Stephen A. Harmon was born on June 15, 1945. A life-long scholar, he received his B.A. and Master’s from San Francisco State University. Dr. Harmon completed his Ph.D. in West African Islamic History at the University of California at Los Angeles doing extensive studies in Mali and Senegal. His students remember his passion for his work and his “ability as a storyteller to make history come to life.”

Dr. Harmon spent much of his life traveling the globe, studying, and teaching. Twice a Fullbright Scholar (1983 & 1989), he also spoke several languages, notably French, Spanish, Bambara, and Arabic. In 1994, Dr. Harmon became an Associate Professor of African and Middle Eastern history at Pittsburg State University. His love for other cultures and people was shown throughout his life. He was known for opening his home to Pitt State’s International students and for always being a welcoming presence.

He worked in conjunction with PSU’s Military Science program, preparing cadets with the cultural and historical background for their service in the Middle East. In 2008, Dr. Harmon gave a talk about rethinking terrorism at a United Nations workshop in Italy.

He is survived by his wife, Olive Sullivan and his five children. Dr. Harmon passed away on December 26, 2020, at Via Christi Hospital, Pittsburg. He is well-remembered for his kind smile, supportive nature, and “rare gift for making people comfortable and welcome.”
