Shostakovich’s twenty-four preludes and fugues have become so closely associated with Tatiana Nikolaeva, considered by some to be their ‘offi cial interpreter,’ that many critics have concluded her approach is ‘the only way to perform them’ without looking more deeply into the matter. Yet this collection is brimming with fascinating answers for anyone who takes the trouble to ask the right questions. Alexander Melnikov has started from scratch and come up with his own, eminently musical solutions.

In the May issue of Classica magazine, the distinguished Harmonie Ensemble and director Steven Richman received a CHOC award for their April harmonia mundi release, Gershwin By Grofé.

harmonia mundi travels to Spain in May, bringing listeners the gift of Manuel Blasco de Nebra’s strikingly beautiful Piano Sonatas played by fellow Andalusian Javier Perianes (p.3). The label also offers the highly anticipated second volume of Richard Egarr’s Bach Well-Tempered Clavier (p.4) and the fi rst volume of violinist Isabelle Faust’s traversal of the Sonatas & Partitas Vol.1 (p.5). Chopin is also a focus on harmonia mundi with two releases from Van Cliburn gold medalists: Nobuyuki Tsujii’s Piano Concerto (p.6) and Olga Kern’s Piano Sonatas (p.7). Other priorities include Mozart symphonies with René Jacobs (p.8) and more Baltic choral music from Paul Hillier and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir (p.9). Hyperion has two big winners in May, with Steven Osborne’s Beethoven Sonatas (p.17) and the debut release by BBC New Generation Artist Viviane Hagner in volume 8 of the Romantic Violin Concerto series (p.19). Three more classical priority titles round out the month — a moving choral collection entitled Mandorla featuring Gloriae Dei Cantores (p.16), Valery Gergiev’s searing performance of the Rachmaninov Symphony No.2 for LSO Live (p.23), and an all-Dvorák disc with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra featuring the Requiem and Symphony No.8 (p.25). In non-classical releases, World Village priorities include Epica by tango artist Liliana Barrios (p.28), alCANTARaMANUEL by fl amenco star Mayte Martín (p.29), Cuban son group Sierra Maestra’s Sonando Ya (p.31) and the enchanting, cross-cultural album Nkolo by Lokua Kanza (p.33).

Javier Perianes invites us to discover the keyboard works of a composer who, like himself, was a native of . The heir to Scarlatti in many respects, the Hispano-Neapolitan composer Manuel Blasco de Nebra (1750-1784) combined the musical fl avors of his own natural heritage with the popular forms of the day. The sonatas and pastorales presented on this disc shed light on the multiple facets of Blasco de Nebra’s creative genius, alas cut short all too soon: he died at the age of just thirty-four.

In Book I (1722) of his Well-Tempered Clavier, J.S. Bach set off on an unprecedented passage through all the tonalities available to him on the

keyboard. Using the tuning which research suggests Bach himself advocated, Richard Egarr completes his acclaimed project with this inspired reading of Book II, where Bach (after a decade-long genesis) revisits his ambitious scheme to produce another monumental collection.

“No one can doubt that Egarr loves and understands Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier.

Isabelle Faust has gone back to the original manuscript sources to offer us her versions of these iconic masterpieces of the violin repertoire. In Bach’s time, music for solo instruments was still little explored territory, and his Sonatas and Partitas immediately established themselves as a benchmark, technically challenging and brimming with creativity.

After a decade immersed in the great Mozart operas (to universal critical acclaim) René Jacobs returns to the late symphonies, l e ad ing th e ou t s t and ing Freiburger Barockorchester. As with his previous recordings, his unique, operatic approach

to classical-period symphonies brings new life to these scores, particularly in terms of phrasing and clarity of texture. Jacobs says of his approach to this music, “A lot of people think period instrument performance means everything fast. I stick very much to the drama and the delivery of speech. I know that, say, Mozart’s own tempi were faster than what is now usual, but, on the other hand, there are also moments when time must stand still.”

“There is simply one word for Jacobs’ musical direction — enchanting.”— THE INDEPENDENT

Along with Schnabel, in the fi rst half of the 20th century Edwin Fischer was generally regarded as the greatest interpreter of the Germanic classics. This was the period when recording came of age and many fi rst recorded performances, still thought amongst the greatest even today, were set down by Fischer. Supreme among them were the fi rst complete recording of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier and the Mozart concertos presented here as a budget priced 3CD set. Also included are most of Fisher’s solo recordings of Mozart and his only recording of a Haydn concerto.

Dutton’s second volume of David Matthews’ symphonies presents the second and sixth, among the most engaging symphonies of our time. “A glorious sixth,” said The Times after the Prom premiere in 2007. Incorporating Vaughan Williams’ hymn tune “Down Ampney,” it continues the British tradition in memorable and lyrical style. As the Sunday Times critic wrote, “It is indubitably a work to listen to again.” It is coupled with the involving second symphony, a large-scale single movement whose lyricism contrasts with the exciting writing for percussion in an exuberant central episode.

Stephen Dodgson is the approachable face of contemporary music. After the success of Dutton’s recording of Dodgson’s String Quartets, the label offers a survey of Dodgson orchestral works that the composer calls Essays for Orchestra. Dodgson’s memorable treatment of the orchestra is exciting and lyrical by turns and is played in fi ne style by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by David Lloyd-Jones.

Listening to Elgar’s beloved Sea Pictures sung by a male voice will be an eye-opening experience for all Elgarians, making one wonder why it had not been done before. Baritone Roderick Williams is featured in this program of orchestral song cycles, which also features the world premiere recording of Elgar’s songs for Pageant of Empire, Ivor Gurney’s Lights Out and Michael Hurd’s Shore Leave.

Reissue of Dutton Epoch CDLX 7114 & CDLX 7123Edmund Rubbra’s String Quartets span his career, running from 1933 to 1977. The second is possibly the best known, but as a group they make an unmissable pendant to the symphonies. Possibly the most important string quartet cycle by any British composer, these Dutton recordings by the Dante Quartet enjoyed a very positive critical reception when they fi rst appeared and have now been re-packaged as a specially-priced boxed set.

Dutton now aims to fi ll this gap in the catalog, starting with the fi rst volume in a series of discs featuring Ashton’s piano music, featuring Canadian pianist Leslie De’Ath. These sonatas probably date from the late nineteenth century but were published in the 1920s, and are the most signifi cant body of piano music by a British composer before Bax.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe talented American choir Gloriae Dei Cantores offers a selection of music that allows the listener to experience the “mandorla” — a sacred, spiritual space that bridges

the human and the divine. Their new Super Audio CD features three visionary works — the Mass for Double Choir by Frank Martin, the Four Psalms by Edvard Grieg, and The Cherubic Hymn by Howard Hanson. These three 20th century composers and their works are tied together not by creed, conviction, nationality (although all three have some roots in Scandinavia and the Netherlands), or style, but by their illuminations of humanity’s need for salvation and their expressions of the intimacy and glory of these sacred encounters between heaven and earth.

“I’ve singled out this marvelous group time and time again… the choir brings a degree of spiritual sincerity and power to their singing that few choirs,

professional or amateur can match.”— AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE

Performances of such passionate humility, such musical intelligence, such subtlety and yet such instinctive understanding of the music are rare indeed. This disc features three of Beethoven’s most celebrated sonatas and the miniature Op 79.

“He looks inside the music for the basic threads that hold it together, and comes up not with gauze, but with velvet.”

The Florestan Trio is one of Britain’s best-loved chamber groups, and its many Hyperion recordings a re rout ine ly acc la imed as benchmark versions of the repertoire. The

three works on this CD cover the complete span of what is usually thought of as the Czech school of composition. Smetana, regarded as the founding father, fi rst showed the way to bring traditional dance and song into the mainstream of European composition, forging a national style. Eben, who died in 2007, was one of the most distinguished composers who carried this line to the present day. But, as these three contrasting pieces demonstrate, Czech composers were subject to very different kinds of infl uence at different times. Smetana’s trio, an early work, shows more infl uence from the mainstream giants of the time — particularly Schumann and Liszt — than it does from any ‘folk’ elements. By the time Martinu wrote his fi rst piano trio he was immersed in the exciting cosmopolitan culture of twentieth-century Paris. And Petr Eben took the neoclassicism of Martinu and his contemporaries, and developed his own individual approach to it.

Hyperion’s Romantic Violin Concerto series reaches volume eight, and the music of the Belgian composer Henry Vieuxtemps, himself widely considered the fi nest violinist in Europe after the death of Paganini. Listening to the repertoire recorded here, he certainly deserves to be ranked among the most important composers for the violin in the mid-nineteenth century. Vieuxtemps never indulged in sheer virtuosity for its own sake; instead in his concertos and chamber works he brought a more classical dimension to the violin repertoire in place of the technically brilliant variations and fantasies on popular operatic themes that were so popular with audiences. The concertos are played here by the young virtuoso Viviane Hagner, a former BBC New Generation artist, acclaimed for her highly intelligent musicality and passionate artistry, in her Hyperion debut.

Howard Shelley’s acclaimed series of the complete Piano Sonatas of Clementi reaches its penultimate volume. In the latter half of the 1790s, when all the sonatas and sonatinas heard in this recording (with the exception of the Sonata Op 46) were published, Clementi apparently devoted his energies mainly to teaching. His pupils included members of well placed families in London who were able to meet his reported fee of one guinea per lesson. He also had among his students aspiring professionals, including J B Cramer, Theresa Jansen, Benoit-August Bertini and John Field. The sonatas heard here, owing to their technical diffi culty, appear for the most part to be addressed to such students and other accomplished pianists—and perhaps for Clementi’s own performance in private circles. The sonatinas are clearly intended for less advanced pupils; today they are Clementi’s most well-known works as countless young pianists are still given them for instruction. Therefore this set should be of particular interest to many of those pupils and their teachers.

Auser Musici’s recordings for Hyperion have been praised for their stylish period-instrument charm and lithe, flexible, elegant sound. They have rediscovered many hidden gems of the Italian baroque repertoire. Works featuring the fl ute are something of a specialty of the ensemble and their disc of Boccherini Flute Quintets was highly acclaimed. The baroque fl ute virtuoso Carlo Ipata returns for this latest release. Previously concentrating on music of Tuscan origin, Auser Musici now turns to 18th century Naples. The city at this period was an extraordinarily fecund artistic crucible, with many commissioning opportunities for young composers. The composers recorded here are contemporaries of the great composers such as Porpora who were at the forefront of the achievements of Neapolitan music in the fi rst half of the eighteenth century; and the startling quality of the music demonstrates the richness of the artistic life of the age.

The Brabant Ensemble and Stephen Rice bring another forgotten Renaissance master to light. Little is known about the life of the composer Pierre Moulu — he joins the long list of Renaissance musicians whose lives are almost entirely masked in shadow. Fortunately, his works have attracted the attention of music historians since the earliest days of the discipline in the late nineteenth century. Like much sixteenth-century polyphony, however, his works have rarely been performed in modern times, and this is the fi rst recording devoted to his music. Moulu’s most celebrated work is the Missa Alma redemptoris mater, an extraordinary piece that can be sung with or without rests, as the polyphony is composed so as to fi t together in two combinations. The short version is recorded here along with two movements from the alternative long version. Stephen Rice’s fascinating and scholarly program notes fully explain the techniques involved.

In Paris, between 1850 and 1860, two of the greatest composers of the time, César Franck and Charles Gounod, both wrote works to the text of the Seven last words of Christ on the cross. Two opposing temperaments, two violently contrasted works; yet the same vibrant faith shines out of both these two masterpieces. This disc features the world premiere recording of a new transcription for organ and chamber choir by noted César Franck specialist, Joris Lejeune. Lejeune’s ‘distilled’ version, in its use of concertante harp and cello solos, conforms to the forces used by Franck in his motets and offertories.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThis disc of music for cello and piano by Shostakovich juxtaposes two disparate styles. The tumultuous and virtuoso sonata of Opus 40, still infl uenced by Tchaikovsky and Miaskovsky, is emblematic of his youth. The second, a transcription of his very last score, the Opus 147 Sonata for viola, is a Winterreise-like journey through the composer’s memories, ending with an homage to Beethoven. This crepuscular work blends in direct musical quotations with parodical, sometimes even derisory, associations. Here, for the fi rst time, it is played on the cello in its original tessitura.

There is a touch of the exotic in the music of Korean composer Isang Yun, rooted as it is in a fusion between Asian and European musical cultures. Although Yun is best known as a composer of orchestral works and operas, almost fi fty chamber music works occupy a central position in his oeuvre. In addition to traditional genres such as the string quartet, he experimented with unusual combinations. His affi nity for the accordion, whose capability for sound modulation strongly attracted the composer, is the focus of this disc, which feature the prodigious talents of accordionist Stefan Hussong.

On Mayte Martín’s stellar new recording alCANTARaMANUEL, the Barcelona-born singer-composer delves into the poetry of Manuel Alcántara (born 1928, in Málaga, Andalusia). “The idea sprung out of my complete affinity with the lyricism and intimate character of his poems,” she confi des, “I chose the ones which touched me the most, allowing each to inhabit the soundscape I felt was natural and appropriate.” Even as Martín’s sensitive musical accompaniments move Alcántara’s imagery into another dimension, her dulce de leche alto, a sinuous instrument that can scorch as well as caress, wrings hidden meanings and searing emotional insights from the texts. Experienced through Martín’s impassioned yet sensitive score and vocals, these are songs of love and remembrance, of fatalistic hope and ecstatic agony, totally Spanish in essence but universal in spirit.

File In: World / Africa / GabonVerité d’Afrique is the nineteenth album of Pierre Akendengué’s long and distinguished career. Released in Europe in 2008, the album was partly recorded in a shanty town in Libreville, Gabon and the remaining tracks were fi nished up in Paris, in the Lusafrica studios. While continuing to mine a traditional African vein, Akendengué also branches out in new musical directions, working with Cape Verdean producer Nado Andrade (best known for his role as pianist and musical director to Cesaria Evora), and even delving into reggae. However to please his fans, Akendengué also slips in an old favorite, “Considérable,” amongst his new material. Originally written in 1972, the song’s lyrics about pan-African unity remain as topical as ever.

The album brings together decades of Nubian urban song, giving an unprecedented overview of the neglected musical achievements of this unsung people. File In: World / Africa / CongoOn his latest album, Nkolo, Congolese singer Lokua Kanza draws on sounds from his father’s village and his native Lingala tongue to give the African Diaspora a musical sense of place. Listening to the album is an unabashedly uplifting experience — the theme of love is ever-present. The title track “Nkolo” translates as “God” and the album is unashamedly spiritual. A devout Christian, Kanza cut his musical teeth aged eight singing in the church in Kinshasha. Kanza, who now lives mainly in Brazil, was known as “the Brazilian” from an early age. The album’s tunes are a mixture of ndombolo [Congolese dance music] and samba, but Kanza also introduces instruments from outside these traditions, such as an ondes Martenot and a cristal Baschet (similar to a glass harmonica). Sung in Lingala, Portuguese and French, Nkolo is the embodiment of a perfect cross-cultural mix, a blend of beautiful melodies and radiant atmospheres. Its aesthetics simply defy categorization, touching at times on unseen spiritual forces.

Supported by just Ben Tucker’s bass and Dave Bailey’s drums, the guitarist seems inspired by the absence of any other chordal instrument. Unique in Green’s discography for its relaxed, lengthy performances and almost dream-like lyricism, Idle Moments could well be called Ballads for the Ages. Tokyo Blues, a quintessential mid-’60s Blue Note session, is Horace Silver’s tribute to the Japanese people. American jazz has always been wildly popular in Japan, and this album is Silver’s homage to the many fans that he has encountered on various triumphant tours of the island nation.

File In: JazzWith fi ve acclaimed albums under their belt, Les Pommes de ma Douche have built a superb career and a golden reputation in the world of Manouche jazz. The group was central to the worldwide revival of “gypsy swing.” On Five Men Swinging, Les Pommes de ma Douche take their inspiration from America. They’ve sought it out in every genre of American music, from Tin Pan Alley (“Lady is a Tramp,” “Night & Day”) to Hollywood (‘Mannix’), via Kansas City (“Taps Miller”). The resulting album of standards is a musical manifesto that might have be called ‘United Swing of America.’

File In: JazzClaude Tissendier offers a new reading of the legendary repertoire of Count Basie adapted for voice. This sort of vocal tribute was made immortal by stellar artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and more recently by Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, who appeared all over the world singing exceptional arrangements by Quincy Jones. Claude Tissendier is accompanied here by Michele Hendricks — Jon’s daughter — and Marc Thomas on a truly exceptional album of Basie standards.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile In: R & BAPO presents Sam Cooke’s most intimate, most soulful and ultimately most personal recording. Originally released in 1963, Night Beat has the feel of a private performance, captured after hours when the audience had gone home and the singer was singing purely for the love of his songs. The performance put forth is simply straight from Cooke’s soul. His selection of songs includes spiritual, bluesy ballads and gospel classics. Cooke owns these songs, making each interpretation all his own. Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound from the original three-track masters, APO’s SACD includes all three channels.
