On Monday, August 25th, Harley Marine Services hosted the 3rd annual Fall Invitational at Glendale Country Club in Bellevue, Washington. The sold-out course was filled by customers, vendors, bankers, friends and supporters of Harley Marine. Sunshine and a light breeze made for a beautiful day on the course filled with camaraderie, competitions and contests. The morning began with registration where guests received a “stuffed” goodie bag and were invited to participate in a putting contest. Swedish Medical Center was also available to take blood pressure tests prior to the round. At 11:30am, we commenced the day with a shotgun start. Players worked their way around the course and ended back at the clubhouse for a cocktail hour, dinner and program. Some of the evening highlights included a chip-off, announcement of winners, a delicious barbeque dinner, and a live auction featuring amazing bid opportunities including a trip to Italy, Dr. Kaplan’s photography and a $5,092 gift card to Gordon James Fine Diamonds. Guests also viewed a heart-felt video produced by Raintree Productions showcasing Harley Marine’s support of the Kaplan Cancer Research Fund and how it has an impact on our local community including many of our friends and family. Jim Flies of Harley Marine Services, and his wife Ellen – a patient of Dr. Kaplan, were showcased throughout the film. After the film, we asked our guests to help us “Fund a Cure” for cancer by raising their paddle. That night, we were fortunate enough to have a match in the room of $125,000. Special thanks to Lorna Stern and her family for contributing $100,000 towards the
match and to the Weinstein Family for contributing the additional $25,000. We truly appreciate your support and generosity!

To view the video, please follow the below link. http://vimeo.com/104455300 All proceeds raised throughout the day and evening program
benefited the Kaplan Cancer Research Fund of Swedish Medical Center. Dr. Henry Kaplan is a beloved oncologist and the lead researcher for many clinical trials currently available at the Swedish Cancer Institute. Research and clinical trials are the primary way that progress is made in finding better approaches to treatment. Such trials also give patients access to promising new medications and procedures before
they are widely available. The Kaplan Research Fund is focused on different types of cancer research, including breast and hematologic cancers. Dr. Kaplan’s advancements in research improve the lives of cancer patients today and strive to save the lives of cancer patients tomorrow. And now, for the best news, with everyone’s support and willingness, Harley Marine Services raised a grand total of $541,060 to benefit the Kaplan Cancer Research Fund. This could not have been done without the corporate support we received from our sponsors. On the following page is a list of all of our sponsors – thank you! We would also like to thank all of our volunteers on the course and behind the scenes as well as Harley and Lela Franco for their compassionate dedication to our local community and their leadership in helping us reach this remarkable achievement. Thank you!

HARLEY MARINE TO THE RESCUE On August 12th, Harley Marine received an emergency call from a salvage company regarding a distressed vessel 700 nautical miles off the coast of Northern California. The vessel, Pine Galaxy, had experienced an engine room fire, which resulted in loss of power to the entire vessel. Without hesitation, our vessel rescue team immediately came together to create a towage plan so that we could safely recover the vessel. After acceptance from the salvage company, the Millennium Falcon, a tractor tug based in the Pacific Northwest under the Starlight Marine Services PNW flag, departed for the scene. Prior to departure, the Falcon was outfitted with the appropriate towage gear and supplies as well as a generator, stovetop and portable heaters for the disabled vessel. An owner’s representative also made the voyage onboard the Falcon. It took the tug three days to reach the Pine Galaxy. Upon arriving, the Falcon crew immediately made tow and started the towing process. Once the Falcon approached San Francisco Bay, the Z-Three delivered a dozen state and federal regulators to the disabled vessel to inspect and ensure a safe arrival into the Bay. Additionally, the Ahbra Franco and Z-Three helped the Millennium Falcon escort the Pine Galaxy safely to port. The tow also had Coast Guard helicopter and two cutter escorts into San Francisco Bay. A special thanks to the crew onboard the Millennium Falcon for their professionalism throughout the towage process. This was a true team effort that required clear communication, precise details and a high quality of service. Harley Marine’s towing efforts were also coordinated with Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. Crew of the Millennium Falcon: Captain Neil Billingsley, Captain Travis McGrath, Mate Mitchell Hetterle, Chief Engineer Kevin Treadwell, AB Deckhand Roy Dusenbury Crew of the Z-Three: Captain Jason Lorenz, Mate Trainee Stephanie Sandoval, Engineer Michael Limon, AB Deckhand Michael Schantz Crew of the Ahbra Franco: Captain Mike Link, Captain David Cadiz, Engineer Christopher Badouin, AB Deckhand Eric Vuoso Congratulations to all for the safe arrival of the vessel.

SAFETY SPOTLIGHT This month’s Safety Spotlight is on Captain Richard Benoit, Captain on the Tug HMS Justice with Harley Marine NY. Captain Benoit has over 45 years of service in the maritime industry. Rick started with HMNY in December of 2006. He started his maritime career in 1969 with the US Navy, following in the footsteps of his father who was a career Naval Airman. Post Navy, he sailed as an AB/Bosun on research vessels including one year in the Artic aboard the RV Hero, a 125 ft. wooden motorsailer owned by the National Science Foundation. From 1975 to 1978, he earned two degrees with honors from the University of Rhode Island in Maritime Science & Resources. From 1978 to 1981, he sailed as an AB on various vessels including tankers, drill and research. In 1981, he obtained his Third’s Mates license and Master 1,000 GRT Freight & Towing, which was later changed to Master 1,600 GRT. He then sailed as Mate/Master until 1988. From 1998 to 2006, he sailed as Master aboard Coastal Tankers and Tugs moving petroleum products up & down the east coast of the United States. Then, in 2006, he joined Harley Marine Services as Captain onboard the HMS Liberty and then, early this year, took command of the Tug HMS Justice. From the beginning of his career in the maritime industry, he has taken pride in his work and kept safety in the forefront of his mind. He is always trying to bring a safety culture to his crewmates and safety ideas to management. With his experience in the industry, he has brought many great ideas up through his safety tips and articles he turns into the Safety Incentive Program. Rick has worked hard since starting with HMNY, always making sure his crew is properly trained and complying with the safety policies onboard. He is very active in
2
the company’s Safety Incentive Program, always sending in great information for others to learn from. Rick is a leader, with his mind set in the safety of his crewmates and the company. Richard Benoit: I'm a lucky guy to have been able to make my living on the water and have had the pleasure of sailing with a lot of good shipmates over the years. What more can one ask for? Marco A. Velez: I have worked with Captain Rick Benoit since I started working with HMNY. From the beginning, Captain Rick has been a good example to follow. He is a professional, safety conscious, mariner with very good work ethics. From the time I started all the way up to being promoted to Operations Supervisor, I learned a lot from Captain Rick. I believe Captain Rick is one of the best captains I have had the pleasure to work with.
The Portland office has now been painted to match the Harley Marine exterior color scheme.

Cardiovascular Health Month What is high blood pressure? High blood pressure is the amount of stress on your arteries when your heart pumps blood. Your top number measures pressure when the heart beats, and your bottom number measures pressure when the heart is at rest. Normal blood pressure is under 120 and under 80. Consult with your physician to get your numbers and build a plan to control your blood pressure.
You need to know your blood pressure! High blood pressure or HBP is also known as the “silent killer”. There are no symptoms of HBP except for a possibly fatal stroke or other serious health complications. Many people with HBP have experienced vision loss, memory loss, damage to the heart, damaged arteries and kidney failure. You might be more susceptible to high blood pressure than you think! One in three Americans have above normal BP levels, and 7 out of 10 people who suffered a heart attack or stroke had HBP. Knowing your blood pressure is incredibly important in predicting and preventing serious medical complications High blood pressure can affect your career!
One of the biggest requirements in obtaining a Merchant Mariner License is being free from any medical conditions posing a risk of sudden incapacitations, which would affect working on a vessel… This obviously
2
includes any risk of stroke (caused by high blood pressure). Getting your blood pressure under control is incredibly important for your health and for your safety when working on a vessel. Well how do I get my blood pressure under control? The first step is talking to your doctor. They will know what steps you need to take to ensure you get your BP under control. This could include a diet and exercise plan, or more extensive measures involving medication. Getting your BP under control is incredibly important. If you find you have HBP, there is an incredible amount of information online that can help you take the first steps to lowering your BP! For more information:

Pictured is the progress made on the tug portion of our first ATB currently under construction. The tug, to be named Emery Zidell, had to have the top three stories and wheelhouse removed so that she would fit under the US90 bridge in Morgan City, Louisiana. Both units (tug & tower) will now be shifted under the highway bridge and then through the Railroad bridge to Conrad’s other yard to be reassembled and painted before delivery to Harley Marine.

SAFETY INCENTIVE PROGRAM
Winning Tip: By: Timothy Picou, Harley Marine Gulf
A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING Everyone should help keep their work area clean and clear of obstruction. If your work area has been neglected for a longtime, it will take a lot more effort to clean up. If you take the time, you will create a safe work environment for everyone. It takes the least amount of time to clean up and to get started on projects when things are where they're supposed to be. Winning Article: By: Timothy Picou, Harley Marine Gulf Barges are slow, heavy vessels which need skillful handling. Once those skills are mastered, they are easy to steer and very simple to handle. Keeping yourself and you’re crew safe is essential to a successful career.
1. Accidents rarely happen in the wheelhouse: they happen out on the deck. 2. Learn to handle lines properly. Treat lines with respect: never step on them, keep them coiled up,
don't stand with them around your feet. 3. Accidents can happen because of poor communication between master and crew: be sure that
instructions (pre-arrival and pre-departure conference) are clearly understood. 4. When you have visitors on board make sure they are fully briefed (visitor safety orientation). 5. Many accidents occur as a result of boats getting hung up in locks by lines becoming jammed: learn
how to avoid this. 6. Don't try to stop a moving boat by hand. Take a turn around a bit and watch line bits and never put
your hand in harm’s way. 7. Man overboard is a rare occurrence, but most likely to happen in locks. Be extra careful. 8. Keep lines and deck equipment tidy and always in the same place.
Just when you thought you saw one too many ALS Ice Bucket challenge photos – the crew of the Gyrfalcon got involved with a cold splash of freezing Alaska water. Brr! Thank you Chris Iszler, Roel Villamor, Mark Hurst, Carlos Trinidad and Tully McConnell for your participation and more importantly for your generous donation to ALS.

DON MEBERG RETIRES It is with mixed emotions that Harley Marine announces the retirement of long-time friend and employee, Don Meberg. Although we are so happy for Don in his new adventure and chapter of life, we will truly miss his “can-do” spirit and positive attitude in the office. Don has been employed with Harley Marine for 20 years and has been a true team player and advocate. He will officially retire at the end of the year and in the meantime he is training several employees to take over his role in attempts to fill his shoes while he is gone.
On Friday, August 8th Harley Marine celebrated his tenure with a retirement party at the Harley and Lela Franco Maritime Center. Decorated in a Norwegian theme that included a full Norwegian fare with Swedish meatballs, cucumber salad and of course Marzipan cake, Don would not have it any other way. Guests and family shared fun stories and memories of Don throughout his career. The highlight of the evening was hearing Don’s youngest daughter, Beth Meberg, dedicate a song to her father. A special touch to a special night. Thank you Don for all of your hard work, dedication and loyalty to Harley Marine – you will be missed!

AUGUST EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
Starlight Marine Services
Jon Maciel
Starlight Marine Services would like to recognize Jon Maciel as the
August Employee of the Month. Jon is the lead tankerman on the
Bernie Briere. He comes to work with a great attitude and work ethic
and gives 110% everyday he is on shift. He does his job and does it
well. When trying to follow Jon on the barge or dock one needs to put
running shoes on to keep up with him, he knows one speed and that’s
full ahead. It is always a pleasure to visit Jon on the Bernie. Thanks Jon
for all that you do at Starlight Marine.
Olympic Tug & Barge
John Stromberg
Olympic Tug & Barge would like to recognize John Stromberg as the
August Employee of the Month. As we prepare to bring the newest
additions of Harley’s fleet to the West Coast, one of the biggest
challenges we face is training the crews. Whether existing
crewmembers are attending a simulator class, or upgrading their
license, positions need to be filled throughout our fleet. If it wasn’t for
people like John Stromberg, we wouldn’t be able to cover these
necessities. John has been moving from assignment to assignment
without hesitation, covering other’s schedules so we can continue to
train and prepare for the arrival of the ATBs this year. Thank you John
for your flexibility and can-do attitude. We appreciate the sacrifices
you have made to help business grow.
