Nineteen Sixty Eight was a big year.Mexico City was the high altitude host of the

Olympics where David Hemery famously won the 400 metres hurdles in a new world record time. There was racial tension and riots in the US as well as student protests against the Vietnam war.

Planet of the Apes and 2001: A Space Odyssey were released at the cinema.

West Bromich Albion won the FA Cup and Manchester United becamethefirstEnglishfootballteam to win the European Cup.

London Bridge was sold for $2.5million dollars to US entrepreneur Robert McCulloch

Martin Luther-King and US Senator Robert Kennedy were both tragically assassinated.

Boeing introduced the largest airliner in the world up to that time, the Boeing 747 ‘Jumbo Jet.’

The Beatles released the White Album. The Rolling Stones released the Beggars Banquet album.

ItwastheyearmanfirstlefttheconfinesoftheEarth’sgravity.Apollo8flewtotheMoonanddidten orbits, paving the way for Apollo 11 to actually land on it in 1969.

So why else will 1968 be remembered? Well...A volunteer organisation called The Harrietsham Fish Scheme was founded. 2018 sees it’s 50th annniversary!

From the Editor

So after that trip down memory lane, you’ll see in this issue that there’s plenty going on in the area through the summer. There’s concerts, plays, festivals, competitions as well as all the regular activities put on by local organisations, so please try to give them your support. Enjoy the issue.Anthony Wiffen - and a thank you to Wikipedia!!

Harrietsham Network

This year we will be celebrating the Fiftieth Anniversary of the setting up of the FISH SCHEME. This was set up in 1968 as a helping hands organization by a group

ofvolunteersandinJanuary1970thefirstedition of the Network magazine was printed.

At that time the committee chairman was the Revd. R Maxwell, the secretary Mrs. J Brasington, and there were six other members of the committee. The Editorial team comprised Revd. Maxwell, D Baldwin, T. Hodges, I Mackenzie and Mrs Baldwin.

Ifyouwouldliketohavealookatthefirsteditionandperhapscompareitwith the current magazine, a copy can be viewed on the Archive page on ourwebsite,harrietshamfishscheme.org.

Over the past 50 years the Scheme has continued to operate successfully, totallyreliantonwillingvolunteerswhohavecontinuedtofulfilltheaimsand objectives of the Scheme. Unfortunately our present committee has recently lost a few members, for one reason or another and would appreciate offers of help from anyone in the Village who has a little time to spareforotherresidents.Ifyouareinterestedinfindingouthowyoucanhelp please contact either Marjorie Darby on 850657 or myself on 851075.

About two years ago the PCC of St John’s Church decided to pay for a garden bin to be placed in the churchyard so that any garden rubbish could be collected by the council. Over this time the bin has beenusedbypeopleputtingflowerson the graves and in the church. However it has also been ‘misused’ by others who think it can also hold generalrubbish.Apartfromflowerwrappings, this has included bottles, tins, general paper rubbish and

other litter which has to be emptied out on a regular basis if we are not to run the risk of the council workers refusing to take the bin. So this is a plea that this rubbish is put in the bins which are in the Glebefieldoppositethechurchandto keep the one in the churchyard for its original purpose.Thank you

What a fantastic turnout of 26 residents for the Parish Council organised Litter Pick on Saturday April 7th.At 9am villagers met on the West Street Green, the weather was rainy and a vote was taken to still go ahead. Within a very

short time the sun was out and the village was awash with hi-vis clad, bag and picker carrying adults and youngsters.

Thanks go to all those who got involved, it was wonderful to see so many people taking part and caring for their community.Special thanks go to all the Harrietsham & Lenham Scouts that came out in force to support the event. Support was given from Maidstone Borough who supplied equipment of gloves, bags and pickers and also for collecting the litter following the eventAnyone wanting to know more about litter picks and other community events or to volunteer can contact Tom Sams on 01622 859412 Warmest regardsTom & Janetta Sams

May 2017

During the last four years we have been marking the centenary of all those from Harrietsham who died in the First World War by placing a cross, on the anniversary of their death, in our Garden of Remembrance, on the green in West Street. However, 20th May will see the centenary of two soldiers from the First World War who died very near to the village. On the night of 19th/20th May 1918 the newly formed Royal Air Force engaged a German Gotha G IV three manned plane over Kent. It was shot down and crashed

somewhere between Frinsted and Harrietsham resulting in the deaths of the pilot Albrecht Sachtler and the observer Joachim Flathow. The gunner Hermann Tasche survived and was taken prisoner. As we rightly remember each of those men and women from our village who died in the First World War, perhaps we can also spare a thought for those from another country who also lost their lives very near to where we all live now. After all they were someone’s husband, father or son too. Mike Bishop

The grass court season starts on Sunday May 6th from 2pm (families very welcome to come along from 4pm to try out tennis any Sunday).

Our evening sessions are on Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 6:30pm. Weather and playing conditions are updated via our Web Site Twitter account. Professional Coaching sessions will continue to run on Sunday mornings from 10am to 1pm for children and adults – details on the Web Site. For further details or any general enquiries please contact Andrew Rogers on 859352 or visit our website : harrietshamtennis.co.uk

The Wives group had another good turnout for our monthly meeting where we welcomed Maurice Dalton

to talk to us about Ellen Terry and Smallhythe Place.

Maurice began his talk by posing a statement about Ellen Terry’s status as one of our greatest Victorian actresses. He told us about her upbringing in a theatrical family and went on to detail her more famous roles which began very early (before she had reached her teens). However he also gave us an insight into her personal life which was very ‘racy’ and not at all Victorian. The latter included two husbands (one a lot older and one younger), neither of whom lasted very long, and a number of liaisons with other men. Ellen’s life ended in Smallhythe Place which she had bought when her acting career was beginning to fade and Maurice told us about all the mementos which the house holds in safe keeping and which can be seen by its many visitors.

The evening ended with a majority of our members voting to send

the money which had been raised at our auction in February to SchoolGambia. Our March speaker, Karen di Marco had given us an extremely interesting talk about the work that she and her husband had begun 17 years ago out in this country which was still being carried on today. This included building a school which now has 10 classrooms with over 500 pupils between the ages of 3 ½ and 16 years old. Most of the pupils pass their external exams which enables them to go on to paid employment.

One of the more recent projects has been the installation of a solar water pump which means that the villagers no longer have to spend much of their time pumping water from wells. A truly worthwhile success story!

Our next meeting in May will be a talk entitled ‘3Women, 1Man’ – an intriguing title! We would welcome any newcomers to the village to our group

It hardly seems possible that we have now completed our sixth year as a society following our AGM on the 16th

April, obviously I am writing this article in advance of the meeting so will do a brief report next month. You will also be able to findinformationonourprogrammefor 2018/19 on our website – harrietshamhistorysociety.org.

Thefirstmeetingofournewyearis on Monday 21st May when our speaker James Dickinson’s talk will be ‘Edward II and the She Devil’. We had a very enjoyable meeting in March with a return visit by Andrew Clarke whose talk on old Maidstone transport through the ages was accompanied by him showing a large collection of photos and postcards of all of the modes of transport in our County Town. It was interesting to see

the early trams, trolley buses and other types of transport running through the centre of town. Our next fund raising event for the War Memorial Paving Project is a BINGO NIGHT on Friday 8th June at 7.30pm in the village hall which I hope you will all support as the last one we organised was a really fun evening. Membership ofoursocietyisstillonly£15.00ayear so why not join us and enjoy someofourtalksandfindoutmore about the vast history of our village. Information on our society and our projects can be found on our website. Peter Brown

The 100th Anniversary celebration of the Harrietsham Women’s Institute was a great success. Visitors enjoyed the displays of our activities over the decades and sampled lots of tasty food representing those times. Sale items of WI produce were popular and there was a raffle with great prizes. The speaker Mr. Ian Porter gave an excellant talk on the role of women during these years

especially towards the end of the first and through out the second world wars.A big thank you must go to our hard working President Angela and to all the committee and members who made this such a successful and memorable day.On Thursday May 10th we will hold our Annual meeting and Resolutions.

What an exciting month May is going to be. It’s almost here! Our “Open House” is on May 8th. Everyone is invited to be our guests at this special event. We will all be working on fun things and getting excited to meet lots of new faces. I do

hope yours will be one of them.

We have packaged up some special little projects that you can make while you are with us and then take home. We will sit with you and show you step by step what to do so that you can go home with a new skill. All for free.

We are baking a cake and putting the kettle on, so come along and sip tea with us and visit a while. We’d love to show you what we do. If you enjoy sewing or would like to learn something new, you owe it to yourself to come check us out. We will be in the Osbourne room, Lenham Community Centre on May 8th from 12:30 until 4:30. May 2017

A night alone in a hotel – surely the perfect time to search one’s soul and write a Christian message? I

sat and prayed and asked God to show me what to write – nothing, or so it seemed. I checked my text messages and emails as far as I could on my mobile phone – nothing much going on there. I popped to the dining room for supper where an elderly man befriended me and told me all about his life – no, nothing to write about there.

I returned to my room, switched on the television and watched the news (and an Inspector Linley mystery) – nothing. I decided to turn to those fountains of all knowledge - Facebook and Google – still nothing. “Ah well, since there is nothing to write about, I may as well turn in and read my Bible instead”, I mused. “Shame though, it would have been a useful job done whilst alone for the evening.”With a full tummy and having enjoyed a lovely bath, I climbed into bed. And there it was, staring me in the face. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4)

If we want to understand God and know him, let alone write about him, we need to study his word. Observing life and people from our own point of view can only teach us so much. Google is great for

homework and Facebook is good for seeing how our friends are, but they can’t beat Biblical study.

Wonderful religious experiences are very special but, fortunately for those of us who are more familiar with the M25 than the road to Damascus, what sustains us day in and day out is the word of God where we can learn and enjoy so much:

Tales of battles against the odds and adventures at sea (complete with whales!); Amazing stories about the most unlikely people with attitude problemsorphysicaldifficulties, doing wonderful things with God’s help; Jesus teaching his disciples and the crowds who gathered and followed him, simple rules for life through picture stories or parables.

We can learn that whatever we’ve done in the past, and can guide us to an exciting and new freedom in the future. So it may be a bit late for New Year’s resolutions or Lenten promises but, if you don’t already dip into your Bible regularly, then why not start today? You could also join a homegroup and enjoy discussion, friendship and tea, while unravelling the mysteries and meanings of harder passages.

Details of homegroups can be found in our parish magazines. But a word of warning: be prepared to be amazed and changed for life!

We held our Spring Show in March with 29 members in attendance. In view of the snow ice and rain

we were not expecting there to be a large entry but surprise surprise the members came up trumps with a very colourful display. Entries were a little down as could be expected but nevertheless 18 members exhibited with a total of 70 separate entries.

While judging was taking place members were entertained with a very well produced video about Biddulph Grange Gardens in Staffordshire. The garden was created by James Bateman in the firstpartoftheEighteenthcentury.Bateman became known as a great gardener and plantsman in his day.ThegardenhasamagnificentPinetum as well as Dahlia Walk and Stumpery. Plants were obtained from the Himalayas, Far East and China. Parts are also given over to Egyptian and Chinese themes. Bateman was also an avid collector of orchids and produced the largest ever book, in size, dedicated to them, only 125 volumes were printed and were well sought after. In the latter part of the eighteenth century the gardens fell into disrepair but in recent times the gardens have been extensively repaired and brought back to life courtesy of the National Trust who now own the property. Looks like a good place to visit.

After judging was over members were able to view the results and

found that nearly all exhibitors had been awarded a prize. The overall winner with most points in show was Ken Leach who also collected the trophy for Best Exhibit in show for his trumpet daffodils.

We are in the process of producing the schedule for the annual show on Sept 8th. These will be available shortlyfromthePostOffice,Surgeryand Village Hall. Wonder Based on the New York Times bestseller, WONDER tells the incredibly inspiring and heart-warming story of August Pullman. Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to discover their compassion and acceptance, Auggie's extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can't blend in when you were born to stand out.

May 2017

With spring well under way and the outdoor bowling season having only just started, if you

have been watching the bowls in the Commonwealth Games and perhaps toying with the idea of having a go yourself, now would be a good time to do something about it.

We are a lively and successful local club (just over the parish boundary on the road into Lenham) and we are on the lookout for new members.

If you have recently moved into the district you may be looking round for something healthy and enjoyable that all the family can do together. Bowls may not be the thing that immediately springs to mind, but give it a chance. Youngsters seem to love playing bowls and when they get to secondary school age they start tofindtheycancompetewith(andsometimes, satisfyingly, beat) their parents. And parents can take part in an outdoor activity knowing their children are safe and close at hand. Several grandparents have also told us it’s an excellent way to bridge the age gap.

Once someone has been playing for a short while they almost always say that they wish they had taken it up earlier. In that respect, some of our junior members have been very

successful and have even played for Kent at youth level.

You don’t have to know anything about the game – our club coach, likes nothing better than showing new bowlers the ropes. Last season’s short course for ‘complete beginners’ was very well received and he is set to run it again. We even have bowls you may borrow until you are ready to get your own.

In addition to our excellent green youwillfindwehaveagreatclubhouse with good facilities, including a well-stocked bar! Take a peek at the pictures on our Web site: www.lenhambowlingclub.org.uk.

If you decide it’s just what you’re looking for – friendly people, pleasant surroundings, useful exercise (although not too demanding) and a bit of social life – come along to the Club’s Open Day on Saturday 5th May (from 10am to 2pm) and have a go. We’re on Maidstone Road, just past Swadelands Close. Don’t stand on ceremony, just turn up wearingflatshoes(under18smustbe accompanied by a responsible adult). You will be made to feel most welcome. If you can’t make it, please give me a call on 01622 859642 and we can still sort something out for you.

The past year has seen the magazine grow in distribution levels due to the development within the village. Expectations for 2018 will see further growth with new properties already in development and a new development Belway Homes scheduled. We increased the cost of advertising in 2017 and revenue improved but still not enough to cover the cost of printing charges, we may have to include a further page of adverts to offset this.Although prices increased our customers have remained consistentBarrett Homes are completed and Crest Nicholson homes are moving quite quickly with their site, initial contact has been made with Crest Nicholson Kath
