kett for his rebellion in 1549. Later Kett’s cousin was rewarded for informing on those planning to start a rebellion at Harleston Fair in 1570.

Harleston U3A The annual fee for Harleston U3A membership includes a subscription to the national organisation’s magazine which is published five times a year. The title “Third Age Matters” while obviously relating to all kinds of topics connected to the U3A and its thousand local branches, also encapsulates, in three short words, the ethos of the whole movement. Your “third age” i.e. post full time work and family responsibilities DOES MATTER and ought to be a period of satisfaction and active enjoyment of life in the company of other like minded individuals.

Curious to find out more? Take a look at our website www.u3a.org.harleston which is an excellent source of information about established interest groups, outings and speakers.

Two new groups, “Real Ale Appreciation” and “Learning Your Way Round eBay” have leaders in place and are ready to launch.

Judith Buckfield, one of our founder members, ran the popular “Church Crawlers” for several years but has moved out of the area. We are really pleased that the group, now led by Paula Robinson, will carry on.

The proposed “Creative Writing” group has seven keen potential members but is looking for a leader. Interest has also been shown in “Music Making”, “Classical Music Appreciation and “Spanish”. It is quite possible, of course, to form and run a group without a permanent leader – as a “job share” or a co-operative. There is a register of more than fifty subject advisors ready to share ideas and experience just a phone call or e-mail away!

Apart from the website, information can be obtained from Membership Secretary, Kim on 01986 788149 or come along to one of our regular meetings held at 2pm every third Wednesday of the month

at the Masonic Rooms, Harleston.

A special event congratulating people who have successfully completed an apprenticeship in Norfolk in the last academic year is being held on Wednesday 12 th July at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich. The graduation ceremony, co-ordinated by the Apprenticeships Norfolk Network, is in its fourth year and aims to highlight the importance and value of apprenticeships to employers, learners and the economy. Four apprentices who will be celebrating their scrolls on 12th July have been employed by the Apprenticeships Norfolk network through NCC. Chris Betts, Kieron Buxton, Katie Lomonossoff and Jessica Whyte have all completed a two-year apprenticeship that enabled them to train for a formal Level 3 qualification in Youth Work. Tickets to the event must be booked in advance at www.apprenticeshipsnorfolk.org or by calling 0344 800 8024.

Greater Anglia is investing £1.4bn in new trains and carriages which will replace its current 30 year old fleet towards the end of 2020. As well as including more seats, state-of-the-art air conditioning, Wi-Fi, USB and plug points, the carriages will be able to operate a 90-minute service from Norwich to London. The new trains will also allow for quicker and increased services across the Greater Anglia network and quicker recovery from disruptions.

A new £53,000 boardwalk at Burgh Castle Roman Fort has opened waterside paths to everyone, allowing more people to enjoy the western side of the fort and far reaching views across the River Waveney and Breydon Marshes. A number of partners came together to make the project happen with NCC’s Norfolk Trails team working closely with brand new charity Pathmakers who built the boardwalk, the Norfolk Archaeological Trust (which owns and manages the site in partnership with English Heritage), the Norwich Access Forum who carried out a wheelchair audit of the site, and the Norfolk Local Access Forum. I hope many people will visit the site and enjoy the boardwalk which forms part of our Angles Way Trail

Congratulations to Harleston Magpies on their fantastic achievement of winning the National Mixed Crown at the Lee Valley Hockey Centre in London; this is the second time in three years.

I was very pleased to present certificates to the volunteers who help out at Harleston Library. This is in recognition of the valuable contribution to the library and local residents.

Good luck to all of the new businesses that are starting in the town.

Farewell Jake Friday afternoon saw us saying cheerio to Jake Kubala, a very popular member of our staff, as he moves on to become a ‘Community Connector’ for South Norfolk Council.

Jake began his time with us as a very enthusiastic, young volunteer working on the information desk and, very soon, became involved with the Jobs Club. When the post of Information Centre Coordinator became available in June 2011, he was the obvious choice to fill the position.

Running jobs clubs at Diss and Dereham were all part of his work , which also included running IT courses and work for Norfolk Community Foundation. This was in addition to his leadership of the team of volunteers who work on the desk of the information centre.

The real highlight in recent times was his involvement with the project ‘Jobs Club on Show’.

This was a huge success which succeeded in its aim to get as many participants as possible into work.

We are very sorry to see Jake go, and wish him the best of good fortune as

he moves on to the next stage of his career.

100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum As stated in the February edition, the airfield at Thorpe Abbotts was built 75 years ago and the

100th Bomb Group and 8th Air force are also celebrating their 75th Anniversary this year respectively since activation.

Our own Inspirational museum is celebrating 40 years since renovation started to build the museum and is still looked upon very much as a work ongoing with regular changes to displays as more artefacts are donated.

During early May, the volunteers were busy when, on Wednesday 10th May

we were honoured with visits by two Veterans who were based at Thorpe Abbotts during the 2nd World War, together with a coach load of Veterans’ family members and 100th Bomb Group Foundation Members.

Joe Urice rose to the rank of Sergeant and was a Tail Gunner with 351st squadron. Whilst Dewey Christopher was Ground Crew Chief with 351st Squadron on various aircraft; he received the Bronze Star.

During their visit and to honour them and all personnel who served at the base we were treated to a flypast by four KC135 aircraft of the current day 100th air refuelling wing who themselves are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year at their base at Mildenhall. This was organised by the base commander, Colonel Tom Torkelson to whom we are deeply indebted.

Following the flypast, the families and Veterans had the opportunity to chat to some of the visitors and volunteers who had turned out in force for the event, the veterans spoke of their time at the base and memories of those days all those years ago

Two days later the Veterans and other guests returned to Thorpe Abbotts for a much more private and poignant event. Following brief speeches, a wreath was laid by Steve Crosby, (son of Harry H Crosby who had been a Navigator with 418 Squadron) in honour of all the personnel who served at the base.

Following the photo some of the Museum Volunteers used their cars to take our guests on a tour of what is left of the airfield giving the Veterans the opportunity to once more stand on hardstands where the aircraft that one had flown, in and the other had spent a great deal of time repairing, once stood. A memory that they will take home with them

Once our guests had returned, a meal was on hand for them to enjoy before several speeches and presentations were made. This event had been organised as a low key and private event to allow our Veterans to relax and enjoy their visit especially as at 92 and 94 years respectively it may be the last time that they are able to cross the pond to see us.

Time passed all so quickly on this visit and a hat doffing departure from Joe Urice seemed somehow inappropriate as it is the people of our nation who should be saluting him and all those, who along with our own troops, fought to save our country and although our guests are now back in the USA, this museum will ensure that all those who served at this base will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN

Just when we thought after a week of visiting Veterans and American friends was over, we were thrilled to welcome Chris Barrett whose wife's great Uncle F/O Harry E Edeburn was killed in action whilst he was a copilot on B17 Squawkin hawk with 349 Squadron. Chris spent several hours talking with Tony Mark and Gordon Debenham who, as young boys, had lived near the base and who chatted to Chris about their wartime memories whilst Chris shared what he knew of his wife's relative with the pair and other volunteers, Chris had been hosted for a few days by Richard Tallent one of our hard-working volunteers, then on Sunday afternoon a visit from Phil Snyder and his wife; Phil is the son of Bombadier Melvin D Snyder from the Robert Ellis Crew of 351st Squadron. Phil can be seen here with his wife in front of the 351 squadron emblem. What a wonderful way to end what had been for all involved an emotional and truly memorable week.

The museum continues to be open at weekends and Bank holidays until the end of October and Wednesdays until the end of September. A number of visiting organisations will be joining us over the summer months and a couple of dates for your diaries - on the 25

th

June 100+ vintage & classic cars will be joining us for a couple of hours between 11.30am and 2pm whilst on Sunday 2

nd July the Pink Tractor Run

will depart from the Wood Lane end of the old airfield at 11.30am and pass the Museum gates a few minutes later, These wonderful ladies are raising funds for Breast Cancer research so why not pay us a visit and support two great causes?

Later in the year on 3rd

September, we will be hosting an event called Remembering the Past when several people who were youngsters during the war who lived near the base will be telling their stories of those far-gone days. If you lived locally and you have stories to tell or if you lived in the Nisson Huts after the war and would like to join us, we would love to hear from you. You can email [email protected]. Or telephone 01379 740708 at weekends between 10am and 5pm or call in and see us. Other details of the event will follow on our website and Facebook site.

Flags in July
