10. Commercial Experience

From 1982 to 1985 I worked in the Cape Town office (Watson, Edwards, Van der Spuy and Laubscher) of a national consulting electrical and mechanical engineering firm (Watson Edwards Inc), subsequently acquired by WSP Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd. As project engineer I was fully responsible for the technical and internal and external, contractual financial success of the projects allocated to me (client liaison, specifications, tender adjudication, project administration). These were mostly related to the mechanical building services of high rise office accommodation or hospitals. My design function entailed hot, cold and chilled water or air, gas, compressed air, fuel and steam reticulation systems, i.e. matching of system components (e.g. chillers, condensers, cooling towers and pumps) to calculated load requirements for cold rooms, air conditioning and ventilation or heating plants etc., including the design of electric, electronic or pneumatic controls and switch boards. The approximate total value of the mechanical projects under my control at any one time was R5 Mill. (~R20 Mill. 2015). Despite good prospects in the firm I took up full time studies for an MSc degree 1985.
