Conductor Iván Fischer is becoming increasingly well-known as a composer. He began writing around the age of twenty, in a rather avant-garde style, but composing was sidelined as he became more and more absorbed by conducting. Some thirty years later, the urge to take up the pen again became irresistible. Fischer claims it was "a feeling as though I found my true self." He continues to describe himself not as a composer but as a "composing conductor." For he credits the many composers whose music he conducts as his teachers and his sources of inspiration. Wim Van Hasselt, professor of trumpet at the University of Music Freiburg, presents this colorful program of music for trumpet in a variety of combinations. Wilhelm von Grunelius's Chant d'Automne was inspired by Baudelaire's poem of the same name. It is one of two world premierès recorded here, alongside Iván Fischer's Eine Deutsch-Jiddische Kantate, which employs texts by Avrom Sutzkever, Rainer Maria Rilke, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and others. The use of texts is a recurring theme in this program. At the end of the final movement of Hindemith's Trumpet Sonata, the composer incorporates Bach’s chorale Alle Menschen müssen sterben. This recording features a variety of soloists including Iván Fischer's daughter, soprano Nora Fischer, and both world première recordings are performed by the Budapest Festival Orchestra.

In January 1783, Mozart advertised in the Wiener Zeitung 'the publication of three new, recently completed piano concertos' which could even be played with quartet accompaniment – thus enabling him to reach a wider public. Dardanus is typical of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s operas. It contains impressive, innovative music that is rich with dramatic complexity. His works combined clever harmonic devices, colorful orchestrations and a wide range of emotional expression that often caused controversy among those who favored the music of his rival, Jean-Baptiste Lully. Although Rameau’s more forward-looking style would eventually win out, the conflict between these two great composers made for one of opera’s more colorful chapters. Dardanus was a less-than-spectacular success at its première and underwent at least two extensive revisions. These subsequent versions simplified the plot, but also involved the removal of excellent music. Modern revivals of Dardanus, such at the one staged here by Ensemble Pygmalion, have restored some of the lost music while maintaining dramatic coherence.

Like Vivaldi, Pietro Antonio Locatelli was both an outstanding instrumentalist and an erudite composer. He dazzled the whole of Europe with his virtuoso skills. To be sure, his Concerti Grossi owe a great deal to the model of Corelli – except that, in some respects, the disciple shows up the master. The Freiburger Barockorchester and Gottfried von der Goltz attack the virtuosic technical demands of these Baroque gems with gusto. Only Nicolò Paganini risked passages of comparable difficulty.

Earning a GRAMMY© nomination and Gramophone Magazine’s Young Artist of the Year award in 2015, Joseph Moog is one of the finest young virtuoso pianists of our time. On this release, Moog turns to Chopin's piano sonatas. Piano Sonata No.1 is a rarely heard work. It shows the young composer as yet untouched by the influences of Beethoven and the other great composer-pianists of the period. It owes more to Mozart and the late classical period. By the time he composed the Piano Sonata No.2, Chopin had fully absorbed the early romanticism of Hummel and Field, and developed a strong distinctive voice. The slow movement, a funeral march, is one of the most famous pieces of music ever composed. Piano Sonata No.3 is a masterpiece, one of the greatest works for piano of the 19th century, and displays the total mastery Chopin had achieved by the end of his tragically short life. This Onyx recording represents yet another outstanding achievement by Joseph Moog.

Master & Pupil focuses on three of the great pianist composers of the 19th century who represent the beginning of a long line of masters and pupils. The young Carl Czerny became a long term pupil and friend of Beethoven at the early age of 10, performing some of the concertos, and working with Beethoven on preparing works for their premiers. A brilliant virtuoso and a highly skilled composer, his legacy lives on to this day in his studies. His reputation was held in high regard by Liszt, Brahms and Debussy, and it was the young Liszt that Czerny took under his wing in 1819. Liszt later dedicated his Transcendental Studies to Czerny. In 1823 Beethoven saw the 12 year-old Liszt perform and after kissed the child on the forehead. Liszt’s monumental B minor Sonata is the true heir to Beethoven’s visionary late sonatas. Melvyn Tan has a strong association with the music of Beethoven having made pioneering recordings for EMI of the piano concertos and several of the sonatas that include a performance on Beethoven’s own instrument. On this disc, Tan plays on a modern Steinway.

Originally released in 1996, Le Onde was Ludovico Einaudi's first solo piano album and first big success. The album is inspired by Virginia Woolf's novel The Waves. Einaudi writes that he was "really intrigued by the form of the novel, which is very complex and interesting because some parts are written in italics and others in normal text. The parts in italics are like a cadence running through the book." The piece is divided into parts, each repeated until the coda brings it all to a close. The hypnotic melody flows and surges depicting the movements of the ocean. Available now as a 2 LP 180g vinyl edition.

Ludovico Einaudi's album In a Time Lapse was composed over a period of two years and recorded in October 2012 in a monastery near Verona. Epic and emotional as his bestselling album Divenire, experimental and adventurous as Nightbook, In a Time Lapse goes further by incorporating baroque and Italian folk music, late romantic strings textures, and a wide variety of colors through percussion and electronics. The theme is a deep reflection on the idea of time; in the words of Einaudi, "When you get conscious that our time is limited, it's the moment where you try to fill that space with all your energy and emotions…and live every moment of your life fully as when you were a child." The album features Einaudi's band and the string orchestra I Virtuosi Italiani. The connection between Sergei Prokofiev and Mstislav Rostropovich was strong and remarkably fruitful. Several works were either written for or premièred by the great cellist, including the Cello Sonata Op.119. When Prokofiev was in poor health, he asked Rostropovich for help in rewriting his Op.58 Cello Concerto. The result was the Symphony-Concerto Op.125. After the composer's death, the cellist collaborated with Kabalevsky to complete the unfinished Cello Concertino Op.132.
