Harold: They're all alike.

Maude: Oooh, but they're not. Look. See, some are smaller, some are fatter, some grow to the left, some to the right, some even have lost some petals. All kinds of

observable differences. You see, Harold, I feel that much of the world's sorrow comes from people who are “this”, yet allow themselves

be treated as “that”.

“yet allow themselves be treated as “that”.

“With baby boomers on college campuses nationwide getting ready to retire, those next in line — professors,

administrators, and staff members in the middle of their careers — feel somewhat dispirited. “

They are more likely than anyone else on their campuses to harbor negative feelings about their jobs,

career advancement, and the fairness of the workplace, according to an extensive survey

conducted by The Chronicle.

findings come from more than 15,000 survey respondents at 89 colleges across the country. The Chronicle survey was completed in March and April 2008 by 5,840 faculty members, 4,003 administrators, and 4,262 professional staff members.

The most-satisfied group of campus employees by age was

composed of those 65 and older.

"Just like in corporate America, colleges need to focus on

midcareer training so people don't get lost in the shuffle."

40% of workers feel disconnected from their employers.

2 out of every 3 workers do not identify with or feel motivated to drive their

employer's business goals and objectives.

25% of employees are just “showing up to collect a paycheck.”

Lot’s of Reasons• Conflict between co-workers• Conflict with your supervisor• Not being appropriately paid for what you do• Not having the necessary equipment or

resources to succeed• Lack of opportunities for promotion• Having little or no say in decisions

that affect you

attachment

my job = money = happiness

Page 50: Harold Maude
Page 51: Harold Maude

Well, if some people get upset because they feel they have a hold on some things, I'm merely acting as a gentle reminder: here today,

gone tomorrow, so don't get attached to things.

Vice, Virtue. It's best not to be too moral. You cheat yourself

out of too much life.

Aim above morality. If you apply that to life, then

you're bound to live life fully.

Support work-life balance.

“Employees in the survey who rated their institution's work-life policies highly also said they would recommend a job at the college to their family and friends.

Younger employees, in particular, expect to have work-life balance and expect their employees to support them”

Employees who said they had a strong sense of loyalty to their institution also agreed that their institution's culture is "something you don't find

just anywhere."
